Lucknow, Oct 1: Two days after a man was lynched to death by a mob accusing him of storing beef at home in Bisada village falling in Greater Noida region, the state government announced that the victim's family will be given a compensation of Rs 10 lakh. Senior police officials reiterated that beef is not banned in Uttar Pradesh. The area which falls under the Gautam Budhnagar district continued to be tense after the Monday night killing which also saw the victim Mohd Ikhlaq's son Danish, being beaten up badly.
Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav directed police and administrative officials to provide security to the affected family and speedy action against those who are still at large. Six arrests have been made so far and a hunt is on to nab others involved in the incident. Akhilesh, while insisting that those involved in the incident should not be spared, directed that those trying to spread rumours be also booked. DGP Jagmohan Yadav said: "We are probing the entire case. How it started and how the victim was killed with stones and sticks. Who organised it, everything will be out soon".
As rumours of beef being consumed spread, violence was reported from areas neighbouring Bisada village, including Ooncha Amirpur village where a big crowd clashed with police on Tuesday. A large police force was rushed in from neighbouring districts, and was deployed in the area to control any fallout of the incident with communal overtones. SP Rural, Sanjay Singh, said: "A meeting was held at the village temple where some people claimed that Ikhlaq had committed cow slaughter and the carcass can be seen in the neighbourhood. A crowd gathered and it was decided to teach Ikhlaq a lesson. The accused have confessed to their act".
