Why do they resort to mockery of the Prophet?

We hear about the blasphemy and mockery of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) at certain intervals. This is not a new phenomenon but happened all the time throughout the ages. Moreover, this kind of mockery is not limited to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) alone. It also happened to many other revered Prophets who came before him, especially in the history of Jews, who tried to crucify Jesus Christ (pbuh), killed John the Baptist and others.

muhammadOne such effort is done very recently by some very insignificant people in USA, which created huge uproar in many parts of the world. They produced a malicious and blasphemous film ‘Innocence of Muslims’. The mastermind of this renewed blasphemy was an Egypt-born Coptic Christian, who is an illegal immigrant in USA. He along with one hundred Jews, collected some money, produced a very substandard film and posted in YouTube, which is available for free for anyone to propagate anything they want.

The irony is that these kinds of malicious materials are widely tolerated by many modern countries - which claim to be democratic and free countries - under the pretext of freedom of opinion.

Is this Freedom of Opinion?

In fact there is a clear line between freedom of opinion and blasphemy. Freedom of opinion is to express something candid, good, bad or different view point openly. Islam too advocates and respects freedom of opinion. The Quranic verse, “Allah does not like the public mention of evil except by the one who has been oppressed,” (4: 148) hints that if a person is oppressed, he can even pronounce the evil talk in public. This is just an example to see to what extent Islam gives and encourages freedom of opinion.

Meanwhile, if someone approaches you and abuses your father, or any other respectable personality by saying that he was a womanizer, an oppressor, a child molester and makes a fictitious film depicting the same and supplies it to the masses through various media, will you tolerate him for the sake of freedom of opinion?

Surely, this will not remain in the parameter of freedom of opinion; it is called blasphemy and generally not tolerated by anyone in a civilised society. Tolerating blasphemy is not tantamount to respecting freedom of opinion.

There are laws against blasphemy in every country and there are several instances of applying these laws. Even during the cases of blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) in the past, laws of blasphemy were implemented. When controversial writer Salman Rushdie wrote ‘Satanic Verses’, many non-Muslim countries banned it even before Penguin could release this ill-intended book in several countries. India, a country with non-Muslim majority too banned it when it was about to be published in its land. Khushwant Singh, then resident editor of Penguin Publications in India, who is known for his ‘Gossip Sweet and Sour’ columns also had recommended banning this book in India.

It is very important for any country to utilise the available laws against blasphemy and to develop strong laws against blasphemy as it is a very counter-productive to the society and countries. There is no contribution towards knowledge, logic, literature or progressive thinking in this kind of blasphemous works. The sole intention of it is to provoke people and to create chaos in the society.

Why do They Make Mockery?

Question arises why these people often resort to blasphemy of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) in particular? God forbid, every time in this kind of blasphemous works Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is portrayed as a molester, a womaniser, an oppressor, a terrorist and so on. Similar is the case with the infamous Danish cartoons, which had caused global uproar a few years ago.

Probably, a SWOT analysis of the Muslim community to ascertain the reason behind this blasphemy will lead us to some better conclusions.

Strengths of Muslims

Without exaggeration, some of strengths which Muslim community possesses are seldom there in any other communities of the world. One of the strength is that they have the only book of guidance which cannot be distorted. It’s a fact that none of the divine Scriptures which came before Quran is available today in a secured and undistorted form. You will not find any book which is an accurate book of guidance as Quran. It is also protected in the hearts of hundreds of thousands of people around the world, who have committed complete Quran into their memory, as Quran says: “We have certainly sent down the dhikr (Quran) and we will surely guard it” (15: 9).

quranThis is a biggest strength of Muslims because through this they always remain rightly guided. No one can say anything against Quran based on knowledge and logic. Probably this is one of the reasons, trouble mongers resort to the cowardice act of mockery of the Prophet (pbuh), as Quran came through him (pbuh) in the form of revelation.

