Udupi: VHP, Bajrang Dal activists kill BJP worker for transporting cows

Udupi, Aug 18: In a shocking incident, a group of miscreants belonging to Vishva Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal beat up a youth to death for involving in illegal cow transportation near Hebri village in Karkala taluk of Udupi district last night.

praveenThe miscreants came to know that the ill-fated cow trafficker was also an activist of Bhartiya Janata Party only after the attack.

The BJP activist Praveen Poojary (29), a resident of Kenjur and cattle trader by profession, breathed his last in a hospital, hours after the attack. His aide Akshay Devadiga (22), who was also injured in the attack, is undergoing treatment at a hospital.

The incident occurred at around 7:30 p.m. when Praveen Poojary was loading three cows into a Tata Ace for transportation at Kadike in Santhekatte near Hebri village. Akshay Devadiga was also present.

On receiving the information, nearly 30 VHP and Bajrang Dal activists surrounded the vehicle and attacked Poojary with lethal weapons. Devadiga, who came to his recue, was also assaulted brutally by the miscreants.

The assailants left the spot only after Poojary revealed that he was a BJP worker and had campaigned for the saffron party during last Lok Sabha elections. Though Poojary and Devadiga were rushed to a hospital by local residents, the former breathed his last without responding to any treatment.

Udupi SP KP Balakrishna confirmed to Coastaldigest.com that 18 persons have been arrested for their involvement in the attack. It is learnt that he attack was led by Arvind Sherigar, a VHP member, who runs a petrol bunk.

The Udupi district unit of BJP, which always encouraged the violent acts so of called gau rakshaks, is now in a dilemma as they have killed their own man.

The incident comes days after the Union Home Ministry had cracked the whip on cow vigilantism, asking all states not to tolerate anyone taking law into their hands in the name of protecting cow and to take prompt action against such offenders.

The Home Ministry advisory had come two days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi attacked cow vigilantes and asked people to beware of these 'fake' protectors trying to divide the society and the country.

He made these comments after his government and BJP came under attack over incidents of violence against Dalits and Muslims by cow vigilantes in various states including Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.

Hindus are spread all around the world. You name a country, they are there. But, do they dare to talk about GauMatha in any country other than India? All their dramas are limited to Indian boundaries. Bahar Dum Nahin nikaltha Hain.

This proves that Bajrang Dal, VHP members or other gau rakshaks are not anti-Muslims. they are just protecting the cows. But attacking these helpless pawns not enough. Attack the real anti-national butchers and eliminate them.

Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 12: At least 66 children have ended their lives in Kerala since the Covid-19 lockdown began on March 25 with youngsters facing stress unable to bear the unprecedented situation where schools are shut and friends are out of reach to share their woes.

According to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, there has been an increasing instance of suicidal tendencies among children in the state due to various reasons, including parents scolding them over mobile phone use and failure to attend online classes.

This has prompted the government to launch a teleconsultation facility for children facing stress and also cautioning parents against hurting their sentiments while being concerned about welfare of their wards. It has also ordered a study into the issue. "Among the children an increasing instance of suicidal tendency is being witnessed which will become an extremely serious social issue.

Since March 25, when the national lockdown was imposed, 66 children, below 18 years of age, have ended their lives due to various reasons", Vijayan said. A mother scolding her child for not attending the ongoing online classes, or a parent questioning a child for downloading a sleazy video on the smartphone or the constant rift between the parents were among the reasons which triggered the suicidal tendency, he said on Saturday.

As the schools have not yet re-opened due to the lockdown, the children are unable to meet their friends and share their problems. Vijayan said though the parents were intervening keeping in mind their child's welfare, it was essential to ensure that the young minds were not hurt in the process. To helpthe children facing issues relating to mental pressures, 'Chiri'atele-counselling initiative has been started by the government under its Our Responsibility to Children Programme (ORC), a planned community intervention that connects with people between the age of 12-18 years. The state health department has also launched "Ottakalla Oppamundu" (You are not alone,we are with you) programmeto help children facing any kind of mental distress and to prevent the suicidal tendencies among them.

Health Minister K K Shailaja said under the psychosocial support assistance, her department has so far reached out to 68,814 children and 10,890 children have been given counselling. The changes in the behaviour of their children should be noted by the family members and if they find something amiss, the district psychosocial help desk should be informed, she said. A 15-member team of Students Police Cadets will be constituted in each of the 14 districts to help the children needing any assistance, police sources said. Education should not be a competition, but a means to gain knowledge, Vijayan said.

A society's future lies with the children and it is the duty of the society and the government to ensure their physical and mental well being. Taking a serious view of the situation, the state government has constituteda committee headed byFire and Rescue Services DGP R Sreelekha to conduct a study on child suicides in the state. The aim of the ORC was also to create a multi collaborative platform for government and professional agencies, parents and teachers to equip youth with appropriate know-how to face challenges, officials said.

Bengaluru, Jul 1: The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert and forecasted heavy rains for three coastal districts and 12 more in the south interior Karnataka region, an official said on Tuesday afternoon.

"Thunderstorm with lightning is likely to occur at isolated places over south interior Karnataka from Tuesday to Wednesday," said a Met official.

For Bengaluru city, the Met department has forecast a generally cloudy sky with light rain for the next three days.

Coastal Karnataka -- Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts have been issued a yellow alert for the next two days with thundershowers and gusty winds.

Winds blowing at speed of 40-50 km per hour are expected on the coast and the Met department warned fishermen against venturing into the sea.

Meanwhile, heavy showers on Sunday night in Vijayapura district gave rise to flash floods in the Doni river and Sogali stream.

An overflowing Doni river submerged the Talikote - Hadaginal bridge, a remnant from the colonial era, and also submerged some agricultural lands. Only recently, these agricultural lands were sown with toor dal plants.

Similarly, many SSLC students also struggled to cross the bridge to reach their examination centres on Monday.

Many houses were also flooded due to the rainfall at Nalatwad and Talikote taluk. Muddebihal, Basavana Bagewadi and Sindagi taluks also witnessed heavy rainfall.

A 40-year-old farmer from Dharwad district was washed away in the Tuppari Halla stream, which is prone to flood during the monsoon season.

Likewise, a truck carrying cotton also got washed away in a stream in Yadgir district.

"There is an offshore trough and a circulation, because of which rain will continue in the coastal area. Only Malnad has not got sufficient rain this year. Probably after two days, Malnad may get some rains," Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) Director Srinivas Reddy said. Otherwise, entire state got normal rainfall, said Reddy, though it is not active over Malnad.
