Cong expels 8 MLAs for cross-voting

Ahmedabad, Aug 9: Cracking a whip on lawmakers who cross-voted in the Rajya Sabha election, the Congress on Wednesday expelled eight MLAs, including former Leader of the Opposition Shankersinh Vaghela, from the party for six years.

Those who have been expelled are Mr. Vaghela’s son Mahendrasinh, C.K. Raolji, Karamshi Patel, Amit Chaudhary, Bhola Gohil, Raghavji Patel and Dharmendrasinh Jadeja, who voted against the party candidate Ahmed Patel, defied the party whip and voted for Balwantsinh, a BJP candidate.

“They were working against the party by voting against the party’s nominee in the Rajya Sabha poll where every legislator was required to follow the party’s whip,” Gujarat Congress president Bharatsinh Solanki told The Hindu.

Legal recourse

The party is likely to pursue legal recourse to ensure that the expelled legislators cannot contest any election for six years.

“There is a Supreme Court judgment under which any legislator or MP who has voted defying the party whip stands disqualified as a legislator or MP and also gets debarred from contesting any election for six years,” Mr. Solanki added.

Centre asks states to allow hospitalised covid patients use smartphones to interact with kin

New Delhi, Aug 2: The Centre has written to all states and Union Territories stating that smartphones and tablet devices should be allowed for hospitalised Covid-19 patients so that they can interact with family and friends through video conferencing, which would provide them psychological support.

Though mobile phones are allowed in hospital wards, the missive was issued following some representation from the kin of patients alleging otherwise.

Director-General of Health Services (DGHS) in the Health Ministry Dr Rajiv Garg in the letter to the principal secretaries of health and medical education of states and Union territories said appropriate protocols for disinfecting devices and allotting timeslots can be developed by the hospital concerned to facilitate contact between patients and their family.

He underlined that administrative and medical teams should be responsive to the psychological needs of patients admitted in Covid-19 wards and ICUs of various hospitals.

"Social connection can calm down patients and also reinforce the psychological support given by the treating team. Please instruct all concerned that they should allow smartphones and tablet devices in patient areas so that the patient can video conference with their family and friends," stated the letter issued on July 29.

"Though mobile phones are allowed in the wards to enable a patient stay in touch with his or her family, we received representations from the patient families from some states stating mobile phones are not being allowed by hospital administrations because of which they were not being able to stay in contact with the patient," said Dr Garg.

19 die in bus-truck collision in Tamil Nadu

Tirupur, Feb 20: Nineteen people died in a collision between a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation bus and a truck near Avinashi town of Tirupur district on Thursday morning here.

The bus was on its way to Ernakulam in Kerala from Bengaluru in Karnataka when the mishap occurred.

Deputy Tehsildar of Avinashi Town informed, "19 people that include 14 men and 5 women, died in the collision between the bus and the truck near Avinashi town."

The bodies have been taken to Tirupur government hospital.
Further details are awaited.

Walking from Delhi to MP, man dies in Agra amid lockdown

Agra, Mar 29: A 39-year-old man, who had walked almost 200 kilometers from Delhi to reach his home in Morena in Madhya Pradesh, collapsed and died in Agra on Saturday.

The man, identified as Ranveer Singh, worked as home delivery boy for a private restaurant in the national capital.

According to police, the victim collapsed near Kailash turning of the national highway-2, after which a local hardware store owner Sanjay Gupta rushed to the victim.

Sikandra station house officer (SHO) Arvind Kumar, said, 'Gupta made the victim lie on a carpet and offered tea and biscuit. The victim complained about chest pain and also called his brother-in-law Arvind Singh over phone to share his health condition. At around 6.30 P.m, the victim passed away and local police was informed. "

Ranveer had left for his native village on Friday morning on foot. It is likely that exhaustion of 200-km walk might have caused chest pain.

The SHO said,"On the entire NH-2 stretch, UP policemen are present with food packets and water for such persons but Ranveer's death is unfortunate. "

After the death, policemen took the victim's body for post-mortem. The autopsy report is yet to be re eased.

According to information available, Ranveer was working in Delhi's Tughlakabad for the past three- years. He is survived by three children including two daughters. He belongs to a family of farmers and was the main bread winner for his family.

His family has been brought to Agra to take the body back to their village for the last rites.
