Washington, April 19: The world condemnation of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent visit to the UAE's Abu Mousa island and his provocative remarks continued to escalate on Wednesday with the United States

and Arab forums joining the chorus. The US urged Iran to enter talks with the UAE over the territorial disputes as it criticised President Ahmadinejad for visiting a contested island.

State Department spokesman Mark Toner said the US supported ‘a peaceful resolution' over the three islands of Abu Mousa and the Greater and Lesser Tunbs and backed the UAE's call for the issue to be resolved through talks or at the International Court of Justice.

‘The United States appreciates the UAE's efforts in this regard and urges Iran to respond positively to the UAE's initiative to resolve the issue through direct negotiations,' Toner said in a statement.

‘Actions such as the April 11 visit by Iranian President Ahmadinejad to the Abu Mousa island only complicate efforts to settle the issue,' he said.

In Cairo, the Arab Parliament urged Iran to stop provocative acts over the issue. Arab Parliament Speaker Ali Salem Al Dakbasi reiterated in a statement the Pan-Arab body's complete denunciation and rejection of statements by Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi and former Revolutionary Guard chief Mohsen Rezai who is the current Secretary of the Expediency Discernment Council.

‘While the Arab Gulf states tackle the issue of the three occupied islands of the UAE in a positive, rational and civilised way, the Iranians act in a provocative way which we reject,' Al Dakbasi said.

He accused Iran of using irresponsible threats and statements in an attempt to distract attention from its occupation of another country's territory, adding that this is not the respectable and civilised manner of treating neighbours.

‘If Iran has historical rights to the three UAE's islands, why wouldn't it accept arbitration by the international law and the referral of the whole issue to International Court of Justice,' Al Dakbasi asked.

‘All Arabs back the UAE's defence of its historical rights and full sovereignty on the three islands,' he said, adding: ‘This visit has exposed Teheran's false claims regarding its friendship and peaceful relations with the Gulf countries.'

In New York, the Arab Group at the United Nations, in a letter to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, condemned Ahmadinejad's visit to Abu Mousa Island which is occupied by Iran since 1971, and called for an end to the Iranian occupation.

The letter, addressed by the UAE's permanent representative to UN Ahmed Abdul Rahman Al Jaramain, expressed the Arab Group's concern over the first visit by any top-level Iranian official to the island, stressing that the visit is a flagrant violation of the principles of the international law.

It renewed full support of the Arab Group member countries to the full sovereignty of the UAE over the three islands, in addition to supporting all peaceful measures and means adopted to restore its sovereignty over the occupied islands.

London, Feb 9: A US court has rejected a Turkish attempt to dismiss civil cases brought by protesters who were violently attacked in Washington by Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s security officers.

The incident took place in May 2017 during a visit to the US by the Turkish president. About a dozen bodyguards beat-up a group demonstrating outside the Turkish ambassador’s residence in Washington.

The attack, which was caught on video, left nine people injured and further strained US relations with Turkey.

While criminal charges against the security guards were dropped within a year, around the same time Turkey released a US pastor, the victims pressed ahead with a civil case.

On Thursday, a federal court denied Turkey’s request to have the two cases thrown out on the grounds that it should have sovereign immunity from legal proceedings.

US District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly said the protesters had not posed a threat and were merely gathered on a sidewalk outside the residence at Sheridan Circle when Erdogan’s security burst through a police line and attacked them.

“The Turkish security forces did not have the discretion to violently physically attack the protesters, with the degree and nature of force which was used, when the protesters were standing, protesting on a public sidewalk,” she said. “And, Turkish security forces did not have the discretion to continue violently physically attacking the protesters after the protesters had fallen to the ground or otherwise attempted to flee.”

The judge said Turkey “has not met its burden of persuasion to show that it is immune from suit in these cases.”

The ruling was welcomed by the victims of the attack, which Erdogan stopped to watch as he made his way from his car to inside the residence.

Paris, Apr 9: More than 1.5 million cases of the novel coronavirus have been registered worldwide, according to a tally compiled by AFP at 0530 GMT Thursday from official sources.

Of the 1,502,478 infections, 87,320 people have died across 192 countries and territories since the epidemic first emerged in China late last year.

The tallies, using data collected by AFP from national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO), probably reflect only a fraction of the actual number of infections. Many countries are only testing the most serious cases.

Washington, Apr 2: The total US death toll from the coronavirus pandemic topped 4,000 early Wednesday, more than double the number from three days earlier, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.

The number of deaths was 4,076 -- more than twice the 2,010 recorded late Saturday.

More than 40 percent of recorded deaths nationally were in New York state, the Johns Hopkins data showed.

On Tuesday the United States exceeded the number of deaths in China, where the pandemic emerged in December before spreading worldwide.

The number of confirmed US cases has reached 189,510, the most in the world, though Italy and Spain have recorded more fatalities.

After initially downplaying the threat from new coronavirus in the early stages of the US outbreak, President Donald Trump warned of "a very, very painful two weeks" to come for the country on Tuesday.
