Worst overseas defeats by Indian Cricket team

August 19, 2014

dhoni defeatAug 19: No offence to the English, but this Indian team did their fair share to ensure that a woeful overseas record would remain so. Despite an unexpected victory, or maybe because of it, the visitors felt it unnecessary to bother winning the series.

0-4, Australia 1947-8

Facing Bradman

The Indians lost the series 0-4, a result that appears all the more mystifying given the Indian performance in the first class matches of the tour. Before the first Test at Brisbane, the captain Lala Amarnath had established himself as the true leader with a grand 228 against Victoria, an innings Victor Richardson ranked as "one of the greatest ever played" in Australia. Mankad was regarded as the world's premier slow bowler, even better than Hedley Verity.

In fact, not even the most ardent of Australian supporters anticipated the rout that followed. And this rout was almost singlehandedly orchestrated by Donald Bradman. The 39-year-old Bradman was still at his best and his scores - 156 for South Australia, 172 for an Australian XI, (his hundredth first class hundred), 185 in the first Test, 132 and 127 not out in the Third Test, 201 in the fourth Test and 57 retired hurt in the fifth - bear testimony to his contemptuous dominance of the Indian at ..

0-3, England 1952

Despite Mankad

This ranks as one of the worst-ever series losses in the history of Indian cricket because India suffered the ignominy of being reduced to 0 for 4 at Headingley against the fast and fiery Freddie Trueman. Many say the Indians were scared of facing Trueman and capitulated tamely. However, the series did have a silver lining in the form of Vinoo Mankad at Lord's.

Five wickets for 196 runs and two batting efforts of 72 and 184 - Mankad had made Lord's his own even if in a losing cause. Such an allround performance had never before been accomplished in a Test match. SK Gurunathan, in remembering the effort contends, "I had never seen in my life, not altogether devoid of cricketing experiences, such a thrilling performance. To a man, the Lord's crowd rose and cheered Mankad all the way back to the pavilion when he was out."

0-5, West Indies 1962

Knocked Out in Windies

The Indian team, which looked composed and resolute at home, was suddenly in disarray in the West Indies. Faced with hostile fast bowling, the Indian weakness overseas was exposed and skipper Nari Contractor's career-ending injury had all but destroyed the morale of the side. Wess Hall and Charlie Griffith had successfully terrorised the Indians and the 0-5 defeat seemed an inevitable outcome.

Only Umrigar with a brilliant 172 at Port of Spain stood up against the West Indies challenge. The sudden turn in events after Contractor's injury placed the young Tiger Pataudi in charge, regarded by many as one of India's bestever captains.

0-4, England 2011

End of a Batting Era

Having played one two day game in Taunton, the Indians turned up at Lord's totally underprepared. And with Zaheer Khan limping off early on in the second session on Day 1 at Lord's with a hamstring injury, the series just went from bad to worse.

Giving up on a serious opportunity at Trentbridge when England was reduced to 124-8, India slipped to a 0-4 drubbing with the team touching 300 just once in 8 innings. It was time up for India's golden generation of batsmen who had made the team the best in the world in 2009.

Los Angeles, Feb 14: Tributes to the late Kobe Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers legend who died last month in a helicopter crash, will play a major role in Sunday's 69th NBA All-Star Game.

This year's annual showcase of league talent will be played in Chicago and feature numerous nods to Bryant, a five-time NBA champion who also matched a league record with four NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player awards.

Bryant, an 18-time NBA All-Star, died at age 41 on January 26 in a crash near Los Angeles that also took the life of his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others.

All-Star teams guided by LeBron James of the Lakers and Greek star Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks will compete to win each of the first three quarters, which will all start 0-0 and last 12 minutes.

At the start of the fourth quarter, the clock will be turned off and a final target score will be established by taking the leading club's cumulative score through the first three quarters and adding 24 points -- the number representing the jersey number worn by Bryant for the final 10 seasons of his NBA career.

The first team to reach the cumulative target score will win the NBA All-Star Game.

All-Star Game jerseys will also honor Bryant and his daughter.

Team Giannis players will wear jersey number 24 in tribute to Kobe while Team LeBron players will wear jersey number two, the number his daughter wore when playing youth basketball.

Both teams will wear jersey patches displaying nine stars, representing the nine people who were killed in the crash.

