The sale was part of the initiative, Pink Bite - Pink Caravan's breast cancer charity auction event - by Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Thani, Chairman of the Department of Statistics and Community Development, Sharjah, and Co-founder of Musafir.com, in support of their mission of raising awareness about the importance of early detection of breast cancer and offering free screenings.

The UAE's prominent government officials, public figures, all got together at Galeries Lafayette, Le Gourmet - The Dubai Mall, to celebrate their shared spirit of giving at this popular culinary fundraiser.

The higher organising committee of the Pink Caravan announced that the charity auction raised Dh108,755. Seven of Dubai's top chefs got together with Pink Caravan ambassadors, and their support teams, who were paired up in a random draw of chits, who then went on to put together innovative pink-themed creations inspired by Emirati cuisine at their live stations.

Chef Russell Impiazzi along with Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Thani, and his team made what they called the 'Seven Emirates Burgerstack'; Chef Robbie Stokes and social media influencer, Ali al Saloum did a 'Yasa Caviar with hot smoked sturgeon and Al jabab blinis'; Chef Tom Reger and Khawla Al Serkal, Director General, Sharjah Ladies Club cooked up 'Braised short ribs with desert truffles'; Chef Reif Othman and Reem BinKaram put together a 'Pita surprise and steam buns.

Chef Izu and social media influencer Mohannad Al Hasouni tossed up a 'Seafood risotto with pistachio and dried cherry tomatoes'; Chef Colin Clague and life coach Zina Habi did a 'Lobster kibbe with avocado labneh' and Chef Mohammad Orfali teamed up with Olympia Tabash, Partner at Anfasic Dokhoon to present a kebab dish they called 'Roots of my backyard forest'.

During the hour-long auction, all ambassadors tried to sell their dishes at the highest price. Sheikh Al Thani sold four of his signature burgers, one of which was bought by the owner of the luxury lifestyle magazine in the UAE, Villa 88 Magazine, for Dh36,700.

"I have been an ambassador of Pink Caravan since the very beginning, and I am extremely honoured to be here today. Two years ago we broke the world record by selling one burger for $7,000, and this year we wanted to top that. Of course, all proceeds will go to breast cancer awareness and free detection at an earlier stage," said Sheikh Al Thani.

"I am so proud of the charitable spirit of the people here in the UAE. We may be celebrating 2017 as the 'UAE Year of Giving', but for the people of this nation every year is. It is the personal responsibility of every individual to participate in initiatives like the Pink Caravan, for it is one of the best ways to give back to the community," he added.

The delicious Burgerstack was prepared with 7 Al Jassiri with aged cheddar and veal bacon in a saffron brioche burger bun with 7 spices & Harrisa burger sauce. The dish was served with a delicious milkshake.

"One burger bought for $10,000! This was an incredible feat for not just the Pink Caravan and its supporters, but for everyone who supports a good cause in the world. I am proud of Pink Caravan ambassadors who have provided their unfailing support to us to be able to realise our goals. I am happy so many people got together and had such a good time, raising a significant amount of money, which will fuel Pink Caravan's efforts to raise awareness about early detection of breast cancer," said Reem BinKaram, Chairperson of Higher Organising Committee at Pink Caravan Ride.

"The Chefs and Pink Caravan ambassadors really came together! They were all excellent and embraced the spirit of this charitable event night. Not forgetting a big thank you to all our generous customers who managed to raise an incredible sum of money for such a worthy cause," said Russell Impiazzi, Culinary Director of Galeries Lafayette Le Gourmet, The Dubai Mall, thanking everyone for being part of a hugely successful fundraiser.

The Pink Caravan will continue its nationwide tour, ending with a closing ceremony in Abu Dhabi on Friday, 17 March.

Paris, Jul 2: Several interacting exoplanets have already been spotted by satellites. But a new breakthrough has been achieved with, for the first time, the detection directly from the ground of an extrasolar system of this type.

An international collaboration including CNRS researchers has discovered an unusual planetary system, dubbed WASP-148, using the French instrument SOPHIE at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence (CNRS/Aix-Marseille Universite).

The scientists analysed the star's motion and concluded that it hosted two planets, WASP-148b and WASP-148c. The observations showed that the two planets were strongly interacting, which was confirmed from other data.

Whereas the first planet, WASP-148b, orbits its star in nearly nine days, the second one, WASP-148c, takes four times longer. This ratio between the orbital periods implies that the WASP-148 system is close to resonance, meaning that there is enhanced gravitational interaction between the two planets. And it turns out that the astronomers did indeed detect variations in the orbital periods of the planets.

While a single planet, uninfluenced by a second one, would move with a constant period, WASP-148b and WASP-148c undergo acceleration and deceleration that provides evidence of their interaction.

The study will shortly be published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.

New Delhi, Jul 15: The employees union of state-run telecom operator BSNL will stage protests across the country on Thursday on a host of issues including the cancellation of its 4G tender and non-payment of salaries.

