Babri Masjid demolition: 25 years later judicial verdict still long way off

Lucknow, Dec 6: The hearing of the Ram Janambhoomi-Babri Masjid tittle suits may have begun in the Supreme Court, raising hopes of an early settlement of the vexed issue but the progress in the mosque demolition case remains tardy.

A judicial verdict seems a long way off even 25 years after the disputed structure was razed by thousands of karsevaks on December 6, 1992, in Ayodhya.
Currently, the prosecution's witnesses are deposing before the special CBI court, after which the defence would be presenting their witnesses.

The lawyers associated with the case say that there are 196 prosecution witnesses in all, who would be deposing. After their deposition, many of them may also be cross-examined by the defence lawyers, taking up more time. So far more than 60 prosecution witnesses have deposed.

Many of those, who were main plaintiffs in the Ram Janambhoomi-Babri Masjid title suits, including the oldest litigant Hashim Ansari, Mahant Ramchandra Paramahans Das and Mahant Bhaskar Das, have expired.

Legal experts opine that an early verdict in the demolition case may not be possible in view of the complications associated with the matter.

''The apex court order setting a time limit and daily hearing will, however, expedite things,'' remarked a lawyer.

Conspiracy charge

The special court has already framed criminal conspiracy charges against senior BJP leaders L K Advani, Uma Bharti and Murli Manohar Joshi for their role in the demolition.

The Supreme Court had earlier restored the criminal conspiracy charge against Advani, Joshi and Uma Bharti and transferred the trial from the Raebareli special court to Lucknow. It also ordered that the trial of the case would be held on a daily basis.

The apex court may have directed the special CBI court here to hold daily hearing of the case and dispose it within two years, but experts say it may be difficult to deliver a verdict within the set time frame though not impossible.

New Delhi, Aug 2: The Centre has written to all states and Union Territories stating that smartphones and tablet devices should be allowed for hospitalised Covid-19 patients so that they can interact with family and friends through video conferencing, which would provide them psychological support.

Though mobile phones are allowed in hospital wards, the missive was issued following some representation from the kin of patients alleging otherwise.

Director-General of Health Services (DGHS) in the Health Ministry Dr Rajiv Garg in the letter to the principal secretaries of health and medical education of states and Union territories said appropriate protocols for disinfecting devices and allotting timeslots can be developed by the hospital concerned to facilitate contact between patients and their family.

He underlined that administrative and medical teams should be responsive to the psychological needs of patients admitted in Covid-19 wards and ICUs of various hospitals.

"Social connection can calm down patients and also reinforce the psychological support given by the treating team. Please instruct all concerned that they should allow smartphones and tablet devices in patient areas so that the patient can video conference with their family and friends," stated the letter issued on July 29.

"Though mobile phones are allowed in the wards to enable a patient stay in touch with his or her family, we received representations from the patient families from some states stating mobile phones are not being allowed by hospital administrations because of which they were not being able to stay in contact with the patient," said Dr Garg.

New Delhi, Mar 25: The Indian Rail Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) on Wednesday appealed to the people not to cancel their e-tickets on their own in case of trains being cancelled by the national transporter due to nation-wide lockdown to help curb the spread of novel coronavirus pandemic.

Clearing the doubts of the railway passengers, IRCTC spokesperson Siddharth Singh said, "Doubts have been raised regarding cancellation of e-tickets subsequent to the halting of railway passenger trains.

"It may be submitted that for trains cancelled by the railways in its complete run, refund on e-tickets is full and automatic. In this case, no cancellation exercise is required to be done on the part of the user," he said.

The IRCTC official said that if user cancels his e-ticket in situations of train cancellations, there are chances he may get "less refund". "Hence passengers are advised not to cancel e-tickets on their own for those trains which have been cancelled by the railways," he said.

He also said that the refund amount will be credited to the user account used for booking e-tickets automatically and no charges will be deducted by the railways in case of train cancellation.

His remarks came as the national transporter announced the suspension of the passenger, mail and express services from March 23 till March 31. However, the railways extended the suspension of services till April 14 in the wake of the three week lockdown announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from March 25 during his second special address to the nation on Tuesday night.

The railways has cancelled over 13,600 passengers trains across the country in a bid to combat the spread of novel coronavirus. Only freight trains are running to ensure the supply of essential services. About 9,000 freight trains are transporting essential items every day across the country.

On Wednesday, India recorded 562 cases of COVID-19 with 10 deaths.

Srinagar, Apr 4: Two militants were reportedly killed in an encounter with security forces in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, police said.

The security forces launched a cordon and search operation based on intelligence inputs about the presence of militants in Hardmand Guri village in Kulgam, a police spokesperson said.

"This operation based on a credible police input was launched this morning. Two terrorists have been reportedly killed so far," the spokesperson said, adding that the exchange of fire was going on.

Earlier, the police tweeted on its official handle that three militants had been trapped in the cordon. "Same group of #terrorists trapped who killed 3 civilians recently," the police said.