Another strength of Muslim community is the ‘Shariah’ - the rules and regulations of Islam developed on the basis of Quran and traditions of Prophet Mohammad (pbuh). Major part of the Quran is all about rules and regulations for human life. It gives broader and illustrative rules and regulations about a believer’s private life, social life, transactions, social fabric, marriages, divorce, and distribution of assets and so on. Moreover, for every small act and every aspect of life there is detailed guidance and illustration in Islam. You will not find this kind of detailed rules and regulations in any religion. Due to this fact, constitutions of a few non-Muslim countries too allow their Muslim population to follow their own personal-laws based on Shariah. Whereas many non-Muslim communities develop their own rules and regulations for marriage, divorce and other civil rights which undergoes amendments and changes whenever they see flaws in it. But in Islam there are set of Quranic rules and regulations which are constant and unchangeable.

Resurgence of Islam

It is an obvious truth that despite the global media’s organised propaganda against Islam, there is a great deal of curiosity and attraction towards Islam across the world. Even though hundreds of anti-Islamic books are hitting the market every day and huge activities are underway to wage propaganda war against Islam throughout the world, today Islam has emerged as the biggest “practiced religion” and “fastest growing faith” in the world.

It is worth mentioning here that there were efforts to abolish the religious identity of Muslims several times in history in many countries. However, it so happened that there was religious awakening and resurgence after sometime. We may see such examples in Russia and its adjacent countries which were once part of USSR, and European countries like Bosnia, Turkey and elsewhere. Today, hundreds of thousands of Muslim gather for Eid Prayers in Moscow, where Muslim identity was once eliminated. Hundreds of thousands of peaceful demonstrators turned up in recent protest in Turkey against blasphemy of the Prophet (pbuh). This was a proof for the allegiance of people towards Islam.

At the time of Ottoman Empire, Turks had a close connection with Arabic language. However, the successive regime of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, not only banished Arabic language, but also tried to eliminate Islamic identity. In spite of this, people of Modern Turkey are turning towards Islam in great number and showing keen interest in practice of religion.

In fact, global Muslims do not have an organised way of missionary activities to convey the message of Islam compared to missionary activities of Christians and other ideologies. There are a few individual ‘Dayees’ (preachers) performing their mission here and there. However, Islam is considered as the fasted growing religion in most of the non-Muslim majority countries. In the West during the last fifty years, the growth of Muslim population is more than 200%. Disturbed by this development, some of the western countries are thinking of banning minarets of the masjids and prohibiting niqab (veil) and hijab in order to discourage the spread of Islam.

On the other hand a considerable number of great personalities and celebrities from different fields are constantly coming to the fold of Islam. British singer, songwriter and Pop icon Cat Stevens, at the zenith of his stardom became a Muslim and is now known as Yousuf Islam, a popular Muslim activist. British journalist and war-correspondent Yvonne Ridley, best known for her capture by the Taliban in the battlefield of Afghanistan, accepted Islam after reading Quran, and now actively spreading her thoughts about Islam. Canadian scholar of linguistics Dr Thomas Ballantine Irving, not only accepted Islam, but also translated the noble Quran. Eminent French medical scientist Dr. Maurice Bucaille, who is known for his masterpiece “The Bible, The Qur'an and Science”, accepted Islam and proved the divinity of Quran through modern science. These are mere a few well-known names, among hundreds of prominent personalities who came to the fold of Islam in recent years.

Inspiring Personality

The personality of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) itself is a strength of Muslims. Western scholar Michel H. Hart’s masterpiece ‘The 100: A Ranking of the Most Influential Persons in History’, a book written after extensive unbiased research, declares Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) as the most influential personality in the history. Sir Isaac Newton and Jesus Christ (pbuh) are placed in the second and third position respectively in his book. Newton was born in the 17th century AD while Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was born in the 7th century AD. According to Michal H. Hart, from 7th century to 17th century AD you will not find anyone who is as influential as Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Interestingly the researcher Michal H. Hart was neither a follower of Prophet (pbuh) nor a Muslim.

The history of Arabia and Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is indeed astonishing. In the 7th century AD there were two super powers - the Roman Empire and the Persian Empire. Between these two mighty empires was the resource-less Arabian Peninsula, where there were only nomads, camels and less-educated people.

