Will field a party worker, instead of Vijayendra from Varuna: BSY

Mysuru, Apr 23: BJP state president B S Yeddyurappa on Monday announced that his son B Y Vijayendra would not be contesting from Varuna assembly constituency in Mysuru against Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's son Yatindra.

Yeddyurappa's announcement at a meeting organised by the party at Nanjanagudu, near Mysuru, led to large-scale protests by BJP workers, following which police resorted to lathi-charge to bring the situation under control.

"Vijayendra is not filing nomination today, a common man (party worker) will be fielded and he will be filing the nomination," Yeddyurappa said.

"With folded hands, I request all of you to support and bless that candidate and make him win," he said.

The battle for Varuna assembly constituency in Mysuru was projected as a fight between the sons of former and current chief ministers.

The BJP has not so far officially announced any candidate for Varuna.

Vijayendra, Yeddyurappa's second son, was projected as the candidate, despite the party not announcing any candidate.

He has been campaigning in the constituency for over a fortnight now and even had rented a house there.

According to party sources, Vijayendra was to file his nomination from Varuna today.

As Yeddyurappa left the stage after making the announcement, angry workers got on to the dais and damaged furniture.

They even tried to stop Vijayendra and other party leaders' cars to know the reason why he was denied the ticket.

Police said they resorted to lathi-charge to bring the situation under control.

Siddaramaiah, who has chosen neighbouring Chamundeshwari and Badami in north Karnataka to contest the May 12 assembly election, has been representing Varuna after it became a constituency in 2008 following delimitation.

Yeddyurappa's elder son B Y Raghavendra is the sitting member of the assembly from Shikaripura in Shivamogga district.

Yeddyurappa is contesting the upcoming election from Shikaripura.

The Karnataka Assembly polls will be held on May 12 and the votes will be counted on May 15.

Bengaluru, May 5: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Tuesday said that the coronavirus situation in the state is "under control" as compared to several other states in the country.

He also hinted that soon the construction and industrial activities would be allowed in the state except in the red zones.

"Coronavirus situation in the state is under control as compared to other states. Due to this, travel of migrant workers was prohibited. Now, trade, construction and industrial activities need to restart, except in the red zones," he told reporters.

According to the Karnataka Health Department, the state has so far recorded 659 COVID-19 cases, including 324 discharged and 28 deaths.

Bengaluru, Jul 19: A viral video claiming to show crowded condition of a hospital treating COVID-19 patients in the city was found to be false with police on Sunday arresting a person for allegedly circulating it on social media.

Police said such videos have the potential to create panic and asked people to refrain from spreading them.

The arrest was made within hours of the police announcing registration of a case in connection with the video that showed a crowd of people wearing masks at an "outpatient ward" of a hospital, falsely identified as Victoria Hospital, a major dedicated COVID facility here.

The video went viral on social media.

"City Crime Branch swiftly identified and arrested this person who has been circulating false videos of panic in Victoria Hospital, Bangalore. Kudos to all doctors and medical professionals who are doing their best. False news busted," Bengaluru Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao tweeted.

Police said such videos have the potential to create panic in society and asked people to refrain from it.

"Covid False video about conditions of hospitals in Bangalore circulated on social media. Case registered in Cybercrime PS. While government, society at large fighting the pandemic, some are creating/forwarding messages/videos which has potential to create panic in society. Refrain from it," Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime, Sandeep Patil tweeted.

The video showed scores of people wearing masks gathered in a small space allegedly at an Out-Patient Department in a hospital, and a person filming it, claiming to be a doctor expressing concern that it was a threat to all medical staff, including the patients.

Official sources said the video was reportedly from a hospital in one of the northern states and not from Victoria Hospital.

Mangaluru, May 4: District Health Officer Dr Ramachandra Bairi on Monday said that a special team, comprising of six members, has been constituted to find the source of Corona infection in Dakshina Kannada .

The team is expected to file its report by May 6. It is still not clear if Bantwal was the source was the infection or not.

He said 1st phase of investigation in this regard is complete and the samples taken on the 12th day will give a clear picture.
