Yuvraj Singh sold for record Rs16 crore in IPL 8 auction

February 16, 2015

Bangalore, Feb 16: Flamboyant all-rounder Yuvraj Singh on Monday emerged as the costliest cricketer in the IPL 8 players’ auction, bought for a record Rs16 crore ($2.57 million approx) by Delhi Daredevils in Bangalore.

Yuvraj, who carried a base price of Rs2 crore, was sold for the highest ever price in IPL history after a fierce tug of war for his services between Delhi Daredevils (DD) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), who bought him last year for Rs14 crore, at a glitzy auction at a city hotel in Bangalore.

Yuva Raj recod sold However, it was quite a surprise to see Yuvraj going past his last year’s price as he has been out of the Indian team for some time.

Initially, there was a four-way bidding among Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers, Kings XI Punjab and Delhi Daredevils to buy India’s 2011 World Cup hero in the auction conducted by Richard Madley. But once the bidding reached Rs7 crore, RR and KXIP quit, leaving DD and RCB in the fray.

Delhi Daredevils, who have the largest purse of Rs39.75 crore among all the eight franchises taking part in the auction, also bought Sri Lankan captain and all-rounder Angelo Mathews for Rs7.5 crore, the third highest price in the first two rounds of auction.

RCB, who lost to DD in their bid to get Yuvraj and Mathews, bought wicketkeeper batsman Dinesh Karthik for Rs10.5 crore, the second highest price, even though it was Rs1.5 crore lower than the amount he was bought for by DD last year. Surprisingly, former England captain Kevin Pietersen, who was bought for Rs9 crore last year by DD, could get just Rs2 crore as he was sold to Sunrisers Hyderabad at the base price.

Other players sold in the auction were India Test opener Murali Vijay for Rs3 crore (to KXIP), leg-spinner Amit Mishra (Rs3.5 crore by DD), Aaron Finch (Rs3.2 crore by Mumbai Indians), Eoin Morgan (Rs1.5 crore by SRH) and Kane Williamson (Rs60 lakh by SRH).

Sri Lankans Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara and South African Hashim Amla went unsold in the first two rounds for marquee players which was attended by Nita Ambani, Ricky Ponting, Anil Kumble, V.V.S Laxman, Muttiah Muralitharan, Rahul Dravid, Gary Kirsten, Stephen Fleming, Vijay Mallya and Preity Zinta among others.

Mumbai, May 21: Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has chosen legendary Sachin Tendulkar over current skipper Virat Kohli as a better batsman in the ODI format, considering the changed rules of the game and the Mumbaikar's longevity of career.

Tendulkar, who retired in 2013, played 463 ODIs and amassed 18, 426 runs with 49 hundreds at an average of 44.83.

Kohli, on the other hand, has played 248 ODIs and scored 11, 867 runs with 43 tons at an average of 59.33.

"Sachin Tendulkar, because probably with one white ball and four fielders inside the circle, not five fielders outside, it will be Sachin Tendulkar for me," Gambhir said on Star Sports show 'Cricket Connected'.

Nowadays, a one-day innings is played with two white balls and with three powerplays.

In the first power play (overs 1-10), two fielders are allowed beyond the 30-yard circle, while in the second powerplay (overs 10-40) four fielders are allowed. In the last powerplay (overs 40-50), five fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle.

Gambhir, who was the star performer in 2011 ODI World Cup final which India won, feels that the change in rules has helped batsmen.

"It's difficult because Virat Kohli has done phenomenally well but I think the rules have changed as well, which has helped a lot of new batters," elaborated Gambhir, who played 58 Tests and 147 ODIs.

"The new generation, with 2 new balls, no reverse swing, nothing for the finger spin, five fielders inside for the 50 overs, probably that makes batting much easier.

He said he would also go with Tendulkar, considering his longevity and flow of the ODI cricket format at that time.

"Probably I’ll go with Sachin Tendulkar if we see the longevity and flow of the one-day cricket format.

"Look at how Sachin Tendulkar has played, different rules, that time 230 to 240, was a winning total," Gambhir signed off.
