‘Yemen is bleeding’: Minister’s plea to UN food forum

Rome, May 11: The war in Yemen has made “the whole country bleed,” a Yemeni minister told a conference on eliminating hunger in conflict zones.

Othman Hussein Faid Mujali, Yemen’s minister of agriculture and irrigation, said the September day in 2014 when the Houthis mounted their coup was “the worst moment in our history.”

Addressing the Near East Regional Conference at the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Rome, Mujali said: “The Houthis have destroyed all that Yemen has achieved. They made the whole country bleed. Transport, services, health, education, water, electricity — all added to our indignity.”

The three-and-a-half-year conflict between Iran-backed Houthi militias and Yemen government forces had cost the country’s agriculture industry more than $10 million, the minister said.

“Crops have been deleted. There are almost no irrigation channels.”

More than 70 percent of Yemenis work in farming and the overall jobless rate is now about 40 percent. He appealed for veterinary assistance to save livestock and “pave the way for reconstruction.”

Amir Abdullah, deputy executive director of the World Food Program (WFP), said 18 million out of 29 million Yemenis lacked regular access to food and 2 million of those were badly malnourished.

“It seems impossible to lay the foundations for the future in such conditions, but that’s what we must do,” he said. “The WFP aims to bring lifesaving assistance, but it’s just a sticking plaster. It will not solve the problems of the future.”

Lebanon is not at war, but is suffering as a “spillover country,” the Lebanese minister for agriculture, Ghazi Zeaiter, told a sideline event at the conference, which he also chaired.

“Lebanon is directly affected by the war in Syria. Seven years after it started, we are hosting 1.5 million displaced Syrians, half of them children. This is on top of 34,000 Palestinians displaced from Syria and 277,000 Palestinians who were already in Lebanon,” Zeaiter said.

Housing such a large number of refugees — more than any other country — has cost Lebanon $18 billion and led to a 31 percent fall in exports. About 85 percent of the country’s agricultural exports used to go through Syria to the Gulf, but that route was now closed. The country is also spending 18 percent more of its budget on imports.

“Thirty-two percent of Lebanese now live below the poverty line and 10 percent of households are food-insecure,” said Zeaiter.

The presence of Syrian refugees has meant greater competition for jobs, and weak border controls have led to more pest infestation with open-grazing and pollution of the soil and underground water sources.

Pasquale Steduto, FAO regional program leader for the Near East and North Africa, told Arab News that countries could go to war over water unless they learn to control supplies.

“The gap between water supply and demand is widening. It is accelerating and accelerating rapidly,” he said. “Water sources in the Middle East are finite. There is cooperation over trans-boundary issues, but that can be pushed. If it’s pushed too hard, then there could be war over water.”

Abu Dhabi, May 18: Bollywood superstar Salman Khan has recorded a special message for Indian expats in the UAE as the country fights the coronavirus pandemic.

Khan - one of the biggest stars of Bollywood for decades - enjoys a large fan following in the Gulf, which is why Abu Dhabi roped in the actor to record a special video message for expats, urging them to cooperate with authorities in the capital and the country as they carry out sanitisation and testing programmes.

In the video, tweeted by the Abu Dhabi Media Office on Sunday night, the superstar appeals to Indians in Abu Dhabi to become heroes by staying home (stepping out for essential work/errands only), following precautionary measures and simply 'do the right thing' by getting tested if they have any Covid-19-related symptoms.

Khan, who has shot his recent super hit films (Race 3) in the capital, assured expats that Abu Dhabi authorities will not leave the community in these challenging times as it is a hospitable city who takes care of all residents.

"Following preventive measures also protects your family from the virus - so do the right thing as heroes do," Khan concludes.

The second phase of Abu Dhabi's sanitisation and testing in labour areas is underway, which started on May 16. Special testing facilities have been set up in the city for this purpose that test thousands of workers everyday.

As of May 17, UAE has confirmed over 23,000 cases along with over 8,000 recoveries and 220 deaths.

The country recently made a breakthrough in treating Covid-19 by using stem cells to help with the recovery.

The UAE leadership has thanked citizens and residents for their cooperation and assured that the country will take care of everyone in the country - with food and medicines being the red line, and that there will be no shortage of either during the crisis. Stimulus packages have been announced to help businesses stay afloat.

Tehran, Jan 7: Iranian state television says 35 people have been killed and 50 others injured in a stampede that erupted at a funeral procession for a general slain in a US airstrike.

The TV says the stampede erupted in Kerman, the hometown of Gen. Qassem Soleimani where the procession was underway on Tuesday.

A procession in Tehran on Monday drew over 1 million people in the Iranian capital, crowding both main thoroughfares and side streets in Tehran.

Dubai: There aren’t that many job vacancies right now – but be prepared for a 15-20 per cent cut in salary expectations even for those positions that are still open. Businesses in the UAE are definitely not in a generous mood when it comes to hiring, with salary cuts now part of the new normal.

And they are definitely not willing to take on new hires without extracting some cost benefit from them. “We have seen major [salary] cuts across the board in hospitality, real estate, professional services and in retail,” said Vijay Gandhi, regional head at Korn Ferry Digital, the recruitment consultancy.

“And once the headcount correction is complete in [the local] financial services and energy sector, we may see more cuts in rewards and benefits in these categories as well.”

The salary cuts are slowly extending their way into the healthcare sector as well – just about every non-COVID-19 facing medical category is coming across cuts in the number of working hours and, by extension, their take home packages.

By end of June, more businesses and sectors in the UAE will have a better understanding of their short-term revenue prospects. By then, they will also have a better reading on what their staff strength should be – and whether there should be more trimming of the workforce. Or whether they should consider a few hires as well.

A long summer
So, realistically, it could be September before such decisions need to be taken. The coming weeks will then prove to be laden with anxiety for those who are expecting to land a job option after being laid off at their current employers.

There are multiple instances of recruitment decisions having been made in February/March, and then the companies rescinding those offers to the chosen candidates citing the business uncertainty.

“The decision to hire is taking longer – so job creation is now 4-6 weeks from interview and selection compared to 4-6 days in the past,” said Gandhi.

The lucky ones
Recently, free zones and other entities had made it easier for personnel on the visa of one entity being able to smoothly transfer to another if they are likely to be made redundant. “We are seeing more flexibility being offered by the authorities given the circumstances, and the visa transfer process is happening,” said Gandhi.

“But in the vast majority of cases, businesses are going to wait and watch before normal hiring activity starts. Organizations will look to hire from September.”

A few hires are still happening
Even in the business turmoil set off by COVID-19, a few categories are still offering jobs. At the entry level, logistics services personnel and drivers with experience remain in demand.

Not just “routine jobs, there have been confirmations in more technical roles such as procurement and operations in healthcare and e-commerce,” said Gandhi. “Employers should keep an eye for good talent and have the talent acquisition team actively looking for good profiles.

“As such, organizations are not only looking at “right sizing” in numbers but also “future proofing” on what kind of skilled talent will help them in the post-COVID-19 world.”

But for the candidates, the present will be about waiting around for the call to come.
