Underprivileged students hit as Tejasvi Surya sets up his office in library building

Bengaluru, Sept 20: In the vast Bengaluru South Lok Sabha constituency, parliamentarian Tejasvi Surya, unfortunately, couldn’t find any other place to set up his office and hence he had to occupy a public library located in Jayanagar 5th Block. It was a place where students from underprivileged families gathered to prepare for board examinations.

The building in question belongs to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). While the first and second floor is meant for newspaper reading and public reference, the ground floor was utilised to conduct evening classes to coach children from underprivileged families for SSLC board exams. That practice will end as and when the MP moves in.

The BBMP commissioner already issued an order allotting the space for office use of Surya and even the renovation work is underway.

As per details available, the initiative was started by former MLA late N Vijay Kumar in association with a private trust for a period of five years.

“The agreement signed by Vijay Kumar was completed in March 2019 and another trust applied to continue the same project for which the BBMP council even extended permission,” said a BBMP source.

The coaching used to be conducted a few months before the final exams and also during the exams. “This year, students would be deprived of that facility,” said an official from the library.

Justifying his move, Tejasvi Surya said that the space was also used as an office by late Vijay Kumar. “The library is located on the first and second floor of the building. We are making an office in an unused place. Whatever that has been said is false news,” said the MP.

The copy of the order issued by the BBMP states: “Keeping the interest of office activities of MP representing Bengaluru South parliamentary constituency Tejasvi Surya, the ground floor of the property belonging to BBMP at ward number 168 located at No:4, 11th main road, 39th cross road, Jayanagar 5th block in Pattabhirama Nagara, opposite to Pu.Thi.Na park is reserved for office activities of Bangalore South MP.”

Speaking on the issue, RTI activist Mari Lingegowda Mali Patil, who has decided to write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the issue, said student welfare activity was going on at the library and even government schoolchildren had access to special coaching during the SSLC exams.

“But despite knowing about the activity MP Tejaswi Surya has snatched away the space. I will write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about this incident,” he said.

New Delhi, Mar 3: Bharatiya Janata Party leader Kapil Mishra, who instigated violence in northeast Delhi by provoking mobs, has now been provided with 24x7 security. After he claimed threat to his life, he has been provided with “Y” category security — which entitles him to six security personnel round-the-clock to guard him in and outside the city.

He had fought the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections by giving inflammatory remarks around the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act in Shaheen Bagh, and lost to Aam Aadmi Party candidate. But he continued to issue provocative remarks.

While there is clear evidence of his scandalous statements just a day before the violence was unleashed on Muslims in Delhi last week where around 50 people were killed, no action has been taken against him so far. Instead, he is being treated as a hero in his party.

As per sources, Mishra complained that he got life threats over the past week in wake of the violence and based on his request, the Delhi Police has provided the security cover.

Mishra had taken to social media platform Twitter and alleged that he was receiving threats via WhatsApp, Twitter and Facebook, from Indian and foreign accounts.

“I am constantly being threatened with murder on the phone, on WhatsApp, on email. Hundreds of threats are being given continuously from the country and abroad. I don’t fear this hate campaign against me,” he had said on Twitter on March 1.

Mishra had on February 23 made an incendiary speech, following which North-East Delhi witnessed anti-Muslim violence.

The Supreme Court of India on Monday said it will on Wednesday (March 4) hear a plea that sought immediate FIRs against Kapil Mishra, Union Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur and other leaders for their recent hate speech, which allegedly triggered the violence in Delhi. The plea was filed by Delhi violence survivors.

The apex court bench, comprising Chief Justice SA Bobde, listed the matter for hearing after senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, who is appearing on behalf of the survivors told the SC that the Delhi High Court had last week adjourned the matter for six weeks even as “people are dying every day”.

Mangaluru, June 23: G Jagadeesha, deputy commissioner of Udupi, who is heading the magisterial inquiry into the December 19 police firing case in Mangaluru, has sought more time from the government to submit the report.

Two innocent passersby - Nauseen Kudroli (49) and Abdul Jaleel Bengre (23) - were killed when policemen opened fire randomly after caning the alleged anti-CAA protesters in Mangaluru.

The chief minister B S Yediyurappa led Karnataka state government had commissioned two inquires, one magisterial and the other CID, into the incident.

“Due to the covid-19 pandemic the probe couldn’t be complete on time. I have asked the government for more time. Two more hearings are to be conducted,” said Mr Jagadeesha, who was expected to submit the report before the government on Tuesday.