The same atmosphere was prevailing when Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was born. His life was full of challenges - born as an orphan, lost two of his care takers grandfather and uncle at an early age. He did not undergo any formal education and remained an illiterate. Until he was 40-year-old, lived like an ordinary man. He did not perform any extraordinary things in the society. However, he commanded great respect in Makah through his character, and was kwon among people as “the truthful” and “the honest”.

the100But things changed after his 40th year, when he became a Prophet: He started conveying an inspiring message and people became his followers in the society. Initially, nomads and uneducated people began to emerge as leaders through this message. Within 50 years, his message spread to a large part of the world. After another 100 years it reached much larger part of the world and within short span of time Islam emerged as a global super power.

History bears testimony that Muslim rulers conquered the mighty Roman and Persian empires. It is an astonishing history and it appears to be a legend. Even today we can see the remains of Roman Empire in Syria’s Palmyra, which was one of the capitals of Roman Empire. Istanbul and Baghdad - two great cities of Islamic civilisation - also were capitals of the same Roman Empire.

The influential personality of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) played a major role in the spread of Islam. We can see the influence of his personality even today. Anyone who studies his history derives lots of influence from it. That is the very reason the enemies of Islam try to target the Prophet (pbuh) and malign his image in every possible way. In Islamic terminology this is called ‘Fitnah’, an act of spreading chaos on the earth. The Fitnah of intentional and organised blasphemy deserve a severe punishment.

According to Quran, “Fitnah (Creating Chaos on the earth) is worse than committing a murder,” (2:191). Because, Fitnah leads to the loss of innocent lives and destruction of prosperities. The result of the latest Fitnah of blashphemy against the Prophet (pbuh) was also the same: A country lost eight jetliners, lost an Ambassador in Libya, many diplomats were killed, a large number of innocent people lost their lives in many courtiers and chaos erupted around the world. A legal action against the person who initiated the mockery in the initial stage, would have been averted all these chaos!

Honour of the Prophet (pbuh) Protected

The honour of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), has been protected through various means. Quran says that Allah Himself will protect the honour of His Prophet. He also protects the honor through Muslim community and through Islamic Sharia.

Allah says in Quran, “I am sufficient for you against the people who do mockery” (15: 95). Through this verse Allah has given a guarantee that He will protect the honor of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). In another verse Allah says “And we have raised high for you (Muhammad) your repute” (94: 4). Before the birth of Prophet (pbuh), “Muhammad” was an unknown name. Today we can see millions of people identify themselves with the name ‘Muhammad’ all over the world. Every time when the mu’addin (prayer caller at masjid) says the adaan (prayer call) in the microphone saying, “I bear witness that Muhammad (pbuh) is the messenger of Allah”, the name of the Prophet (pbuh) raises high in the sky. There is no minute in a day when this announcement is not proclaimed since time varies from country to country.

Quran exhorts the Muslim community that Prophet (pbuh) should be more dearer to them than any other things in their life. “Say: If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your relatives, the wealth that you have gained, the commerce in which you fear a decline, and the dwellings in which you delight ... are dearer to you than Allah and His Messenger, and striving hard and fighting in His Cause, then wait until Allah brings about His Decision (torment)” (9: 24). Accordingly for a true Muslim, the most dearest thing in his/her life is love towards Allah, His Prophet (pbuh) and striving in the way of Allah.

Shariah, the rules and regulations of Islam, also protects the honour of Prophet (pbuh). It prescribes capital punishment for blasphemy. This can be seen during the conquest of Makkah, when the Prophet (pbuh) forgave all unbelievers of the conquered land including his blood thirsty enemies. He forgave staunch enemies of Islam like Abu Sufiyan and made a declaration that whoever takes shelter in the house of Abu Sufiyan will be forgiven. Ikrima, another staunch enemy of Islam too approached Prophet (pbuh) seeking asylum. When he was arriving from distance Prophet (pbuh) said: “Ikrima is coming towards us as a believer and migrant, hence do not abuse his father”. In spite of the fact that Ikrima’s father Abu Jahal was the bitterest enemy of Islam, the Prophet (pbuh) did not let anyone abuse him. He forgave every individual and declared: “there will be no revenge on any of you today.” However, he did not forgive four individuals who committed blasphemy and they were executed.

How to React?

