West Bengal:?Two sons kept mother’s body in house for 9 months

September 12, 2016

Haringhata, Sep 12: Two men kept their mother’s body in their house at Simhat in Nadia district for almost nine months and the skeleton was recovered on Sunday, police said.

deadArun Saha (65) and Ajit Saha (55), both unmarried, told police that their mother Nani Bala Saha died on January 16 at the age of 85, and they could not take the body for cremation as it was very cold then.

“We thought of taking the body to the crematorium a few days later. But later, maggots formed in the body and it was not taken for cremation,” the elder brother said.

Locals said the brothers did not interact much with the neighbours. Enquired about the woman’s health, they would say she was ill and sleeping but no one was allowed to go inside their house.

A few days back, Rupak Adhikari, a local, went to the house for a survey on behalf of Haringhata Municipality. He had to measure the house and look into some documents but was not allowed inside.

Adhikari said he became suspicious and discussed this with other people and chalked out a plan.

“We formed a group of six people and sought to visit their mother this morning. When they did not allow us, a large number of people entered the house forcibly and found the skeleton on the bed. The room was shabby, dark and dirty,” he said, adding that the police were informed then.

The house is situated on large land and far from the main road. Apparently, that is reason why the stench from the body did not attract attention, locals said.

The brothers did not do anything for a living and led a frugal life. The younger brother was a private tutor some years ago, they said.

Police said the two brothers have been detained and are being interrogated. They seemed to have psychological problems.

In June last year, police had found a man living with the skeletons of his sister and two dogs in his house at posh Robinson Street in Kolkata.

Mar 12: Three women were arrested for allegedly administrating fake coronavirus vaccines to villagers in Maharashtra's Jalna district, police said on Thursday.

The police on Wednesday arrested Beed residents Radha Ramnath Saamse, Seema Krishna Andhale and Sangeeta Rajendra Avhad, who allegedly posed as doctors and healthcare workers, an official said.

The trio met villagers of Pipalgoan in Ambad tehsil, informed them about a vaccine that could protect them from coronavirus and administered it to gullible locals, he said.

Some villagers informed Dr Mahadev Munde, a medical officer at a rural health centre, about this, after which a complaint was lodged, the official said.

Fake vaccines and bottles, which were seized from the accused, have been sent to the state health department, he said, adding that a case of cheating has been registered against the trio.

The West Bengal government has suspended two women teachers in East Burdwan district on the charge of teaching pre-primary students from an English alphabet book consisting of a portion derogatory to the people with a dark complexion.

While presenting the alphabets with corresponding words and images, the book says U is for "Ugly". The illustration printed beside the letter is that of a boy with a dark complexion.

"The book is not part of the textbooks referred by the education department. It was introduced by the school itself. We have zero-tolerance for acts which instil prejudices into the minds of students," Education Minister Partha Chatterjee told reporters here on Thursday.

He said the two teachers of a local municipality-run school have been placed under suspension with immediate effect based on a preliminary investigation and stricter action would be taken against them later.

Though the school is now closed because of the lockdown, the matter came to light when the father of a student of the school was teaching him with the help of that book. He informed other parents and the education department was apprised of the issue, sources said.
