Chennai continues to reel under floods

December 4, 2015

Chennai, Dec 4: Rescue operations were in full swing on Thursday in the worst flood-affected areas of Chennai, its suburbs and neighbouring districts that enjoyed a welcome respite from the torrential rain.chennai1

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted an aerial survey and later announced
Rs 1,000 crore additional aid.

Heavy rain, however, continued to lash coastal Cuddalore, Villupuram and Kanyakumari districts and Puducherry as the death toll in the state rose to at least 300. The city remained virtually cut off from the rest of the country with air, rail and roadway connections remaining suspended.

The Grand Southern Trunk Road that links Chennai with Madurai and beyond was cut off as a result of breaches in several places in Kanchipuram district.

The Southern Railway also cancelled all inter and intra-state train services till Saturday while the airport operations remain suspended till Sunday.

The public transport in the city was also crippled as the arterial main roads continued to be waterlogged.

Hardships on the ground
Prices of milk, vegetables and food items skyrocketed because of short supply and people were forced to fork out huge sums for buying essentials. S Thiyagarajan, a software engineer living in Mudichur, said soon after his rescue, “I took some bread packets with me to feed my children and wife.”

The man, who saved his two children by climbing up the first floor of his house soon after the flood entered on Tuesday midnight, added, “Though my house is built more than 5 feet above ground, the water came up six feet into the first floor.” Many pet lovers, who were left stranded, had to leave their pets at home as the rescue teams did not allow them in boats.

Social network-savvy teenagers like Chennu Shankar posted pictures and comments on rain and floods on Facebook but even such initiatives were shortlived as mobile, landline and Internet services came to a grinding halt since Tuesday morning. Even those who witnessed the devastating cyclone “Thane” two years ago said they had never seen something like this.

Rescue teams battle
With the Tsunami-like flood sweeping the state capital and Thiruvallur and Kanchipuram districts, the rescue teams of the Army, Navy, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Coast Security Group had a horrible time.

A total of 28 NDRF teams with over 1,200 personnel were deployed in Chennai where they rescued around 5,000 people by deploying over 110 boats. Two NDRF teams were also deployed in Puducherry.

Air Force personnel dropped food packets to distressed people living on rooftops. A total of 14 lakh food packets were distributed, the state government said.

As many as 255 Navy personnel were also in action with 12 boats and 15 helicopters.
Painful rescue attempts, including lifting several hundred disabled people with their wheelchairs by the rescue teams, were seen in the flood-affected areas.

“It is very difficult to take our boats to the flooded areas immediately since the water force is very high,” C Sylendra Babu, Additional Director General of Police of the Coastal Security Group, Tamil Nadu, told Deccan Herald.

But even the heroic attempts were not always successful.
The personnel recovered the body of a 55-year-old woman, who drowned in the flood water inside her house, in the badly hit Mudichur area in Chennai suburbs.

“We also pulled several dead bodies from inside the house", an NDRF member said.
Though many hospitals were opened, but shortage of medicines, food and potable water created problems. Even those who wanted to leave the city couldn't do so since the communication was shut.

Prime Minister Modi, who undertook an aerial survey of the flood-hit areas of Chennai and its suburbs later met Chief Minister J Jayalalitha.

New Delhi, Jun 11: Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot has obliquely hinted that the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is pulling out all stops to destabilise the Congress-led government by luring some of the ruling party’s members of the legislative assembly (MLAs) with Rs 25 crore each.

He alleged that the BJP’s plan is similar to that of toppling the erstwhile Kamal Nath-led government in Madhya Pradesh (MP) and some of his party lawmakers have been offered Rs 10 crore each in advance of the promised sum of Rs 25 crore.

The CM made these allegations while speaking to media persons late on Wednesday night, when the Congress took its 107 party MLAs and 13 independent lawmakers to a resort located on the outskirts of Jaipur for a meeting ahead of the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls for three seats from the desert state slated to be held on June 19.

The 120 MLAs will be shifted to the resort on Thursday.