Academy Award-winning actress and Grammy Award-winning singer Jennifer Hudson, a Chicago native, will perform a special tribute to Bryant, his daughter and the others who were killed in the crash. Her performance will begin the night ahead of the player introductions.

James and Antetokounmpo each chose their squads from available starters and reserves voted and selected to the All-Star contest.

Team LeBron starters will include James, his Lakers teammate Anthony Davis, NBA scoring leader James Harden of Houston, Kawhi Leonard of the Los Angeles Clippers and Slovenian guard Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks.

Team Giannis starters include the Greek big man, Cameroon stars Joel Embiid of Philadelphia and Pascal Siakam of Toronto and guards Kemba Walker of Boston and Trae Young of Atlanta.

A record eight All-Star Game players from outside the United States also include Frenchman Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz on Team Giannis and Team LeBron reserves Ben Simmons of Australia and the Philadelphia 76ers, Lithuanian Domantas Sabonis of Indiana and Serbian Nikola Jokic of Denver.

New Delhi, Aug 2: The finals of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 will be played on November 20, the sources within the BCCI confirmed on Sunday.

The IPL's governing council met earlier today, and it has also been decided that the evening matches will start at 7:30 pm, half an hour earlier than usual.

Jay Shah, the secretary of BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) and Arun Dhumal, treasurer of BCCI did not attend the IPL's governing council meeting.

"The tournament will run for 51 days, usually the IPL should go on for 49 days as per the constitution, however in the meeting it has been decided that we will go to Supreme Court for conducting the IPL in 51 days," sources within the BCCI said.

"As the tournament is running for 51 days, we will get the chance to play fewer doubleheaders, there would be just 10 double headers, evening matches will start at 7:30 and the afternoon matches will start at 3:30.

The matches will be played across three venues at Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah as travelling here by road is easier and bio-secure environment can be maintained," he added.

The IPL's governing council also confirmed that Women's IPL will also go on and four teams would be participating in it.

"When it comes to women's IPL, there would be four teams and the matches would be played at the time of playoffs for men's IPL," the source said.

The source within the BCCI also said that the governing council would be meeting again to discuss the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for all the franchises that need to be followed in the IPL.

The governing council meeting discussed the quarantine measures along with the standard operating procedures (SOP), bio bubble training facilities, stay and travel of the players.

Issues related to the broadcaster, shifting, and scheduling of the tournament, and DXB app to be downloaded for players and other officials were also discussed as well.

A few days earlier, the IPL Governing Council chairman Brijesh Patel had confirmed that the 13th edition of the mega event will commence on September 19 in the UAE.

This year's IPL was slated to commence from March 29 but the tournament was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) had also confirmed receiving the official Letter of Intent from the BCCI to host the 2020 edition of the IPL.

Bengaluru, Jun 2: Bangladesh opening batsman Tamim Iqbal has said that he was ashamed on seeing the training regime of Indian skipper Virat Kohli.

Iqbal said that the incident happened two-three years back as he thought to himself that why he cannot do the same even when he is the same age as Kohli.

"I must say this, it is not because I am talking to an Indian commentator, India is our neighbour so whatever things they do, it affects Bangladesh as well. We follow what is happening in India, when India changed its approach towards fitness, it impacted Bangladesh the most," Iqbal told Sanjay Manjrekar in a videocast hosted by ESPNCricinfo.

"I have no shame in admitting this, when I saw Virat Kohli running around two-three years ago, I was ashamed of myself, I thought this is a guy who is probably my age, but he is training so much and I have not doing even half of it. We have a great example in our team as well, Mushfiqur Rahim manages himself well regarding fitness," he added.

During his initial days of international cricket, Kohli was fond of chicken which he has admitted several times during media interaction.

But in 2013, the 31-year-old batsman intentionally shifted his focus to fitness, diet, and training.

Now he has become punctual about his diet which has given him a different character on and off the field.

The comparisons between Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar have also kept on growing and many have picked the current Indian skipper to break the records set by Tendulkar.

Tendulkar managed to call time on his career after registering 100 international centuries, while Kohli currently has 70 centuries across all formats.

Currently, Kohli is ranked at the top spot in the ICC ODI rankings while he is in the second place in Tests rankings.