If enemies of Islam utilize media to attack Islam, the best refutation could be through media itself. There are various media through which we may refute in an effective way. Though peaceful and timely demonstrations also sometime convey the message to the masses and governments to take necessary action, killing of the innocent people in the pretext of protest is not permissible in Islam, which strictly prohibits killing of innocent people, destroying public properties or cutting the trees even during wars. Even in their reaction and protest, Muslims should carry a message that through they are upset and angry they prove to be peace-loving people and always protect values promulgated by the final Prophet (pbuh).

protest

Islam strictly prohibits killing of innocent people, destroying public properties or cutting the trees even during wars.

There are two things that Muslims can do in order to respond to the blasphemy. One of them is swift reaction which is spontaneous. The second one is well-thought out pro-action. Muslim community is good at reaction but seldom we see any efforts done by Muslims which can be considered as pro-action.

Reminding Muslims about the proactive approach Qur’an says, “So they who have believed in him (Prophet), honored him, supported him and followed the light which was sent down with him are the victorious’ (7: 157).

Therefore Muslim community should be proactive by taking care of the four important responsibilities that they constantly have towards Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), which is believing in him, respecting him, helping him and following him.

Helping the Prophet (pubh) is nothing but spreading the message which he had conveyed. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was the last Prophet and after him prophet hood is terminated. But the prophetic mission, which is transferred to his followers, is not terminated. Today every fourth person in the world is a Muslim. Among them some are living peacefully in peaceful countries, where as some are living with difficulties and challenges, deprived of their freedom and rights. It is the responsibility of every individual Muslims particularly those who are living in peaceful societies to convey the message of Islam to maximum people so that the peace reaches the entire world.

Qur’an says, “Their intention is to extinguish Allah's Light (by blowing) with their mouths: But Allah will complete (the revelation of) His Light, even though the Unbelievers may detest (it). It is He Who has sent His Apostle with Guidance and the Religion of Truth, that he may proclaim it over all religion, even though the Pagans may detest (it)” (61: 8,9).

Surly, Islam has all the qualities and requisites to become a predominant faith, if supported by plan and efforts by Muslim community as Quran says, “Man will not get anything other than what he strives for and you will surely see the fruit of your striving” (53: 39,40).

As Covid 19 has created havoc all rounds, the rulers of certain countries are using it to further intensify their set agendas. The democratic freedoms are being curtailed in certain forms, the reaction to which has come in America in the form of a campaign, which is opposing “stifling” cultural climate that is imposing “ideological conformity” and weakening “norms of open debate and toleration of differences”. In India similar intimidations have been intensified. In addition the occasion has been used by the sectarian forces first to link the spread of Corona to Muslim community and now in the name of reducing the burden of curriculum certain chapters on core concepts related to Indian nationalism are being deleted from the text books.

It has been reported that chapters on federalism, citizenship, nationalism, secularism, Human Rights, Legal Aid and Local Self Government and the like are being dropped. Education has been an important area for communal forces and they constantly keep saying that leftists have dominated the curriculum content, it suffers from the impact of Macaulay, Marx and Mohammad and so needs to be Indianized. The first such attempt was done when BJP came to power in 1998 as NDA and had Murli Manohar Joshi as the MHRD minister. He brought the changes which were termed as ‘saffronization of education’. Their focus is more on social science. Some of the highlights of this were introduction of subjects like Astrology and Paurohitya, and chapters defending caste system, nationalism of the type of Hitler was praised.

With defeat of NDA in 2004, the UPA did try to rectify some of these distortions. Again after 2014 the RSS affiliates working in the area of education have been active, interacting with MHRD officials to impress upon them the need to change the curriculum matching with their Hindu nationalist agenda. Its ‘Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas’ has been asking for removal of English, Urdu words in the texts. It has asked for removal of thoughts of Rabindranath Tagore on Nationalism, extracts of autobiography of M F Husain, references to benevolence of Muslim rulers, references to BJP being Hindu party, apology of Dr. Manmohan Singh for anti Sikh pogrom of 1984, the reference to killings of Gujarat carnage in 2002 among others. This they call as Bhartiykaran of syllabus.

