Mangalore, May 29: Karnataka Tulu Sahithya Academy Chavadi on Tuesday organized a discussion on 'Growth of Tulu Yakshagana' at its premises here.

Senior Yakshagana artistes, who shared their experiences, voiced their concern over the existing situation of Yakshagana and unanimously agreed that something concrete needs to be done in the direction of bringing the art form to its pristine form.

They said that with the society undergoing changes and people adapting themselves to modern lifestyle, expecting the audience to stick to their chairs throughout the night till the Yakshagana prasanga gets over will be a bit too much to ask for.

Most of the artistes said that Yakshagana will have to undergo changes so as to attract more and more audience and this can be done primarily by cutting down the length and duration of the Yakshagana. “If Yakshagana stories are knit in a way to complete the entire tale in three hours like films, why will people not come to watch it,” questioned most of the artistes. Renowned artistes Kolyur Ramachandra Rao, Kumble Sundar Rao, Vishwanath Shetty, Prasanga writer Nithyananda Karantha Polali, Arthadhari Jabbar Samo said that qualitatives innovations, bringing episodes within strict timeframe and attracting more and more youth towards the art form will help in changing the state of Yakshagana for the good.

While Kolyur Ramachandra Rao took the audience to the bygone era and the situation under which Tulu yakshagana was started, Kumble Sundar Rao said that Tulu yakshagana was always looked at critically not only by the audience but also by the artistes. They both said that apprehensions were raised over the survival of Tulu yakshagana even during its inception and from there, the art form has suffered a great deal and reached the point of extinction today. “Yakshagana is 'Aaradhana Kale'.

It is one of the many ways of expressing love to god. Probably, if school and college students are sensitized in this regard and are made to take up Yakshagana as a part of learning, then future for Yakshagana as a whole might be bright,” said Kumble Sundar Rao.

Earlier, Yakshagana artiste and organiser K T Gujaran was felicitated and renowned Tulu theatre personality Devadas Kapikad was honoured with 'Tulunad da birse' award. During the programme two books namely 'Tulunadina Apoorva Bhoothagalu' and 'Belakinedege,' both authored by Researcher Dr Lakshmi G Prasad were released by Dr Kamala Bhat Kalladka.

Academy President Umanath Kotian presided over the meeting.

Bengaluru, Aug 6: No private hospital in Karnataka can turn away a patient without attending to him or her, irrespective of the Coronavirus status, an official has said.

"Private medical establishments shall not deny treatment and admission to any patient approaching the establishment irrespective of the fact that such patient may or may not be suffering from Covid-19," an official from the state Health and Family Welfare Department said on Wednesday.

Likewise, no private hospital can insist on a patient for a Covid-19 test report, said the official invoking the Disaster Management Act.

"The establishments also cannot insist for Covid test report," he said, directing all private hospitals to strictly abide by their responsibilities.

According to the department, it is the duty of every private hospital to provide first aid and take lifesaving steps when any patient approaches it.

"It is the duty of every private medical establishment to provide first aid and take lifesaving measures to stabilise the patient," he said.

The department also invoked statutes from Karnataka Medical Establishments Act 2017, under sections 11 and 11 (A) to drive home the message.

The directives assume significance at a time when several cases of private hospitals denying admissions and fleecing patients across the state have emerged.

"It has been noticed that some of the private hospitals are refusing treatment and admission to emergency patients, causing distress and this has resulted in complications, leading to death in certain cases," said the official.

The district authorities have been directed to take action on the erring hospitals as the department reiterated the responsibilities of private medical establishments.

Mangaluru, Feb 16: Leaving spectators awestruck, Karnataka's Srinivasa Gowda ran 142.5 meters in 13.62 seconds at traditional buffalo race Kambala, following which people started comparing him to former Jamaican Sprinter Usain Bolt.

Gowda, who is from Mudbidri town, accomplished the feat during a Kambala race in a paddy field in Kadri on February 1.

"People are comparing me to Usain Bolt. He is a world champion, I am only running in a slushy paddy field," said Srinivasa Gowda.

People took to social media and drew a parallel between him and Bolt. Twitterati hailed Gowda and his accomplishment on the muddy grounds.

Kambala is an annual buffalo race held in the southwestern state of Karnataka.

Traditionally, it is sponsored by local Tuluva landlords and households in the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi.

"I'll call Karnataka's Srinivasa Gowda for trials by top SAI Coaches. There's lack of knowledge in masses about the standards of Olympics especially in athletics where ultimate human strength & endurance are surpassed. I'll ensure that no talents in India is left out untested," Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju tweeted on Saturday.
