Raichur, Jan 28: A worker died after a huge pipe came crashing down on him from a crane at the Yermaras?Thermal Power Station (YTPS) site near Raichur on Tuesday. Hundreds of workers and local residents, enraged by the incident, went on a rampage and ransacked the office at the plant site.

The deceased has been identified as Mahesh (27), a native of Uttar Pradesh. The accident occurred at 12 noon when a crane was lowering a huge pipe at the work site. The chain, which was fastened to the pipe, got loosened and fell on Mahesh, injuring him seriously. Durgappa, the local contractor, shifted Mahesh to Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims), where he died.

The incident led to protests by workers at the site. They went on a rampage and ransacked the site office damaging furniture. They also assaulted the local contractor.

As the news spread, hundreds of local people wielding clubs and iron rods attempted to enter the under-construction YTPS unit. They threw stones at the houses of the workers after the police prevented them from entering the power plant. Tension prevailed for a while as the workers at the site too resorted to a protest. Superintendent of Police M?N Nagaraj clamped prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC.

Meanwhile, the workers at the site decided to quit their jobs and return to their native places. They vacated their houses and walked towards the exit of the work site along with their family members and household articles. However, the local residents assembled at the gate and staged a dharna. The SP, as a precautionary measure, extended the ban orders to a radius of five kilometres from the work site.

Additional Superintendent of Police, Papaiah, said the workers were shifted to safety by 15 buses. He said that they would be ferried to the nearest bus stand or railway station so that they can reach their native places.

Karnataka Power Corporation Limited Chief Engineer (Mechanical) Laksh told Deccan?Herald that the workers hailed from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal.

He said that the damage caused at the work site office has been estimated at Rs one crore. The Superintendent of Police said that cases had been booked in connection with the worker’s death and ransacking of the office.

On January 17, two labourers working on an underground pipe supplying water to the cooling tower of YTPS were buried alive after mud caved in on them.

New Delhi, Jul 17: The first FIR against Volkswagen and Audi in India for installing cheat devices in their cars to misrepresent emissions has been filed in Noida.

The FIR was filed by Noida resident Aniljit Singh against the top officials of Volkswagen and Audi in India and their headquarters in Germany. These include Rahil Ansari, Brand Director, Audi India, Balbir Singh Dhillon, Head, Audi India, and Bram Schot, Chairman, Audi AG.

The FIR reviewed by media agency cites forgery, cheating and criminal conspiracy under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.

The complaint has cited the global emissions scandal where VW was found to be installing a cheat device in its cars, in the absence of which, the cars produced 10-40 times emissions beyond the permissible limits.

The complainant said that in 2018 he had purchased seven Audi cars worth crores of rupees. At the time of taking the delivery, the complainant said that he inquired if the cheat devices were installed in India and he was told by the company that they were not, as in India's emission norms were not as stringent and the country being a growing market for Audi, no such device was implanted.

The complaint said that the authorities in India observed that Audi cars' emissions for nitrogen oxide were 5-8 times the permissible limits and after the National Green Tribunal imposed a penalty of Rs 500 crore on VW, the complainant realised that he had been duped of his hard earned money.

He alleged that the accused persons had misrepresented the complainant by forging the documents and devices and caused wrongful gains to themselves and wrongful losses to the complainant. These officials had made wrong records to capture the market, with malafide intent and under a pre-planned conspiracy had induced and defrauded the complainant.

The accused persons are guilty of cheating the customers and have induced the complainant to part with hard earned money for sub-standard cars. The accused are also guilty of forging the documents on which they had sought various clearances.

The complainant has demanded that the allegations may be thoroughly investigated by a senior official.

The West Bengal government has suspended two women teachers in East Burdwan district on the charge of teaching pre-primary students from an English alphabet book consisting of a portion derogatory to the people with a dark complexion.

While presenting the alphabets with corresponding words and images, the book says U is for "Ugly". The illustration printed beside the letter is that of a boy with a dark complexion.

"The book is not part of the textbooks referred by the education department. It was introduced by the school itself. We have zero-tolerance for acts which instil prejudices into the minds of students," Education Minister Partha Chatterjee told reporters here on Thursday.

He said the two teachers of a local municipality-run school have been placed under suspension with immediate effect based on a preliminary investigation and stricter action would be taken against them later.

Though the school is now closed because of the lockdown, the matter came to light when the father of a student of the school was teaching him with the help of that book. He informed other parents and the education department was apprised of the issue, sources said.
