Mangaluru, Apr 2: Bowlers of Mangalore United ruled the roost as they unnerved Karkala Gladiators batsmen in an one-sided final match at Dr B R Ambedkar Stadium on the outskirts of the city to clinch the Mangalore Premier League-2018 trophy last night.

The fourth edition of the MPL was jointly organized by the Brand Vision Events, Mangalore Occasionals and Sea Bird Cricket Academy with the approval and guidance of Karnataka State Cricket Association. A total of 12 teams had participated in the tourney which commenced on March 20.

Akshay Ballal-led Mangalore United had entered the summit round with a great strain as they had to go through a Super Over to defeat T4 Super Kings in a nail-biting seminal on Saturday. In the finale, however, the situation was quite different as it seemed that the Gladiators had poised to surrender themselves halfway through by laying down the weapons in the battlefield.

After turning in a command bowling performance to skittle Suhel Semitha –led team for a mere 72 in 16.1 overs, the explosive Mangalore United batting line-up secured the team's triumph over Karkala Gladiators with almost eleven more overs to spare in the T20 match.

Gladiators never recovered from an early triple strike as eight of their eleven players returned to the dugout even before making a double-digit score. Only Nithin Mulky (29 off 25 balls), Suhel Semitha (11 off 12 balls) and Afwan Karkala (10 off 15 balls) reached double figures.

Aggressive all-rounder Ballal, who claimed 3 wickets for 18 runs in four overs, proved deadly for Gladiators in batting too. He smashed a blistering 48 off 30 balls comprising nine authoritative fours to emerge as the man of the match. In the first ball of the 10th over, Mangalore United crossed the Gladiators’ target and scored 74 runs after losing two wickets.

Incidentally, Mangalore United is owned by B A Mohiuddin Bava, the MLA of Mangaluru City North and a local patron of cricket, whose team with the same name had in the past emerged champions in Karnataka Premiere League (KPL) too.

Bengaluru, Feb 22: President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday said an ideal trade-off needs to be reached between new media -- which is fast and popular -- and traditional media which has developed skills to authenticate a news report, which is a costly operation.

Addressing the fourth edition of ‘the Huddle’ – the annual thought conclave of the Hindu here, he asserted that the internet and social media had democratised journalism and revitalised democracy, but had also led to many anxieties.

While the new media was fast and popular and people could choose what they wanted to watch, hear or read, traditional media would have to introspect on its role in society and find ways to earn the reader’s full trust again as "the project of democracy was incomplete without informed citizens – which means, without unbiased journalism."

Debate and discussion were internalised in India’s social psyche to arrive at truth since time immemorial, he said.

"There is no doubt that perception of truth is conditioned by circumstances. The conditions that cloud the truth’s positions are effectively dispelled by a contestation of ideas through debate, discussion and scientific temper. Prejudices and violence vitiate the search for truth."

Expressing happiness to attend ‘The Huddle’ organised by The Hindu, he said the Hindu group of publications had been relentlessly aiming to capture the essence of this great country through its responsible and ethical journalism. He commended them for their insistence on sticking to the five basic principles of journalism – truth-telling, freedom and independence, justice, humaneness and contributing to the social good, an official release here said.

Mr Kovind said dogmas and personal prejudices distorted the truth. In the 150th year of Gandhiji’s birth, he asked all to ponder over this question: "will it not be proper to pursue truth itself as the ideology? Gandhiji has shown us the path by walking ceaselessly in search of truth which would ultimately encompass every positive attribute that enriches the universe."

Bengaluru, Jul 2: Karnataka Health Minister B Sriramulu on Thursday launched the ICU Telecard, developed by CISCO to address the concerns of doctors treating coronavirus patients.

Wi-Fi networks and Cisco Health platform help to protect the entire medical team dealing with the infected person by ensuring that doctors do not have to be inside isolation wards and COVID ICUs.

The ICU Telecard has been installed at Victoria and KC General hospital.

"This technology is a necessity to safeguard health of our doctors and it should be implemented in all hospitals. We will discuss about this in the task force meeting and decide regarding the use of this technology in all COVID hospitals in the state. For now, we have installed one at Victoria and KC General hospital" said the minister.

Addressing the complaints of non-release of dead bodies without coronavirus testing, Sriramulu said: "Experts have discussed the same in a meeting with the Chief Minister yesterday, who has ordered for an increase in the number of testing labs. This should resolve the issue. We are also contemplating the conduct of plasma therapy in all districts."

The minister said that the government has also decided to reserve two ambulances for every ward to address the issue of non-availability and will procure more ambulances on rent if the existing ones are insufficient.

He further informed that those who were seen dumping the bodies in a pit in Ballari have been suspended and notice has also been served to officials in Yadagiri.

"We will ensure such instances do not repeat in the state," he said.
