Bengaluru, Aug 29: In a shocking incident, a youth gouged out his father’s eye with a set of car keys after a clash over a property dispute yesterday in the city.

The accused Abhishek Chethan (35) was arrested by the police while his father S S Parameshwar was admitted a hospital after the coldblooded attack.

According to police the son had been pressuring his father to sign over a property in JP Nagar to him. “The accused entered his father’s house at Shakambari Nagar on Tuesday morning while he was performing a ceremony to mark one month of his wife’s death and attacked him,” said a police officer.

Parameshwar was badly injured as his son allegedly gouged out one of his eyes with the keys and damaged the other.

Abhishek then allegedly pushed his father down and tried to escape. However, the neighbours heard the screams of a family member and when Abhishek tried to flee, they chased him, nabbed him and handed him over to the police.

He has been arrested on the charge of attempt to murder. The neighbours took Parmeshwar, who was bleeding profusely, to a hospital in an autorickshaw. “Doctors told us that they are trying to restore partial eyesight,” said the police.

Abhishek, who works in an automobile company, is the oldest of three children, and lived on the second floor of a building owned by his father.

Parameshwar resided on the first floor. According to the police, soon after their mother passed away last month, Abhishek allegedly got into a fight with his younger brother.

He wanted a house in J P Nagar to be given to him, even though his father had refused his past requests. On Tuesday morning, he visited his father to discuss the matter. Parameshwar opposed his claim, and in a fit of rage, Abhishek allegedly punched his father with a key and gouged out his right eye-ball. He then punched his left eye,” said the police.

Hubballi, Jan 6: Elected representatives of the BJP, Congress and JD(S) on Sunday decided to sink their differences and fight unitedly for Karnataka’s rightful share in the Mahadayi and Kalasa-Banduri water dispute with Goa.

The meeting convened by JD(S) MLC Basavaraj Horatti here saw participation of BJP ministers Prahlad Joshi and Jagadish Shettar, Congress and JD(S) lawmakers, among others.

After a 70-minute closed door meeting, MLC Horatti told reporters that they discussed the water dispute in detail and decided to take steps based on inputs from legal and technical experts on the rightful apportioning of water. “Today, we took the first big step towards the overall development of the region, unencumbered by political divisions,” he said.

Though the air was filled with a sense of jubilation as the issue had united seemingly hostile political parties on one side, a few activists expressed disappointment that the meeting failed to set a timeline to resolve the dispute.

New Delhi, Jan 30: A terrorist opened fire at people peacefully protesting against the contentious citizenship amendment act (CAA) near the Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi this afternoon, causing chaos and panic in the area.

One person has been injured. In a video, the terrorist, wearing a black jacket and a pair of white trousers, can be seen walking on a road, waving a gun as he shouts "who wants Azadi, come I'll shoot you. Then he says, "Yeh lo aazadi (here's your freedom)" and opens fire injuring a student in front of police.

A video of the attack that is being shared widely on social media also showed the assailant also shouting the 'Jai Shri Ram' slogan and warning protesters to chant 'Vande Mataram' if they want to stay in India. The injured student, Shadab, was hit by the bullet in his arm and has been admitted to the Holy Family hospital in Jamia Nagar.

His condition is stated to be stable. The incident took place near the hospital when a protest march was being taken out by students. Students said that the attacker tried to hijack the peaceful protest and threatened the anti-CAA agitators.

The shooting comes in the aftermath of communally charged, hateful and violence provoking rhetoric by several BJP leaders in the run-up to the assembly elections in Delhi.

Junior finance minister Anurag Thakur had on Monday led chants of ‘shoot the traitors’ at a poll rally in north Delhi’s Rithala. The minister prompted "desh ke gaddaron ko..." to which the crowd responded "...goli maaro sa***n ko". The chant translates to "shoot down the traitors who betray the country". Protesters against the CAA and the NRC have often been dubbed anti-national by members of the ruling BJP.

After Thakur’s hate speech, a man carrying a gun was also caught at Delhi's Shaheen Bagh, the venue of mega protests. The man had walked into the protest ground and allegedly brandished the weapon till he was overpowered by the surrounding protesters, eyewitnesses said.
