Mangaluru Jan 7: Nearly four days after he was brutally attacked by a gang of communal hatemongers without any provocation at Kottara Chowki in the city, 47-year-old Basheer passed away at a private hospital on Sunday.

Basheer had sustained deep injuries in his head and chest in the attack. Medical sources said that he did not show any sign of  recovery in four days and breathed his last at 8: 10 a.m. today.

Basheer used to run a fast food outlet near Kottara Chowki. On the fateful day he was returning home after closing his outlet in the night. Half way through a gang of four waylaid him and attacked with lethal weapons.

Two ambulance drivers, who saw Basheer lying in a pool of blood, had informed the police before rushing him to a nearby hospital.

The random attack took place hours after another gang of miscreants hacked a youth, Deepak Rao, to death at Katipalla area in the city. All the accused have been arrested in both the cases. According to police, the intension behind the attack was to create tension in the region.

As soon as the news of death began to spread, police tightened the security across city. ADGP Kamal Pant visited the hospital where Basheer passed away. The family members already started preparations for the last rites of Basheer.

Sources said that Basheer's second son Irfan, who landed in Abu Dhabi just three months ago, is expected to reach Mangaluru by evening. His elder son had returned from Middle East two days ago.

January 17,2020

We came on foot, we came on boats, shouting slogans of Azadi.

We stood on roof tops and sat on walls under the burning midday sun,

Listening to the words that we had longed to hear for so long.

Words that had been scripted through the lonely fears of our hearts.

Words that were spoken now with the clarity of courage.

Words that were spoken now with the suppressed strength of pent up anger.

Words that were spoken now with the certainty of belonging to the soil

Which had become one with the dust of our ancestors.

We stood there in the waves of heat

Feeling the surge and press  of countless bodies around us.

Bodies meshed through the odour of sweat

And the shared fear of a common persecution.

And hanging from the roof tops,

And tied to the poles,

And clutched in hands slippery with sweat,

And wrapped round the pillars,

And spreading into our blood,

Were three strips of colour with a wheel of spokes,

Sewn together into the shape of our being.

Woven into the folds of our future and the creases of our past.

Stitched to the seams of the earth, the water, the air and the sky

That belonged to us and to which we belonged.

And we stood there from noon to evening,

We the people of India.

Raising our clenched fists like signposts to the future.

Chanting slogans like a new anthem.

Kin to each other through the ties of community.

Born to live and die

In a nation that was ours to hold on to

And ours to belong to.

Udupi, Apr 24: While several state governments and NGOs are actively working to provide essentials to the needy amid the COVID-19 lockdown, a fisherwoman in Karnataka's Udupi has proved that even a small gesture of help for others can make a huge difference in the society.
A fisherwoman, Sharadakka, distributed rice to 140 needy families in her neighbourhood during the ongoing lockdown. The contribution was made by spending all her life savings amounting to Rs 30,000. The amount was saved by her over a period of time in an effort to build a house for herself.
On Thursday Udupi Deputy Commissioner G. Jagadeesh visited her and ensured help to build her house.
"Spending her meagre earnings, Sharadakka generously filled many empty stomachs amid the nation-wide lockdown, which is a matter of pride," said the Deputy Commissioner.

Bengaluru, Feb 15: The new Karnataka Minister for Forest Anand Singh on Friday said that he is ready for 'change in the portfolio' as opposition parties are leveling charges against Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa for appointing him, despite having 15 cases registered under Forest Act against him.

"If Chief Minister wants to change my portfolio, I am ready," he added.

Speaking to newsmen here, he said that there are 15 cases pending against him. The Legislator from Vijayanagara in Mine rich Ballari district said anyone can go through the Chargesheets and find out whether there are any direct charges against him.
