Dubai, Feb 4: Mr. Thumbay Moideen, the Founder President of the UAE-based Thumbay Group has been featured on the cover of ‘Forbes Middle East’, one of the top finance and business magazines in the Middle East region. The cover story, titled “Healthy Choice” traces Mr. Thumbay Moideen’s business journey in the UAE starting from setting up the Gulf Medical University (GMU) in Ajman, to emerging as a prominent name in healthcare and medical education by establishing the leading network of academic hospitals in the country and making GMU one of the highest-in-demand private medical universities in the region.

The cover story is a detailed account of how Mr. Moideen’s business acumen and confidence leads GMU and the Thumbay network of hospitals on the continuous path of growth and excellence. Forbes Middle East estimates his fortunes at $1.8 billion.

According to the article, GMU gets around 6000 student applications for just around 270 spots, every year. Since 2003, over 2000 students have graduated from GMU and presently, the student body is made up of 36% Arabs, 32% Asians and 22% Africans and the rest from Europe and Asia. It also has 162 faculty members from 22 countries, says the article. 22% of GMU graduates are admitted to US medical schools for further training. “GMU is part of a network of four pioneering teaching hospitals that now train 19% of doctors in the country and treat nearly 1,800 patients a day,” it says.

Mr. Moideen’s foray into healthcare, says the article, started with the setting up of a 200-bed teaching hospital in Ajman, in 2002. Two 60-bed hospitals, one each in Fujairah and Sharjah in 2011, and a 150-bed hospital in Dubai in 2015 followed. The Thumbay Hospital network reached several notches higher with the prestigious JCI accreditation it received in 2013.

The article also talks about Thumbay Group’s future plans such as the upcoming medical school project in Ghana, which is expected to open by 2017. Mentioning the opening of Thumbay Hospital in Hyderabad – India last year, the article goes on to say that Mr. Moideen plans to build hospitals in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Mumbai and Bengaluru, next year. “He’s become a billionaire with plans to expand elsewhere in the Gulf and Africa,” it says. The article also features Mr. Akbar Moideen Thumbay, his elder son who manages the Healthcare Division of the Group as its Vice-President, while his younger son Mr. Akram Moideen Thumbay is the Director Operations of the Construction & Renovation Division.

From humble beginnings in 1998 when Mr. Thumbay Moideen migrated to the UAE from India, almost two decades since its inception, today, the Thumbay Group under his Presidency has grown into an international business conglomerate headquartered at DIFC-Dubai. Not only has he made a mark as a pioneer in his flagship businesses: education, healthcare and research, but he has also diversified his business across 13 different sectors and has established global presence. With the completion of the ongoing projects, the Group will employ 6000 people in the next two years, which will reach 15,000 employees by the end of 2020.

Chikkamagaluru, Feb 21: Alleged Bharatiya Janata Party supporters threw stones at Amulya Leona’s father’s house at Gullagadde near Koppa on Thursday night, after she was charged for making objectionable remarks at a public programme in Bengaluru.

Amulya Leona’s father Wazi said that the incident, which left window panes and doors damaged, took place at around 7.30 p.m. “They are all BJP supporters. They were in a group. I have complained to the police with the names of a few who led the group,” he said.

Three policemen have been deployed at his house since Thursday night.

Amulya Leona, a B.A. student, was charged with sedition after she raised pro-Pakistan slogans at a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Bengaluru.

Mr. Wazi, who owns a two-acre areca plantation and runs a poultry farm, said he condemned the statement made by his daughter and he would not make any attempts to get her bail. “Let the law take its course. I cannot approve of her statement,” he said.

He said he had cautioned his daughter against getting involved in protests. “I told her to complete studies first and later she could fight for poor people. But what she said yesterday is not acceptable. I don’t know what made her so. I hope a probe would bring out who prompted her to make such statements,” he said.

Mr. Wazi said he has been politically active for several years, and had earlier worked for former education minister H.G. Govinde Gowda. He then shifted to the BJP and worked in support of D.N. Jeevaraj, who represented Sringeri constituency last time, and current Udupi-Chickmagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje. “I have worked for the BJP in the past. As Govinde Gowda’s son contested on JD(S) ticket for Sringeri seat, I supported him”, he said.

Meanwhile, a video clip that went viral on Thursday night showed a group of Bajrang Dal activists compelling Mr. Wazi to shout ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’. “I have no hesitation in raising ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ slogans,” said Mr. Wazi, adding that his statement was taken forcibly. “I am a patriot. Many writers, activists and politicians have come to my place over the years,” he said.

Mangaluru, Jan 18: Congress leader Siddaramaiah targeted Union Home Minister Amit Shah soon after he arrived in Bengaluru on Saturday, demanding his answers on various questions pertaining to the state.

In a slew of tweets under the #AnswerMadiShah banner, Siddaramaiah raised issues ranging from the August 2019 floods to the recent police shootout in Mangaluru that killed two people during an anti-CAA protest.

On December 19, Jaleel (45) and Nausheen (24) were killed after the police opened fire during a protest against the CAA.

“Two innocent victims were killed in Mangaluru in what public opinion says that it is a fake encounter. You are the Home Minister of the country. Don't you think adequate investigation has to take place when people cry foul about the incident?” Siddaramaiah asked.

He further asked: “Mr Amit Shah, before investing time to brainwash people to accept your divisive policies, why don't you visit flood-affected areas again and assess if the Central government funds  are sufficient or not?”

The Congress leader pointed out that Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa had claimed that Karnataka suffered losses of over Rs 35,000 crore due to the floods. “But your aid is just Rs 1,870 crore. When are you planning to give the remaining? Will there be any funds left after the implementation of CAA, NPR & NRC?” he added.

The former chief minister brought up the Mahadayi river water sharing dispute. It may be recalled that Shah, in the run-up to the Karnataka Assembly elections in 2018, had promised a resolution to the dispute within six months if BJP was voted to power in the state.

“Mr. Amit Shah, your colleagues give contradictory statements on the initiation of Mahadayi project. Why is there a change in stance after elections? What is your stand on the issue,” Siddaramaiah asked.
