Cops suicide spree continues; transfer drives head constable to kill self

KarnatakaBengaluru, Jul 22: The spate of suicides involving police staff has continued in Karnataka with a constable allegedly taking his life this morning in Kalaburgi owing to issues relating to his transfer.

Annarao Saibanna Gamaga (48), a head constable with the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB), was found hanging from the ceiling at his staff quarters in Sultanpur in Kalaburgi. Though he was taken to a nearby hospital, he did not survive.

According to his relatives, Annarao, who was working for the Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP), was transferred to the IRB a year ago. Owing to poor health, he requested to be transferred back to the KSRP. However, it is alleged that his superiors demanded money to transfer him back to the KSRP. Annarao was reportedly under great stress and may have committed suicide because of the issue, his relatives alleged.

This is the fifth suicide case involving police staff in the last two weeks in Karnataka. The police have registered a case and probing the circumstances leading to Annarao's suicide.

Surathkal, Jan 4: The National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) have signed agreementsfor joint research and development of technology for application in space, a statement said here on Friday.

As part of the agreement, which was signed by P Venkatakrishnan, Director of ISRO CBPO Division and Prof Umamaheswar Rao, Director, NITK, ISRO will establish the Regional Academic Center for Space (RACS) at NITK.

Bengaluru, July 23: The Janta Dal (Secular) and Congress that had joined hands together in Karnataka ‘to keep communal forces at bay, have once again turned archrivals. The development comes a year after the collapse of JD(S)-Congress coalition government in the state.

Recently, Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah claimed that the Congress would have won at least 10 seats in the Lok Sabha elections had it not been for the alliance with the JD(S). In response, former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy of the JD(S), who headed the coalition government, blamed the Congress for its many 'conspiracies'.

In a series of tweets on Wednesday, Kumaraswamy said he was prompted by Siddarmaiah's claims to recall what transpired during the coalition government. 

"There will never be a future alliance with Congress," Kumaraswamy declared, in a letter to his party colleagues on Wednesday. He claimed that there were many conspiracies on part of Congress, which led to the fall of the coalition government.

Bengaluru, May 8: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Friday held a meeting with opposition parties at his office here over COVID-19 situation in the state.

Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Congress leaders SR Patil and DK Shivakumar participated in the meeting. From Janata Dal (Secular), former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy and HD Revanna were present.

"Congress legislative party leader Siddaramaiah and DK Shivkumar have arranged the Chief Minister to request the central government to announce a special package of Rs 50,000 crore to Karnataka to fight coronavirus and also special packages requested for small and medium scale industries," said Siddaramaiah's media secretary.

Meanwhile, Yediyurappa has announced a special package for those involved in leather works, especially those who work on the roadside.

The special package has been announced for cobblers and leather workers, who work on the roadside.