All major unions are organising ‘lunch-hour black-flag' demonstrations throughout the country under the banner of All Unions and Association of BSNL (AUAB), said a statement by AUAB. These demonstrations will be organised, by maintaining social distancing and by taking other precautions, like wearing of masks. The BSNL employees will also wear black-badges the whole day on July 16.

The employees body would demand that BSNL should immediately be allowed to roll out its 4G services and the tender should be issued immediately. Further, they want that in the matter of procuring new equipment and upgradation, there should not be any discrimination between BSNL and other private telecom service providers.

Recently, the Centre cancelled the 4G upgradation tender for BSNL as it had decided to come up with fresh specifications for the upgrade process, in a move to keep Chinese technology companies at bay as the border tussle escalated with the northern neighbour.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) would issue a fresh tender for the same, and people in the know said that Chinese companies may not be allowed to participate.

"The agitational programme is being organised to express the deep anguish and resentment of the employees against cancellation of BSNL's 4G tender, cancellation of BSNL's proposal for upgradation of its 49,300 BTSs to 4G, abnormal delay in issuing ‘Add on Order' for 4G equipments, inordinate delay in the implementation of BSNL's Revival Package and against the non-settlement of the burning problems of the employees," said the statement.

The umbrella body of BSNL's employees' unions noted that rolling out of 4G services is the backbone for the revival of this telecom PSU, but the recent cancellation of the tender floated by BSNL for procuring 4G equipment at a cost of Rs 9,300 crore, has brought the company back to square one.

It said that BSNL is already having 49,300 base transceiver stations (BTS), which are 4G compatible and through minor upgradation, all these equipment can be converted into 4G BTSs with an investment of about Rs 1,500 crore.

In addition to this, BSNL could have added another 15,000 BTSs, by placing an Add on Order to the existing mobile tender, it added.

Noting that in October 2019, the PSU could have rolled out pan-India 4G services, AUAB said: "Being the sole owner of the company, the Government of India also cannot shirk its responsibility in this matter."

"Adding insult to injury, the tender floated by BSNL to procure 4G equipment, has been cancelled by the government, based on a complaint from the Telecom Equipments and Services Promotional Council (TEPC)," it said.

AUAB said that BSNL is already lagging four years behind the private operators, in terms of 4G and the cancellation of the tender is going to inordinately delay the company's 4G launch.

Saying that TEPC's contention has been to bar foreign companies from participating in BSNL's tender, AUAB statement pointed out that when private operators are procuring equipment from multinationals, "why BSNL alone should be compelled to procure 4G equipments from domestic vendors, whose 4G technology is not tested or proven so far."

It alleged a conspiracy to destabilise BSNL by disrupting its rolling out of 4G services.

AUAB further said that even after the lapse of nine months, the implementation of the much publicised BSNL's Revival Package is moving at a snail's pace.

"Except the swift retrenchment of 79,000 BSNL employees under VRS, all other assurances given in BSNL's Revival Package have been put in cold storage."

The management should ensure that the salary payment of the employees is made on the last working day of every month. Deductions made from employees' salary, on account of "society dues", should immediately be remitted, it said.

Regarding the monetisation of the company's assets under the revival package, the organisation said that the land asset should not be handed over to corporates, at "throwaway" prices.

"These lands should be sold in a transparent manner and at the prevailing market rates. They should not be sold at book value or at circle rates. The AUAB will strictly monitor these dealings," it said.

While Google is still working on a coronavirus screening and tracking website, Microsoft Bing team has already launched a web portal for tracking COVID-19 infections worldwide.

The website, accessible at bing.com/covid, provides up-to-date infection statistics for each country.

The COVID-19 Tracker currently lists 168,835 as total confirmed cases, 84,558 active cases, 77,761 recovered cases and 6,516 deaths.

There are at least 3,244 confirmed cases of novel coronavirus in the US and at least 61 deaths.

"Lots of Bing folks worked (from home) this past week to create a mapping and authoritative news resource for COVID19 info," Michael Schechter, General Manager for Bing Growth and Distribution at Microsoft, was quoted as saying in a ZDNet report on Sunday.

An interactive map allows site visitors to click on the country to see the specific number of cases and related articles from a variety of publishers.

Data is being aggregated from sources like the World Health Organization (WHO), the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).

Microsoft announced the website two days after US President Donald Trump said Google has begun working on COVID-19-related portal for US citizens.

Google's website is being built by Verily, a subsidiary of Alphabet focused on healthcare services.

"More than 1,700 engineers are currently working on the site", Trump said during a press briefing last week.

The tool will triage people who are concerned about their COVID-19 risk into testing sites based on guidance from public health officials and test availability.

Initially, there was some confusion on Google's coronavirus portal but the company later announced that it is "partnering with the US Government in developing a nationwide website that includes information about COVID-19 symptoms, risk, and testing information."