As RSS is a multithreaded hydra one of its pracharak Dinanath Batra has set up ‘Shiksha Bachao Abhiyan Samiti’ which has been pressurizing various publishers to drop the books which are not conforming to their ideology. One recalls their pressuring withdrawal of Wendy Doniger’s ‘The Hindus’, as it does present the ancient India through the concerns of dalits and women. Mr. Batra has already come out with a set of nine books for school curriculum, giving the RSS view of the past and RSS understanding of social sciences. These have already been translated into Gujarati and thousands of the sets of these books are being used in Gujarat Schools.

The present step of deleting parts of curriculum which gives the basics of Indian Nationalism, secularism and human rights is a further step in the same direction. These are the topics which have made the Hindu nationalists uncomfortable during last few years. They have been defaming secularism. They removed it from the preamble of Indian constitution, when they put out an ad on the eve of Republic day in 2015. From last few decades since the Ram Temple movement was brought up, simultaneously the secular ethos of India’s freedom movement and secular values of Indian constitution have been constantly criticized. Many an RSS ideologues and BJP leaders have been asking for change of Indian Constitution for this very reason.

Secularism is part of the concept of Indian nationalism. In the name of religious nationalism, sectarian divisive nationalism they have been attacking various student leaders in particular. When we study Nationalism, the very genesis of Indian nationalism tells us the plurality of our freedom movement with its anti colonial roots. The struggle was for Indian nationalism and so the Muslims and Hindu communalists kept aloof from this great struggle against colonial masters, it was this struggle which built the Indian nation with all its diversity.

Similarly as we have equal rights as citizens the chapters on citizenship are being dropped. Federalism has been the core part of India’s administrative and political structure. As the dictatorial tendencies are becoming stronger, federalism is bound to suffer and that explains the dropping of this subject. Democracy is decentralization of power. Power reaching the lowermost part of the system, the villages and average citizens. This got reflected in Local self Government. The power is distributed among villages, cities, state and center. By removing chapters on federalism and local self government, the indications of the ideology of ruling party are on display.

While we are not dealing with all the portents of the planned omissions, one more aspect that related to dropping of chapter on Human rights needs our attention. The concept of Human rights and dignity are interlinked. This concept of Human rights also has international ramifications. India is signatory to many an UN covenants related to Human rights. The indications are clear that now rights will be for the few elite and ‘duties’ for the large deprived sections will be put on the forefront.

In a way this incidental ‘Corona gifted opportunity’ to the ruling Government is being fully used to enhance the agenda of ruling party in the arena of Educational Curriculum. The part of curriculum with which the ruling party is uncomfortable is being removed. This act of omission does supplement their other acts of commission in changing the shape of educational curriculum, which are reflected in RSS affiliates’ suggestions to MHRD regarding Bhartiyakaran of contents of syllabus. As per this the things like regarding the great epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata as History, the things like India having all the stem cell technology, plastic surgery, aviation science etc. will have a place in the changes planned by communal forces!

They say ‘history repeats itself first as a tragedy and then as a farce’. In case of India, communal violence not only keeps repeating itself, the pattern of the tragedy keeps changing every next time. Some features of the violence are constant, but they are under the wraps mostly. The same can be said about the Delhi violence (February 2020). The interpretations, the causative factors are very discernible, but those who are generally the perpetrators have a knack of shifting the blame on the victim community or those who stand for the victims.

As the carnage began presumably in the aftermath of statement of Kapil Mishra of BJP, which was given in front of a top police official, in which he threatened to get the roads emptied. The roots of violence were sown earlier. The interpretations given by the Hindu Nationalist camp is that the riot is due to the changing demographic profile of the area with Muslims increasing in number in those areas, and coming up of Shaheen Bagh which was presented was like ‘Mini Pakistan’. As per them the policies of BJP in matters of triple talaq, Article 370 and CAA, NPR, NRC has unnerved the ‘radical’ elements and so this violence.

As such before coming to the observations of the activists and scholars of communal violence in India, we can in brief say that violence, in which nearly 46 people have died, include one from police and another from intelligence. Majority victims are Muslims. The violence started right under the nose of the police and the ruling party. From the videos and other eye accounts, police not only looked the other way around, at places it assisted those attacking the innocent victims and burning and looting selective shops. Home minister, Amit Shah, was nowhere on the scene. For first three days the rioters had free run. After the paramilitary force was brought in; the violence simmered and slowly reduced in intensity. The state AAP Government, which in a way is the byproduct of RSS supported Anna Hazare movement, was busy reading Hanuman Chalisa and praying at Rajghat with eyes closed to the mayhem going in parts of Delhi.

