Aam Aadmi Party-Congress rule in Delhi promises to be a short and stormy affair

New Delhi, Dec 24: Shortly after it pulled off the biggest political surprise in recent years by its stunning electoral debut, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has followed it up by taking an unexpected risk of forming the government with Congress support.

Given the apparent dislike both parties have for each other, a fact proved by near vitriolic statements from prominent Congress and AAP leaders even on the day when Arvind Kejriwal staked claim, it promises to be a short and stormy affair between the two before a near-certain bitter divorce.

For the AAP, which was formed mainly on an anti-corruption plank and gained popularity by attacking the Congress-led government, the decision to accept the Congress offer is double-edged.

The Congress, already decimated in the capital, seems to be content to wait till the debutant AAP fails to deliver on what it terms “unrealistic promises” before it decides to pull the rug.

The degree of mistrust between the two sides can be gauged by the public statement from prominent AAP leader Prashant Bhushan. “We are aware that the Congress may pull down our government sooner or later. We are not in any coalition and will implement our agenda irrespective of what the Congress may want he said.

The Congress, a section of whose state leadership was opposed to providing any support to the AAP, also hinted that it is not interested in keeping the debutant party in power for long.

“We will support them as long they deliver. We know it is not possible to fulfil the kind of promises they made,” said outgoing chief minister Sheila Dikshit.

The AAP leadership, being fully aware of the pitfalls in having accepted the Congress support, has gone ahead with its risky decision in an apparent bid to expand beyond the Capital.

A strong view within the party is that even a short tenure will provide it with a chance to show the difference it can make. The party plans to use any goodwill gathered during their Delhi stint for the 2014 general elections.

New Delhi, Feb 12: The Centre on Wednesday said the NRC data in Assam is safe even though some technical issues were visible and that will be resolved soon.

The Union Home Ministry clarification came in view of reports that data of the final list of the National Register of Citizens has been made offline from its official website.

"The NRC data is safe. Some technical issues are in visibility on cloud. These are being resolved soon," a home ministry spokesperson said.

The data was not available for a couple of days and it created panic in the public, mostly among the people excluded from the list as the rejection certificates were yet to be issued.

NRC State Coordinator Hitesh Dev Sarma accepted that the data has been made offline, but refuted the allegation of any "malafide" intent in it.

The cloud service for the huge set of data was provided by IT firm Wipro and their contract was till October 19 last year. However, this was not renewed by the previous coordinator.

So, the data got offline from December 15 after it was suspended by Wipro, Sarma said.

He said the state coordination committee had decided to do necessary formalities in its meeting on January 30 and wrote to the Wipro during the first week of February.

"Once Wipro makes the data live, it will be available for public. We hope people will be able to access it in the next 2-3 days," Sarma said.

The complete detail of exclusion and inclusion of bonafide Indian citizens in the NRC was uploaded on its official website http://www.nrcassam.nic.in after the final list was published on August 31, 2019.

The final NRC was published by excluding 19,06,657 persons. A total of 3,11,21,004 names were included out of 3,30,27,661 applicants.

After the earlier NRC State Coordinator Prateek Hajela relinquished the charge on November 11 following his transfer to home state Madhya Pradesh on a direction from the Supreme Court, Sarma was appointed in his place on November 9.

The Indian Defence Ministry, which had in its document that China intruded into the Indian territory in eastern Ladakh in early May, on August 6 took down the page which it had uploaded on its website.

According to a report by news channel NDTV, the ministry, in its document, had said the Chinese aggression has been "increasing along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and more particularly in Galwan valley since May 5."

"The Chinese side has transgressed in the areas of Kungrang Nala, Gogra and north bank of Pangong Tso Lake on May 17-18," the document, titled 'Chinese Aggression on LAC' stated.

The document revealed that "... a violent face-off incident took place between the two sides on June 15, resulting in casualties on both sides."

After the clash, a second corps commander level meeting took place on June 22 to discuss the modalities of de-escalation. "While engagement and dialogue at military and diplomatic level is continuing to arrive at mutually acceptable consensus, the present standoff is likely to be prolonged," it said.

A defence ministry spokesperson told the news channel that the document "did not go through him".

The opposition Congress, meanwhile, asked the government why the report was taken down with party leader Rahul Gandhi alleging that removal of the document from websites would not change facts.

"Forget standing up to China, India's PM lacks the courage even to name them. Denying China is in our territory and removing documents from websites won't change the facts," Gandhi tweeted.

New Delhi, Jun 27: Fuel prices were hiked by the oil marketing companies for the 21st day in a row on Saturday. Petrol and diesel will now cost Rs 80.38/litre and Rs 80.40/litre respectively in the national capital.

The price of petrol is increased by Rs 0.25 per litre while that of diesel by Rs 0.21 per litre.
Rates differ from state to state depending on the incidence of value-added tax (VAT).

Notably, oil marketing companies have been adjusting retail rates in line with costs after an 82-day break from rate revision amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. These firms on June 7 restarted revising prices in line with costs.

The Congress party had called the increase in the price of petrol and diesel 'unjust', 'thoughtless' and demanded from the Central government to roll back increase with immediate effect and pass on the benefit of low oil prices directly to the citizens of this country.
In an official statement, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) had said that no government should levy and impose such unacceptable strain on its people.

Before the nation entered the lockdown, the average price of petrol and diesel in Delhi was Rs 69.60 per litre and Rs 62.30 per litre respectively.
