Cyclone Ockhi fallout: Rain hits normal life in parts of Karnataka

Drizzling was reported parts of Karnataka including Uttara Kannada, Belagavi, Dharwad and some remote areas in Dakshina Kannada district owing to cyclone Ockhi on Tuesday.

Rain accompanied by strong winds was reported since morning in Karwar. There was drizzling in Bhatkal, Kumta and Haliyal.

High tides and strong winds were seen in the sea, which resulted in fishing boats remaining anchored off the harbours.

Water gushed up to three feet into the beaches at Gokarna and Tadadi. Tourists were advised not to venture into the sea.

A house was partially damaged at Karki in Honnavar taluk, Uttara Kannada district. Drizzling was reported in many places of Belagavi district as also the twin cities of Hubballi-Dharwad.

In Belagavi city, cloudy weather was witnessedsince morning. The day-time temperature dropped to 19 degrees Celsius. People reported to work behind schedule, while markets appeared dull due to the less number of customers.

Mangaluru: Thousands travel from Ullal to join anti-CAA protest in Kasba Bengre

Mangaluru, Jan 21: Thousands of people today boarded boats from Ullal's Kotepura to join a massive protest against the amended Citizenship Act and National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Kasba Bengre, here.

People traveling through boats and steamers decorated with national flags, raised slogans during their journey through the river.

The innovative mode of transportation was used by the protestors to reach the venue, as it not only saved time but was also more convenient for the fishermen, a large number of people from this community joined the protest.

The protestors docked their boats at the shore and reached the venue chanting slogans of azadi.

'Will speak to CM on demands of ASHA workers,' assures Karnataka health minister

Bengaluru, Jul 30: As the protest by Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers entered the 20th day, Karnataka Health Minister B Sriramulu on Wednesday assured them that he would take up their demands with Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa.

The ASHA workers are sitting in protests with a number of demands that include a minimum salary of Rs 12,000 per month.

Assuring that their matter will be taken up, Karnataka Health Minister B Sriramulu said while speaking to reporters, "We know how hard ASHA workers have been working as frontline warriors in the fight against COVID-19. I will discuss with CM about their demand for a minimum wage of Rs 12,000 per month and the final decision will be taken soon."

"We went to the police to allow us to protest. Officials then took us to the CM. During the meeting, he demanded some time to sort out our issues.

We told him we are protesting for the past 20 days and that it was he who needs to call a meeting with us. Only then will he know the problems being faced by ASHA workers," an ASHA worker said clad in her signature pink sari.

"When asked as to why salaries of ASHA workers were not hiked, while it was done for doctors and other healthcare officials, the CM requested for time to look into the matter.

We are not much happy now, but will if he comes in front of the media and promises to sort out our issues, then we will listen to him", she added.

No decision yet on lockdown in Dakshina Kannada, clarifies Minister

Mangaluru, Jul 12: No decision has been taken regarding re-imposition of complete lockdown in Dakshina Kannada, according to district in charge minister Kota Srinivas Poojary.

The minister's clarification comes following social media rumours about complete lockdown in the district from July 14 to contain the spread of coronavirus.

Speaking to media persons, Mr Poojary said that chief minister will hold video conference with Deputy Commissioners, MPs and District ministers of the state on July 13 at 11 am. following which a decision will be taken.

He also clarified that the government will not cause inconveniences to people by taking any such decision all of a sudden. "People should not pay heed to rumours," he said.
