Kochi, Oct 17: Dashing all the hopes, Vatican has rejected the appeal of Sister Lucy Kalapura, a nun who belonged to the Franciscan Clarist Congregation (FCC), against the decree expelling her from the congregation.
A letter sent by Archbishop Giambattista Diquattro, apostolic nuncio, to Sr Ann Joseph, superior general, FCC, Aluva, mentioned that the Congregation for Oriental Churches had rejected Lucy’s appeal. Sr Lucy, who led the protest against rape-accused Bishop Franco Mulakkal, was expelled from the FCC in August for not giving a satisfactory explanation to the notices served to her for leading a lifestyle that was in violation of the FCC law.
“Sr Lucy can present recourse to the supreme tribunal,” the letter stated. Sr Lucy has decided to appeal. Sr Lucy had been expelled from the congregation on grounds of following a lifestyle that was not on the lines of the congregation. She failed to follow the three vows of obedience, chastity and poverty. She was asked to leave the convent immediately.
She was accused of publishing a book of poems, buying a car, a low-end Alto with her money earned as a teacher, and taking part in activities that degraded the reputation of the Church.
The action against her for standing against a rape accused Bishop has sent shock waves among a large section of the faithful who have said that they would lend all support to fight the ouster.
