We need strong coach to control Kohli's temperament : Bedi

May 23, 2015

New Delhi, May 23: Former India captain Bishan Singh Bedi feels that BCCI needs to appoint a "strong coach" to guide the temperamental Test captain Virat Kohli, who has courted a lot of off-field controversies in recent times.

Kohlis temperament"I believe Virat needs a good coach, who will be an able guide. That coach should be able to take charge of his temperament. He (Kohli) is so impulsive and it needs to change. Cricket is not kabaddi or kho-kho. If you want to play the game for a long time, you should be in control of your temperament," the legendary left-arm spinner told PTI during an interaction here on Thursday.

Bedi is not too happy with a section of media eulogising Kohli's "aggressive attitude".

"Media created this image of Kohli and media will destroy him also. He needs to be very careful. Every move of his will be monitored consistently. Whether he is holding the fork in the right or left-hand will also be scrutinised," said Bedi, who is known for expressing his frank views.

Asked whether there are strong personalities who can complement Kohli's aggression and in-your face attitude, Bedi did not give a direct reply.

"Look how Ravi Shastri and Sourav Ganguly look at Kohli, might be completely different from how Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid look at him. Look cricket is a sport that teaches you humility and a lot of good values," said Bedi.

Asked whether Kohli is a losing a bit of focus, Bedi replied, "I hope that's not the case."

While Bedi termed Harbhajan Singh's inclusion as a "backward step", he necessarily didn't agree with Sunil Gavaskar's opinion that "spin cupboard is bare".

"I don't think so (cupboard being bare) but if it is so, have we tried to identify why is it so? It is because of this IPL we are not getting quality young spinners. A youngster bowls a dot ball and a commentator on air say 'brilliant dot ball'. I mean brilliant dot ball! Come on, how can we describe a dot ball as brilliant."

"Selectors have picked this guy Karn Sharma in Test squad for bowling four overs of IPL. I mean he has played 35-40 first class matches (73 wickets in 38 first-class matches) but what exactly has he done?" asked Bedi.

"I see so many confused young players now because of IPL.

That Punjab opener (Manan) Vohra, Unmukt Chand, Sanju Samson all seem confused. Now there is this new guy Sarfaraz Khan. He is talented but he needs to do well in first-class cricket.

You can't simply undermine the value of first-class cricket and only have IPL as a benchmark," concluded Bedi.

Mumbai, Jan 13: India captain Virat Kohli indicated at dropping himself down the batting order to accommodate both Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul in the playing XI against Australia in the first ODI of the three-match series starting Tuesday.

With vice-captain Rohit Sharma an automatic pick, the team management is left with tough choice of selecting either Dhawan or Rahul in the XI. But the skipper sees no reason why both can't play together.

"Look, a guy in form is always good for the team. ...You obviously want to have the best players available and then chose from what the combination should be for the team. There might be a possibility that all three (Rohit, Shikhar and Rahul) might play. It will be interesting to see what balance we want to take in on the field," Kohli said on the eve of the match.

Asked if he would he be happy to bat lower down the order, Virat said,"Yeah, big possibility. I would be very happy to do so. Look I am not possessive about where I play. I am not insecure about where I bat," said the skipper.

For Kohli, it is more important as to what kind of leadership legacy he leaves behind rather than chase personal glory.

"Being the captain of the team, it is my job to make sure that the next lot is also ready. A lot of the other people might not look at it that way, but your job as a captain is not only to look after the team right now, but also to prepare a team that you leave behind when you eventually pass it onto someone else," he added.

Colombo, Aug 1: Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has expressed his interest in playing the inaugural edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL), scheduled to start from August 28.

Pathan is among 70 foreign players to have shown interest in playing the LPL, ESPNcricinfo reported.

It is believed that Pathan has taken permission from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to take part in the competition.

BCCI doesn't allow active players to participate in other T20 leagues but Pathan announced his retirement in January this year.

Former swashbuckling all-rounder Yuvraj Singh also played in a foreign league last year. He played for Maratha Arabians in the T10 League in Abu Dhabi.

According to ESPNcricinfo, Pathan will now be put in a player draft unless one of the five franchises choose him to be a marquee player. The details of the draft, and the franchise owners, are yet to be finalised and announced.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is also waiting on some government clearances even as it decides on franchise owners. The five franchises will represent Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Dambulla and Jaffna.

On Monday, SLC Executive Committee granted approval for the tournament.

"The 23 match League will be played on the four international venues of R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium, Rangiri Dambulu International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele International Cricket Stadium and Suriyawewa Mahinda Rajapakse International Cricket Stadium. Five teams named after the cities of Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Dambulla and Jaffna will participate in the League," SLC said in a statement on Monday.

Sri Lanka has controlled the spread of COVID-19 better than many other cricket-playing nations.
