Bengaluru, Aug 9: A 28-year-old private firm employee in Whitefield alleged that she was cheated of Rs 7.5 lakh by an Instagram friend and another woman who promised her financial help and gifts.
Police registered a case of cheating against David and Anitha on the basis of a complaint filed by Akshata P, a resident of Immadihalli.
Akshata alleged in the complaint that she got to know a person who identified himself as David on Instagram and they exchanged WhatsApp numbers and began chatting. Akshata told David that a father of her friend was being treated for cancer but was facing financial problems. David promised to send her a huge sum in UK currency to help her friend.
“He informed me over WhatsApp that he’d couriered the money, a handbag and perfumes. Later, he said the goods were still with the customs in Delhi and asked me to send Rs 7.5 lakh to the bank account of one Anitha to release the consignment,” she alleged in the complaint.
Akshata later received a call from another woman, who identified herself as Anitha, and said Rs 7.5 lakh had to be paid to release the courier.
Police said Akshata transferred the money to a bank account number provided by David and tried to call him to enquire about the status of the parcel. But his phone was switched off.
