Mangaluru, Dec 29: Former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy, who is trying to strengthen Janata Dal (Secular) in coastal Karnataka ahead of 2018 assembly polls, has said that his party would organise a rally in Nehru Maidan on January 9 and would highlight how communalism has hit the development of the coastal belt.

Speaking to reporters, the JD(S) state president claimed that the coastal belt, particularly Mangaluru, has the potential to overtake Bengaluru in development. But the “hidden communal agenda” of the Congress and the BJP was a hindrance for the overall development.

Mr. Kumaraswamy alleged that the two national parties have been exploiting and playing with the sentiments of coastal people on the basis of religion. It has disturbed the social harmony in the belt.

Calling the party’s next month’s meet here as “souharda rally” he said that people from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada and Kodagu would attend it. But anti-social elements having hidden agenda are not welcome to it, he said.

Mr. Kumaraswamy claimed that frequent communal related incidents in the coastal belt have created a fear psychosis among the people.

Such incidents being reported in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi has now spread to Uttara Kannada.

Miscreants setting afire the vehicle of Inspector General of Police (Western Range) in Honnavar recently gave scope for suspicion that the government was “stumbling” in maintaining law and order in the State.

He said that the Janata Dal (Secular) is hopeful of opening its account in the coastal belt in the 2018 Assembly elections. He urged the people to give the party a chance for a change.

Mr. Kumaraswamy said that the State government has not implemented the farm loan waiver announced on June 28 to about 23 lakh farmer families. The government has announced that Rs. 8,000 crore farm loan would be waived. “It is a bogus announcement,” he alleged.

Ernakulam, May 25: Miscreants belonging to self-proclaimed Hindutva outfits have demolished a church set erected for the shoot of a Malayalam film at Kalady in Kerala’s Ernakulam district.

The set was erected to shoot the climax scene of the super hero film Minnal Murali, directed by Basil Joseph and starring Tovino Thomas and newcomer actor Femina.

The incident took place on Sunday. Members of the Antharashtra Hindu Parishad claimed that with the help of their sister outfit Antarashtra Bajrang Dal, they demolished the church set, erected on an island on the Periyar river in Kalady.

Hari Palode, the General Secretary of AHP, an organisation founded by Praveen Togadia, boasted on Facebook that they were not used to pleading to anyone, and decided to demolish the church set that was constructed near the Adi Sankaracharya mutt.

“When they built such a structure in front of the Mahadeva shrine in Kalady, we said no. We had also submitted several complaints. We do not have the habit of pleading. We decided to demolish it. Our self respect must be protected at all cost,” AHP’s General Secretary Hari Palode wrote on his Facebook post along with pictures of members demolishing the set.

The post also credited members of the Anrarashtra Bajrang Dal and its Ernakulam Division President Malayatoor Ratheesh for participating in the ‘service work’ of razing the church set.

Mini Biju, member of Kalady Town panchayat confirmed that the film unit had indeed secured permission from the department before going ahead with the construction of the set.

“They had submitted a letter seeking permission to raise a temporary set. This was back in February before construction began. The panchayat committee had approved this request,” Mini said.

Bengaluru, July 23: The Janta Dal (Secular) and Congress that had joined hands together in Karnataka ‘to keep communal forces at bay, have once again turned archrivals. The development comes a year after the collapse of JD(S)-Congress coalition government in the state.

Recently, Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah claimed that the Congress would have won at least 10 seats in the Lok Sabha elections had it not been for the alliance with the JD(S). In response, former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy of the JD(S), who headed the coalition government, blamed the Congress for its many 'conspiracies'.

In a series of tweets on Wednesday, Kumaraswamy said he was prompted by Siddarmaiah's claims to recall what transpired during the coalition government.

"There will never be a future alliance with Congress," Kumaraswamy declared, in a letter to his party colleagues on Wednesday. He claimed that there were many conspiracies on part of Congress, which led to the fall of the coalition government.
