Bengaluru, Jan 13: The bypolls to three assembly constituencies in Karnataka on February 13 will have political parties on their toes, with Hebbal in Bengaluru being the hotly contested one.

bypollThe Election Commission has announced bypoll dates to Hebbal, Bidar and Deodurg (in Raichur district). Polling will be on February 13 and counting of votes on February 16. Of these three, the BJP held two seats and the Congress one.

The vacancies were caused following the death of A Venkatesh Naik, who represented Deodurg, in the Bengaluru-Nanded train accident in August 2015, while Gurupadappa Nagamarapally from Bidar and R Jagadeesh Kumar from Hebbal, died due to a cardiac arrest. Hebbal, with a little over 2 lakh voters, has many from the Congress eyeing the ticket. A new constituency carved out during delimitation in 2008, it has been the BJP's domain since then. Congress sources said there are at least a dozen contenders, including three MLCs.

Congress MLCs HM Revanna, Byrathi Suresh and RV Venkatesh are lobbying for the ticket. While Revanna had a long innings till June 2020 in the council, he was a serious contender for the seat in the 2013 assembly polls. The ticket was given to Congress veteran CK Jaffer Sharief 's grandson Rahman Sharief, who lost by 5,036 votes.

The tenure of Suresh and Venkatesh in the council will end in June 2016. Suresh, who is the cousin of Congress MLA Byrathi Basavaraj, won the council seat from the legislative assembly defeating the party's official candidate Iqbal Ahmed Saradgi. He was the JD(S) sponsored candidate and upset the calculations of all parties by bagging the highest number of votes due to cross-voting.

Sources said the Congress leadership may opt for a Muslim candidate and this narrows the choice to state youth Congress president Rizwan Arshad and Sharief 's grandson. Arshad was asked to make way for Rahman Sharief in 2013. With the constituency having roughly 65,000 Muslim voters, the chances of the party giving the ticket to a Muslim, considering there was none in the recently concluded polls to 25 seats to the council from the local authorities' constituencies, are high.

The Bengaluru Karavali Samudaya, an association of people from the coastal region settled in the city , want the ticket to be given to Ravi Shankar Shetty who lost out from the same constituency in 2008. The ticket was given to Revanna, who lost to BJP's Katta Subramanya Naidu.

Meanwhile, the BJP is considering to give the ticket to Kumar's wife as it plans to cash in on the sympathy factor. Naidu is said to have asked the ticket for his daughter-in-law as he is facing court cases on land denotification.

Bengaluru, Mar 13: Several ministers staying at the Bengaluru resort had been emotionally pressurised to leave the Congress party, said Congress leader Jitu Patwari on Thursday after he was rescued by party leader DK Shivakumar from getting arrested due to the scuffle that had broken out at Embassy Boulevard here.

"We had received information that one of the MLAs, Manoj Chaudhary, staying at the Boulevard wanted his father to bring him back home," Patwari told reporters.

He said, "We had accompanied Manoj's father to the resort but the moment we entered the restaurant at the resort, some miscreants took away Manoj to some other unknown place," Patwari told reporters.

"Meanwhile, we (Lakhan Singh and Jitu Patwari) were manhandled and taken to the police station," he added.

Patwari said that the police had started the process of arresting them but Shivakumar came to their rescue and stopped their arrest.

He further said, "The police manhandled us even though we tried to talk to them in a very calm manner."

"If the MLAs giving resignation was their decision then why is the BJP not allowing them to contact their families," the MP said.

He further said that Jyotiraditya Scindia would soon become a minister but "why are the other ministers being made scapegoats."

Earlier in the day, a Congress leader in Madhya Pradesh had said that if action on the assaulters of its two leaders is not taken then the matter will be taken to the court.

Bengaluru, Apr 30: Karnataka has decided to allow all industries located outside COVID-19 containment zones to operate from May 4, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa said Thursday, even as he cautioned that the coronavirus crisis may last another couple of months.

“We feel that the COVID-19 menace is reducing and coming under control in the state. In Bengaluru, not many cases have been reported in the last 3-4 days. If this continues, it’ll help us open up industries in and around Bengaluru also. We’ll wait for another 2-3 days,” Yediyurappa told reporters after chairing a meeting of the Cabinet.

Yediyurappa and Industries Minister Jagadish Shettar are scheduled to meet industry captains on Thursday evening to discuss resuming operations from May 4.

"It won't be a surprise if the corona continues for another 2-3 months. However, based on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's directions, stringent lockdown measures (at red zones) and reviving economic activity will go hand in hand," Yediyurappa said.

The Cabinet decided to allow one-time inter-state or inter-district movement of people and labourers stranded due to the Covid-19 lockdown. The move will also benefit students and others who want to return to their native states or districts.

The government will also allow people from Karnataka residing in other states to return only if they are tested negative for Covid-19, Law Minister JC Madhuswamy said. An official order for this will be issued by evening today.

"Expenses should be covered by those wishing to travel. The government is willing to arrange buses for their benefit," Madhuswamy said. The government will provide a license to anyone who wishes to go, he said.

Having relaxed norms for industries outside red zones to resume operations, Madhuswamy said that inter-district passes will be issued to the top management of these units to travel from their homes to workplaces.

Liquor outlets, saloons and restaurants will remain closed till May 3, after which the government will take a call based on directions issued by the Centre.

“Opening of malls and hotels is not an option before us right now. But all hotels can give parcels,” Yediyurappa said. “I’m confident that the PM will allow the resumption of all activities.

He has already said that corona (containment) and economic activities will have to go hand in hand. So, I’m expecting the Centre to make some favourable decisions,” he added.