Communal violence is the sore point of Indian society. It did begin during colonial period due to British policy of ‘Divide and Rule’. At root cause was the communal view of looking at history and pro active British acts to sow the seeds of Hindu-Muslim divide. At other level the administrative and police the British were fairly neutral. On one hand was the national movement, uniting the people and creating and strengthening the fraternal feeling among all Indians. On the other were Muslim Communalists (Muslim League) and Hindu Communalists (Hindu Mahasabha, RSS) who assisted the British goal of ‘divide and rule’ promoting hatred between the communities. After partition the first major change was the change in attitude of police and administration which started tilting against Muslims. Major studies by Dr. Asghar Ali Engineer, Paul Brass and Omar Khalidi demonstrated that anti Muslim bias is discernible in during and after the riots.

Now the partisan role of police has been visible all through. Sri Krishna Commission report brought forth this fact; as did the research of the Ex DIG of UP police Dr. V.N.Rai. Dr. Rai’s studies also concluded that no communal violence can go on beyond 24 hours unless state administration is complicit in the carnage. In one of the violence, investigation of which was done by concerned Citizen’s team (Dhule, 2013) this author observed that police itself went on to undertake the rampage against Muslims and Muslim properties.

General observation about riots is that violence sounds to be spontaneous, as the Home Minister is pointing out, but as such it is well planned act. Again the violence is orchestrated in such a way that it seems Muslims have begun the riots. Who casts the First stone? To this scholars point out that the carnage is so organized that the encircled community is forced to throw the first stone. At places the pretext is made that ‘they’ (minorities) have thrown the first stone.

The pretexts against minorities are propagated, in Gujarat violence Godhra train burning, in Kandhamal the murder of Swami Laxamannand and now Shaheen bagh! The Hindu Muslim violence began as riots. But it is no more a riot, two sides are not involved. It is plain and simple anti Minority violence, in which some from the majority are also the victims.

This violence is possible as the ‘Hate against this minority’ is now more or less structural. The deeper Hate against Muslims and partly against Christians; has been cultivated since long and Hindu nationalist politics, right from its Shakhas to the social media have been put to use for spreading Hatred. The prevalent deeper hate has been supplanted this time by multiple utterances from BJP leaders, Modi (Can be recognized by clothes), Shah (press EVM machine button so hard that current is felt in Shaheen Bagh), Anurag Thakur (Goli (bullet) Maro) Yogi Aditya Nath (If Boli (Words)Do not work Goli will) and Parvesh Varma (They will be out to rape).

The incidental observation of the whole tragedy is the coming to surface of true colors of AAP, which not only kept mum as the carnage was peaking but also went on to praise the role of police in the whole episode. With Delhi carnage “Goli Maro” seems to be becoming the central slogan of Hindu nationalists. Delhi’s this violence has been the first one in which those getting killed are more due to bullets than by swords or knifes! Leader’s slogans do not go in vain! Courts the protectors of our Constitution seem to be of little help as if one of them like Murlidhar Rao gives the verdict to file against hate mongers, he is immediately transferred.

And lastly let’s recall the academic study of Yale University. It concludes; BJP gains in electoral strength after every riot’. In India the grip of communalism is increasing frighteningly. Efforts are needed to combat Hate and Hate mongers.

This January 2020, it is thirty years since the Kashmiri Pundits’ exodus from the Kashmir valley took place. They had suffered grave injustices, violence and humiliation prior to the migration away from the place of their social and cultural roots in Kashmir Valley. The phenomenon of this exodus had been due to the communalization of militancy in Kashmir in the decade of 1980s. While no ruling Government has applied itself enough to ‘solve’ this uprooting of pundits from their roots, there are communal elements who have been aggressively using ‘what about Kashmiri Pundits?’, every time liberal, human rights defenders talk about the plight of Muslim minority in India. This minority is now facing an overall erosion of their citizenship rights.

