Demonetisation largest money-laundering scheme ever: Arun Shourie

Former union minister, economist and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Arun Shourie has stepped up his attack the Narendra Modi government and its policies, terming the demonetisation exercise as a money laundering scheme.

In an interview with NDTV last night he said: "Demonetisation was a money laundering scheme. Because everybody who had black money, converted into white through banks."

Shourie further said that it was conceived by the government, entirely implemented by the government and entirely acclaimed by the government.

The former minister also suggested that none of the stated objectives was really achieved after demonetisation. He said: "Which argument today survives? Black money? All of it turned white. Terrorism? Terrorists are still coming into India. At the end they have nothing to say."

Prime Minister Narednra Modi onNovember 8, the day he announced the demonetisation, had said that the move would destroy black money and would make terrorists bankrupt. Shourie supported Yashwant Sinha and P Chidambaram's latest comments on economic slowdown. He said these economists have been 'talking about facts' that are based on the reports from The Economic Survey and the RBI.

Several economists have expressed their concern over the latest economic slowdown. India's GDP growth for the period of April-June came down to a three-year low of 5.7 per cent . The growth rate declined further from the 6.1 per cent in the preceding quarter. The Economic Survey had projected a growth of 6.75 per cent to 7.5 per cent for 2017-18.

"Is it a fact or not that GDP has collapsed to 3.7 per cent according to the old series? Is it a fact or not that index of industrial production has gone down from about 9 per cent in 2015-16 to about 1.7 per cent in April to July? Is it not a matter of concerned," Shourie asked.

Earlier in September, former Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha wrote a hard-hitting article , accusing Finance Minister Arun Jaitley of destroying the economy. He had also termed the demonetisation as an unmitigated economic disaster that has played havoc with businesses.

Sinha had underlined, in the article, the recent economic crisis and said: "Private investment has shrunk as never before in two decades, industrial production has all but collapsed, agriculture is in distress, construction industry, a big employer of the work force, is in the doldrums, the rest of the service sector is also in the slow lane, exports have dwindled, sector after sector of the economy is in distress."

This is not the first time when Shourie has criticized the government and its policies. In January this year, Arun Shourie said that the demonetisation  was the 'greatest economic blunder in 70 years '. While seaking at the National Institute of Advanced Studies in Bengaluru, the former minister in Vajpayee's government said, "Demonetisation is the symptom of a pattern of government where there is no consultation. It may happen again and again."

Nine months later, Shourie again lambasted the top leadership and said those running the government do not seek any advice or hear the facts. He said: "This is a government of two-and-a-half persons, that is, Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and one in-house lawyer. They don't have the expertise and they have surrounded themselves by persons who don't have the expertise."

Retired so called intellectuals should not mislead the country. I do not get a single point of argument for the statements made. Let us see logic and statistics. Just because the media wants rubbish and you have an opportunity, plz do not does below. Plz put forth logic so that we citizens can understand something better. Our understanding  of things as of today doesn't tally with the outburst.

Alappuzha, Jan 4: The management committee of a mosque in Kerala is all set to solemnize the wedding of a Hindu couple, setting yet another instance of the communal harmony prevailing in Kerala.

The Cheravally Muslim Jamaat Committee at Kayamkulam in Alappuzha district in South Kerala is conducting the marriage of Anju and Sharath after the bride's mother approached the Jamaat authorities seeking help.

The marriage will be held at the mosque premises on January 19 as per Hindu rituals and the Jamaat Committee has also prepared the invitations.

Anju's father Ashokan died a few years back and her mother Bindhu was struggling to win bread for her three children. Nujumudeen Alummoottil, a businessman and secretary of the Jamaat had helped the family earlier also.

Hence Bindu sought his help for the marriage of Anju. Nujumudeen discussed it with other members of the Jamaat committee and members of the mosque.

Najumudeen said that there was no hesitation from anyone on conducting the marriage by the mosque at its premises. A gift in cash and gold would be also given to the couple.

Kerala recently witnessed a church allowing the Muslim believers who participated in an anti-CAA meet to offer namaz at the church premises and another church conducting a carol service with the youth of the parish dressed up in traditional Muslim attire.

Bengaluru, May 12: Last week, a 28-year-old, eight-months pregnant woman, was found murdered at her house, in Diburahalli. The woman was hacked to death with a machete during the day and was discovered only after her family members returned home, later in the day. After the alleged murder, the accused tried to destroy the evidence, by cleaning the crime scene, and wiping the bloodstains off the walls and floors.

The victim was a homemaker and her husband is employed in the railway department. The police suspected that the murder was a result of someone known to the woman and family, and were soon proved right. The woman was murdered by her own brother-in-law, frustrated with her for allegedly not taking care of his mother and other family members properly.

The victim has been identified as Jyothi, and the accused is her husband’s brother Hareesh Babu, 38. “Jyothi and the accused are alleged to have had differences for the past few years. Their fights kept escalating over the years. She had also informed her family and her husband about the regular fights with the brother-in-law. The accused had been advised by the family, to back off from Jyothi. Owing to his violent streak, Babu’s wife had deserted him and their son. Since his wife’s departure, he had started troubling his brother’s wife and was regularly picked a fight with her.

He complained that Jyothi neglected to take care of his mother and other family members. Investigations reveal these as false allegations, and in fact, Babu’s son was being raised by Jyothi,” said an officer on part of investigations.

Last week, when the victim was resting at home, the accused returned home at around 10.30 am and picked up a fight with her. The fight escalated and Babu ended up hacking her to death with a machete. The victim’s father Nagaraj, at the time of filing a complaint, mentioned Babu’s regular fights with Jyothi and suspected his role in the murder of his pregnant daughter.

The accused, after killing her, had gone to the farm and pretended to not knowing about the the happenings back home. Based on the complainant’s suspicion, the police picked up Babu. After a thorough interrogation, Babu reportedly confessed to the murder of his sister-in-law. The machete, which was used for Jyothi’s murder, was also recovered by the police team.

A case of murder under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered and further investigations are underway.
