New Delhi, Aug 3: Investigation into the Malayalam actress abduction and assault case has brought to the fore murky details about popular actor Dileep.

His involvement in the case has shocked all. Now, the latest bit of news to emerge is that his former wife Manju Warrier, to whom he was married for 17 years, was not his first wife.

Before his marriage to Manju in 1998, Dileep was married to a distant relative, the investigation has revealed. According to a report in Malayalam Manorama, a distant relative of the actor was his first wife and the wedding was official recorded at the registrar office in Desam, Aluva, Dileep’s hometown.

Dileep, aka Gopalakrishnan, married this woman, much before he made his film debut in the 1990s, say reports. He later got close to Manju and as soon as relatives of the actor got to know of his affair, they sounded the first wife. The couple then parted ways. However, the police suspect Dileep didn’t officially separate from this woman. She moved to the Gulf later.

The police is trying to contact her and other people who signed as witnesses when the two got married.

Dileep divorced Manju, with whom he has a daughter in 2015, and married another popular actor Kavya Madhavan in 2016.

Meanwhile, Kerala Police on Wednesday called Madhu Warrier, the brother of Manju Warrier, to the Aluva Police club as part of its probe.

According to those in the know of things, the police team questioned Madhu as part of their efforts to find out from those who were once close to Dileep through his marriage to Warrier about the actor’s character.

Dileep’s brother-in-law (sister’s husband) was also called by the police on Wednesday, as he used to manage all the business interests of the actor.

In the past one week, among those in the film industry who the police took statements from included Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) general secretary Edavela Babu, actor Siddique, singer Rimy Tomy and actress Shritha.

Earlier, the police took statements from actor-turned-CPI-M backed legislator Mukesh and also actor-turned-director and close aide of Dileep, Nadir Shah.

The police also took statements from his wife Kavya Madhavan and her mother.

Dileep’s manager Appunni, whose anticipatory bail plea was rejected by the high court, appeared before the probe team on Monday. He was let off after five hours of questioning.

Dileep’s bail plea was rejected by the Kerala high court on July 24. Ever since his arrest, he has been cooling his heels at a jail in Kerala.

According to speculation, there could be more arrests in the coming days. The popular young actress was abducted and molested while travelling from Thrissur to Kochi on February 17 this year.

The police arrested her abductors in a week’s time. In June, the police cracked the conspiracy angle in the abduction and arrested Dileep on July 10.

Mumbai, Jan 7: Actor Anil Kapoor, who next will be seen onscreen in Malang, revealed that he always tells superstar Aamir Khan not to stop working with filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani.

Kapoor was interacting with the media at the trailer launch of Malang along with his co-actors Adtiya Roy Kapur, Disha Patani, Elli AvRam, film's director Mohit Suri and producers Luv Ranjan, Bhushan Kumar, Ankur Garg and Jay Shewakraman on Monday in Mumbai.

Anil Kapoor has worked with many directors and producers in his 40-year acting career.

Talking about camp culture in the Hindi film industry and praising makers of Malang, Kapoor said, "I feel we need producers like Ankur (Garg) and Luv (Ranjan). I have told Mohit (Suri) to continue doing films with them. I always tell Aamir Khan by calling him on the phone to say that you should not leave Raju Hirani (Rajkumar Hirani). Whenever I see films of both of them, I tell Aamir not to leave him."

He continued, "I feel whenever you make a good team then you should hold on to it. Team is very important and there are certain stars that come together to make something interesting and exciting."

Kapoor gave an example of Hollywood actors and filmmakers while backing his viewpoint.

"If you see Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio they do so many films together. They can work with others, too, but they keep working with each other. There is some magic, obviously. You have to go with the casting but somewhere I feel teams should stand by each other," the actor added.

Malang stars Aditya Roy Kapur, Disha Patani, Anil Kapoor and Kunal Khemu in lead roles. It is scheduled to release on February 7.

Los Angeles, Jul 1: Bollywood stars Alia Bhatt, Hrithik Roshan and costume designer Neeta Lulla are among the 819 artistes and executives who have received invitations to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).

Bhatt's last movie, the Zoya Akhtar-directed Gully Boy was India's official entry for best international feature category at the 2019 Oscars. However, the film had failed to make it to the final five.

Other prominent Indian names to receive invitations are casting director Nandini Shrikent, documentary filmmakers Nishtha Jain, Shirley Abraham, Amit Madheshiya, visual effects supervisors Vishal Anand and Sandeep Kamal.

In a statement, the Academy said the new invitees include 36 per cent of people of colour and 45 per cent women. Artistes from 68 countries have been invited as members.

Those who accept the invitation will have voting rights at the 93rd Academy Awards, scheduled to be held on April 25, 2021.

"The Academy is delighted to welcome these distinguished fellow travellers in the motion picture arts and sciences. We have always embraced extraordinary talent that reflects the rich variety of our global film community, and never more so than now," Academy President David Rubin said.

The Academy has been actively working to introduce more diversity in its voting to avoid a controversy like 2016 when the Oscars were dubbed "white" for failing to recognise talents of colour.

The 2020 batch boasts of major Hollywood names like Cynthia Erivo, John David Washington, Constance Wu, Zazie Beetz, Florence Pugh, Zendaya, Awkwafina, Yalitza Aparicio, Mackenzie Davis, Ana de Armas, Adele Haenel, Thomasin McKenzie, Olivia Wilde and others.

The stars of multiple Oscar-winning South Korean movie Parasite -- Jang Hye-Jin, Jo Yeo-Jeong, Park So-Dam and Lee Jung-Eun -- are among the invitees.

Directors Lulu Wang, Ari Aster, Terence Davies, Matthew Vaughn, Robert Eggers, Matt Reeves, Alma Har’el are on the list as well.

The Academy has announced a new five-year plan that includes implementing inclusion standards for nominees.

"We take great pride in the strides we have made in exceeding our initial inclusion goals set back in 2016, but acknowledge the road ahead is a long one.  We are committed to staying the course.

"We look forward to continuing to foster an Academy that reflects the world around us in our membership, our programs, our new Museum, and in our awards," Academy CEO Dawn Hudson said.

In 2019, the organisation had invited 842 new members which included Indian names such as filmmakers Zoya Akhtar, Anurag Kashyap and veteran actor Anupam Kher.
