Kalaburgi, May 23: Congress veteran M Mallikarjun Kharge, who had never lost any election since the beginning of his political career in 1972, is trailing behind BJP candidate Umesh G Jadhav by a huge number of votes in Kalaburagi Lok Sabha constituency.

As per the Election Commission India data, at 1.30 p.m., Mr. Kharge was trailing behind Mr. Jadhav by 70,450 votes. Mr. Kharge had polled in 3,15,414 votes, compared to Mr. Jadhav’s 3,85,864 votes. Mr. Jadhav has been consistently maintaining the lead right from the first round of counting.

Mr. Jadhav came to the counting centre set up at Gulbarga University campus well before the strong rooms, where the loaded Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were kept, opened at 8 a.m. on Thursday. He was present during the opening of the strong rooms in the presence of Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer R. Venkatesh Kumar and continued to be in the counting centre. Mr. Kharge was nowhere to be seen in the counting centre.

Mr. Kharge, who won all the 11 elections in a row – 9 Assembly elections and 2 Lok Sabha elections, began his winning streak in 1972 when he contested from Gurmitkal Assembly constituency. He continued to represent the constituency in the Assembly till 2004. When the Constituency, which was reserved to Scheduled Castes (SCs) later became a General constituency in 2008 Assembly elections, he shifted to neighbouring Chittapur that had just become SC-reserved constituency and won.

After BJP assumed power in the State in that election, he resigned from his Assembly membership to contest the 2009 Lok Sabha elections from Kalaburagi and won with a slim margin of just 13,404 votes against his immediate rival Revu Naik Belamagi of BJP. He served as the Minister of Labour and Employment and Minister of Railway in Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s Cabinet during the second term of United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the Centre.

In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, he again won from Kalaburagi against the same candidate of the same party by improving his winning margin to 74,733 votes. After the Congress suffered a humiliating defeat, he was the party’s Leader in Lok Sabha when National Democratic Alliance led by BJP assumed the power with Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister. He was later made as the Chairman of Public Accounts Committee (PAC) at the Centre in 2018.

In 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he faced a tough fight from BJP’s Umesh Jadhav, whom he had nurtured politically.

Mr. Jadhav, a medical doctor by profession and former employee at Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), was brought to the politics by veteran Congress leader late N. Dharam Singh. Later, he gained the support and confidence of Mr. Kharge as well and got the Congress ticket to contest Assembly elections from Chincholi segment in 2013 and won. In 2018 Assembly elections also, he got Congress ticket and won the polls for the second time from Chincholi.

When he was denied a ministerial berth in the Congress - JD(S) coalition government led by Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, Mr. Jadhav rebelled against the party leadership, especially against Mr. Kharge by unleashing a bitter verbal attack. He alleged that the Congress veteran was suppressing all the leaders in the party to clear the way for his son Priyank Kharge, Social Welfare Minister in the coalition government. He later resigned from his Assembly membership and joined BJP at a public meeting addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kalaburagi on March 6. The BJP rewarded him by offering a ticket to contest the Lok Sabha election against Congress veteran Mr. Kharge from Kalaburagi segment.

The Kalaburagi constituency has witnessed a high-voltage campaign with a host of national and State leaders from both the parties campaigning for their respective candidates and emerged as one of the key Lok Sabha constituencies in 2019 to catch the national attention.

New Delhi, Jan 25: The latest edition of the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary features 26 new Indian English words, including Aadhaar, chawl, dabba, hartal and shaadi.

The 10th edition of the dictionary, which was launched on Friday, has 384 Indian English words and incorporates over 1,000 new words such as chatbot, fake news and microplastic.

The dictionary focuses on language change and its evolution through the years, and has ensured that the language and examples used in the new edition are relevant and up to date with the times, Oxford University Press (OUP) said.

The new edition comes with interactive online support through the Oxford Learner's Dictionaries website and an app. The website includes advanced features such as audio-video tutorials, video walkthroughs, self-study activities and enhanced iWriter and iSpeaker tools.

"This edition has 26 new Indian English words of which 22 figure in the printed dictionary. The other four are in the digital version," said Fathima Dada, Managing Director (Education Division) at OUP.

Some of other new Indian words in the dictionary are auntie (while aunty already figures in the English dictionary, auntie is an Indianism), bus stand, deemed university, FIR, non-veg, redressal, tempo, tube light, veg and videograph.

The four new Indian English words in the online version of the dictionary are current (for electricity), looter, looting and upazila (one of the areas that a district is divided into for administration purposes).

According to OUP, the new edition provides better, more accurate and understandable definitions with examples, usage notes and additional resources to help the learner use the right word in the right context.

"Prevalence and common usage are the main criteria for enlisting new words. We scan the globe for words which are often used by people while speaking English. Then these words go through a rigorous testing process," Dada said.

"As OUP is the custodian of English language globally, these words have to go through its processes," she told PTI.

The Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, she said, has been reinventing itself for nearly eight decades, anticipating the growing learning requirements of learners.

"The 10th edition also is equipped with a strong digital support system, including an app," she said.

It is equipped with several digital tools. With iSpeaker, learners can get help preparing for speaking exams and presentations. With iWriter, learners can plan, write and review their written work. Text Checker allows the teacher to check any text against the Oxford 3000, 5000, and OPAL (Oxford Phrasal Academic Lexicon) written word list.

Resources accessible through online premium access include lesson plans, worksheets, video walkthroughs, and classroom and self-study activities. With the OALD app one can find 86,000 words, 95,000 phrases, 112,000 meanings and 237,000 examples.

The dictionary, which spans 77 years, was originally published in Japan in 1942 and was first brought out by OUP in 1948. The learner's dictionary is based on the original values of its creator, Albert Sydney Hornby, whose aim was to help language learners worldwide understand the meaning of English words.

Bengaluru, May 11: Janata Dal (Secular) leader HD Kumaraswamy on Monday asked Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa to urge PM Narendra Modi to give a 'COVID Package' to Karnataka.

In a series of tweets, Kumaraswamy said that Yediyurappa should raise the demand during the course of the meeting scheduled to be held today with the PM, which will also be attended by Chief Ministers of other states.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold talks with CMs from different states on coronavirus control and lockdown today. The state's CM BS Yediyurappa will also be in it. At this meeting, BSY should urge Modi to offer a 'COVID Package' to the state," Kumaraswamy's tweet, roughly translated in English from Kannada, read.

In subsequent tweets, the JDS leader said that, "The central government has set up a PM Cares Fund for the fight against Corona. As MPs, entrepreneurs and citizens have made generous donations. BSY must convince Modi that the state has not received adequate financial support from the Center so far."

He further said that the package could be utilised for "medical procedures", "financial compensation for the affected people."

Kumaraswamy also said that "In addition to the 'COVID Package', other dues from the Center, including GST dues, flood relief, etc should also be asked for by BS Yediyurappa at the meeting with Modi."

PM Narendra Modi will hold a meeting, through video conference, with state Chief Ministers on Monday at 3 pm to discuss the prevailing COVID-19 situation in the country.

The Prime Minister had earlier interacted with Chief Ministers four times over the COVID-19 situation via video conferencing.

The upcoming interaction comes days ahead of the scheduled ending of the nationwide lockdown.

The ongoing lockdown, which was imposed to contain the spread of coronavirus, is scheduled to end on May 17.