Time and over again in the aftermath of communal violence in particular, the human rights groups have been trying to put forward the demands for justice and rehabilitation of the victim minority. Instead of being listened to those particularly from Hindu nationalist combine, as a matter of routine shout back, where were you when Kashmiri Pundits were driven away from the Valley? In a way the tragedy being heaped on one minority is being justified in the name of suffering of Pundits and in the process violence is being normalized. This sounds as if two wrongs make a right, as if the suffering Muslim minority or those who are trying to talk in defense of minority rights have been responsible for the pain of Kashmiri Pundits.

During these three, many political formations have come to power, including BJP, Congress, third front and what have you. To begin with when the exodus took place Kashmir was under President’s rule and V. P. Singh Government was in power at the center. This Government had the external support of BJP at that time. Later BJP led NDA came to power for close to six years from 1998, under the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Then from 2014 it is BJP, with Narerda Modi as PM, with BJP brute majority is in power. Other components of NDA are there to enjoy some spoils of power without any say in the policies being pursued by the Government. Modi is having absolute power with Amit Shah occasionally presenting Modi’s viewpoints.

Those blurting, ‘what about Kashmiri Pundits?’ are using it as a mere rhetoric to hide their communal color. The matters of Kashmir are very disturbing and cannot be attributed to be the making of Indian Muslims as it is being projected in an overt and subtle manner. Today, of course the steps taken by the Modi Government, that of abrogation of Article 370, abolition of clause 35 A, downgrading the status of Kashmir from a state to union territory have created a situation where the return of Kashmiri Pundits may have become more difficult, as the local atmosphere is more stifling and the leaders with democratic potential have been slapped with Public Safety Act, where they can be interned for long time without any answerability to the Courts. The internet had been suspended, communication being stifled in an atmosphere where democratic freedoms are curtailed which makes solution of any problem more difficult.

Kashmir has been a vexed issue where the suppression of the clause of autonomy, leading to alienation led to rise of militancy. This was duly supported by Pakistan. The entry of Al Qaeda elements, who having played their role against Russian army in 1980s entered into Kashmir and communalized the situation in Kashmir. The initial Kashmir militancy was on the grounds of Kashmiriyat. Kashmiriyat is not Islam, it is synthesis of teachings of Buddha, values of Vedant and preaching’s of Sufi Islam. The tormenting of Kashmiri Pundits begins with these elements entering Kashmir.

Also the pundits, who have been the integral part of Kashmir Valley, were urged upon by Goodwill mission to stay on, with local Muslims promising to counter the anti Pundit atmosphere. Jagmohan, the Governor, who later became a minister in NDA Government, instead of providing security to the Pundits thought, is fit to provide facilities for their mass migration. He could have intensified counter militancy and protected the vulnerable Pundit community. Why this was not done?

Today, ‘What about Kashmiri Pundits?’ needs to be given a serious thought away from the blame game or using it as a hammer to beat the ‘Muslims of India’ or human rights defenders? The previous NDA regime (2014) had thought of setting up enclosures of Pundits in the Valley. Is that a solution? Solution lies in giving justice to them. There is a need for judicial commission to identify the culprits and legal measures to reassure the Pundit community. Will they like to return if the high handed stifling atmosphere, with large number of military being present in the area? The cultural and religious spaces of Pundits need to be revived and Kashmiryat has to be made the base of any reconciliation process.

Surely, the Al Qaeda type elements do not represent the alienation of local Kashmiris, who need to be drawn into the process of dialogue for a peaceful Kashmir, which is the best guarantee for progress in this ex-state, now a Union territory. Communal amity, the hallmark of Kashmir cannot be brought in by changing the demographic composition by settling outsiders in the Valley. A true introspection is needed for this troubled area. Democracy is the only path for solving the emigration of Pundits and also of large numbers of Muslims, who also had to leave the valley due to the intimidating militancy and presence of armed forces in large numbers. One recalls Times of India report of 5th February 1992 which states that militants killed 1585 people from January 1990 to October 1992 out of which 982 were Muslims and 218 Hindus.

We have been taking a path where democratic norms are being stifled, and the promises of autonomy which were part of treaty of accession being ignored. Can it solve the problem of Pundits?
