Under fire for tweet on Jain monk, Vishal Dadlani severs ties with AAP

August 28, 2016

New Delhi, Aug 28: AAP supporter and music composer Vishal Dadlani came under sharp criticism from several quarters including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for his sarcastic tweet on Jain monk Tarun Sagar's address to the Haryana Assembly, following which he announced quitting "all active political work/affiliation".vishal-dadlani-759

Kejriwal disapproved Dadlani's remark saying that "Tarun Sagarji Maharaj is a very revered saint, not just for Jains but everyone and those showing disrespect is unfortunate and should stop", while Delhi PWD Minister Satyendar Jain sought "kshama" from him on behalf of his music composer "friend".

Dadlani, however, maintained that he was against the use of religion in governance.

The Haryana government had invited the Jain monk, who appeared in nude, to deliver a lecture 'Kadve Vachan' in the Assembly on Friday. After a barrage of criticism, Dadlani tendered an apology for his tweet and also deleted it.

"It feels bad that I hurt my Jain friends & my friends @ArvindKejriwal & @SatyendarJain. I hereby quit all active political work/affiliation. I apologise again, to the Jain Community, & all others offended. But I beg you all not to support religion in governance, for India's sake," Dadlani tweeted.

"I made a mistake by offending the peaceful Jain community, and I felt the only way to truly apologise, was to renounce my ego. I made a mistake, & I'm genuinely sorry. That's all," he said.

The music composer said no one, not even Kejriwal, has asked him to quit the party.

"A lot is being said against AAP because I chose to quit. Neither Arvind, nor anyone else, asked me to quit. I make my own decisions. I just want to say, AAP is a family. Please keep faith in AK (Kejriwal) & the party! Never forget how hard AK & AAP have fought for all of us.

"AAP volunteers, stay strong & fight twice as hard. With you all, in spirit," Dadlani said in a series of tweets.

"I met Shri Tarun Sagar ji Maharaj last year. Our family regularly listens to his discourses on TV. We deeply respect him and his thoughts Tarun Sagar ji Maharaj is a very revered saint, not just for Jains but everyone. Those showing disrespect is unfortunate and should stop (sic)," Kejriwal tweeted.

"I apologise for hurting feelings of Jain community by my friend @VishalDadlani. I seek kshama from Muni Shri Tarun Sagar ji Maharaj (sic)," Jain tweeted.

Dadlani is a staunch supporter of Kejriwal in the film industry and had campaigned for the party in Delhi Assembly polls and the 2014 Lok Sabha election.

He had composed the 'Paanch Saal Kejriwal' song, which became popular during the 2015 Delhi Assembly polls.

New Delhi, Jun 24: Actor Bhumi Pednekar supported migrant labourers traveling long distances amid the coronavirus pandemic, in a rather unique way- by donating footwear to them.

The gut-wrenching images of migrants walking barefoot on the roads made the 'Pati Patni Aur Woh' actor take the plunge to help them.

Pednekar joined hands with a footwear company and a volunteer-based non-government organisation - The Robin Hood Army - to help the underprivileged with footwear.

The actor helped over 1000 migrant labourers in and around Ghaziabad in Murad Nagar, Govindpuram, Vijay Nagar, and distributed footwear among men and women across age-groups.

Jaipur, Jan 24: Actor Sonali Bendre has said that she came into the movies to make money but fell in love with the profession where she discovered herself and found her family and friends. The 45-year-old actor said she owed a lot to Bollywood which is the most wonderful place to be, both mentally as well as creatively.

"I came into movies to make money and I fell in love with the profession. It was the most wonderful place to be, mentally and creatively," she said.

"I found myself there, found my friends and family over there. I owe a lot to Bollywood. It was one of the most wonderful things that happened to me," Sonali said here on Thursday.

The actor said her entry into movies by purely because she happened to be at the right place and at the right time.

Sonali added when acting offers came her way she knew that in no other field could she have made as much money, and as quickly, as she did in movies.

"Basically, I got into this because it was great money," she said.

The actor was speaking at the Jaipur Literature Festival and also talked about books and how her book club named ‘Sonali's Book Club' came into being.

Sonali, who has been convalescing after undergoing treatment for cancer in the US, said that books gave her strength and kept her afloat while she was going through one of the toughest phases of her life.

The actor was diagnosed with high grade cancer in July 2018 and underwent treatment for it in New York.

"Books were my friends other than my sisters while I was growing up. I'm nowhere remotely connected to movies. I have a very middle class Maharashtrian upbringing. When I got into movies, it was like being on another planet. Again in this world where it was easy to feel the peer pressure and do certain things or not do certain things, or look a certain way, books kept me grounded," she said.

"'A Gentleman in Moscow' (a 2016 novel by Amor Towles) was uplifting and I got so much strength from that book during my treatment in New York," Sonali said.

The actor, who often shares posts about books and authors on social media, said one should stop feeling guilty about not completing a book.

"Sometimes you start judging yourself by not completing a book, but I have reached a stage where I understand that I'm a book-lover, but that doesn't mean I will like all the books. It's okay if you don't like a book," she said.

Sonali also said that nobody wanted to know about the intellectual capacity of Bollywood stars as it was not "entertainment enough or gossipy enough".

Earlier before her session, Sonali launched author Ashwin Sanghi's latest book ‘The Vault of Vishnu', the sixth book in the Bharat series, at the 13th edition of the festival.