“Our MLAs are intelligent, alert, and united. Rajasthan is the only state in the country, where 13 independent MLAs supported our government for neither exchange of any money nor post. However, the condition on which our MLAs left the party for the BJP in MP is not good,” Gehlot said.

Rajasthan government’s chief whip Mahesh Joshi in a complaint to the director-general, anti-corruption bureau (ACB), has alleged attempts to poach Congress MLAs and the independent lawmakers, who are supporting the Gehlot-led government.

“Attempts are being made to destabilise the government in Rajasthan on the lines of Karnataka and MP,” Joshi alleged.

Gehlot said that he would hold another round of meeting with the 107 Congress and 13 independent MLAs on Thursday.

The CM also targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that the Upper House elections were postponed under pressure because the BJP could not poach an adequate number of MLAs in Rajasthan and Gujarat.

He blamed the saffron party for its lack of faith in democracy, as it has ensured the resignation of eight Congress MLAs in Gujarat since March, including three earlier this week.

Mukesh Pareek, BJP’s state spokesperson, refuted the allegations levelled by CM Gehlot against his party and asked the ruling Congress to give evidence of alleged poaching of its and independent lawmakers.

‘The Congress has failed to manage its own house. There is growing resentment in the party’s rank and file over its failed national leadership,” Pareek alleged.

Srinagar, Mar 7: Two more accused, including a man who allegedly bought chemicals online for making improvised explosive device (IED) to be used in an attack on a convoy of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama last year, were arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday, an official said.

The terror attack left 40 CRPF personnel dead in south Kashmir's Pulwama last year.

Waiz-ul-Islam, 19, from Srinagar and Mohammad Abbass Rather, 32, from Pulwama were arrested by the NIA, taking the number of those arrested in the case in the past week to five.

"During initial interrogation, Islam disclosed that he used his Amazon online shopping account to procure chemicals for making IEDs, batteries and other accessories on the directions of Pakistani Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorists," the official said.

He said Islam personally delivered the items to the JeM terrorists after buying them online as a part of the conspiracy to carry out the attack.

"Rather is an old overground worker of the JeM. He has disclosed that he gave shelter at his home to Jaish terrorist and IED expert Mohd Umar after he came to Kashmir in April-May 2018," the official said.

Rather also sheltered other JeM terrorists - suicide bomber Adil Ahmad Dar, Sameer Ahmed Dar and Kamran, a Pakistani -- at his house before the Pulwama attack, the official said.

"He also facilitated safe shelter for the JeM terrorists, including Adil, at the house of accused Tariq Ahmed Shah and his daughter Insha Jan of Hakripora, who were arrested on March 3," the official said.

He said Islam and Rather will be produced before the NIA special court in Jammu on Saturday, while further investigation in the case continues. The NIA took over the case to probe the conspiracy behind the February 14, 2019, attack in Pulwama.

The last video of Adil, which was released by the JeM from Pakistan after the terror attack, was filmed at the home of Tariq Ahmed Shah. On February 28, the NIA achieved a major breakthrough in the case when it arrested 22-year-old Shakir Bashir Magrey, a furniture shop owner and resident of Pulwama.

Magrey had given shelter and other logistical assistance to suicide bomber Adil. He was introduced to Adil in mid-2018 by Pakistani terrorist Mohammad Umar Farooq and he became a full-time OGW of the JeM.

The explosives used in the attack were determined through forensic probe to be ammonium nitrate, nitro-glycerin and RDX. During investigation into the attack, the identity of the suicide bomber to be Adil Ahmad Dar was confirmed through DNA matching with that of his father.

The other key terrorists involved in the attack have been found to be JeM's south Kashmir divisional head Muddasir Ahmad Khan, killed in an operation by the security forces on March 11 last year; Pakistani terrorists Muhammad Umar Farooq and IED expert Kamran, both killed on March 29 last year; the owner of the car Sajjad Ahmad Bhat, a resident of Anantnag who was killed on June 16 last year, and Qari Yassir, JeM's commander for Kashmir who was killed on January 25 this year.
