Diplomats’ stir shuts Israeli embassy in India too

Mumbai, Nov 1: The Israeli embassy in New Delhi and its two consulates in Bengaluru and Mumbai were shut for business, as in other countries around the world, due to a diplomats' strike, an official said on Thursday.

"As Israeli embassies and consulates the world over, our embassy in New Delhi and consulates in Bengaluru and Mumbai are closed for business since Wednesday owing to disagreement between the ministries of finance and foreign affairs," a consulate official told IANS here.

The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) on Wednesday announced on its official Facebook account that the Ministry of Finance had been breaching longstanding agreements with the foreign affairs employees.

"We are forced to close Israeli missions around the world as of today, October 30," said the statement.

According to the post on the popular social media platform, no consular services will be provided and entry into the missions will not be allowed.

"The Finance Ministry's ongoing disruption of the vital diplomatic tools of the state of Israel have left the MFA employees with no choice but to pursue sanctions," added the post.

Spokesman Elad Strohmayer of the Israeli embassy in the US tweeted from Washington: "We're on strike! ... No consular services will be provided and no one will be allowed to enter the embassy."

"Due to the decision of the Israeli Ministry of Finance to breach understandings that were agreed upon and signed by them on July 21, 2019, we are forced to close the embassy," Strohmayer tweeted.

According to the ministry of foreign affairs, the breach amounted to applying a one-sided protocol, which has altered a decades-long protocol.

The defence attaches also joined the strike over pay disagreements, showing unity between the foreign and defence ministries.

Multiple official Twitter accounts of Israeli embassies in the UK, Rwanda, South Africa, Ghana and others reiterated the strike call.

Israel and India established diplomatic relations in 1992 and set up consulates in Mumbai and Bengaluru.

New Delhi, Feb 29: The father of Intelligence Bureau staffer Ankit Sharma, whose body was pulled out of a drain in northeast Delhi's riot-hit Chand Bagh, complained to police that goons had assembled at the residence of former AAP counselor Tahir Hussain and were throwing petrol bombs from the rooftop.

According to the FIR which was registered on Thursday on the basis of the complaint lodged by Ankit's father Ravinder, the goons were also firing from the rooftop.

On Tuesday, Ankit returned from his office at 5 pm and then went outside to buy groceries. When he did not return, the family started looking for him and later filed a missing report, the FIR stated.

They got to know from their neighbours that a body has been recovered from a drain… later it was found to be that of Anikt, it said, adding the body had multiple stab injuries on the face, head, back, and chest.

The family has alleged in the FIR that it was Hussain and the goons at his residence who killed Ankit. In the FIR, Hussain has been accused of murder, destruction of evidence and abduction.

Soon after the FIR was registered on Thursday, the AAP suspended Tahir Hussain from the primary membership of the party till the police completed its probe.

The death toll in Delhi's communal violence rose to 42 on Friday as the situation showed some signs of returning to normalcy and clouds of smoke cleared to reveal the extent of the damage from the worst riots in the city in over three decades.

A total of 148 FIRs have been registered and 630 people have been either arrested or detained so far in connection with the communal violence, a Delhi Police spokesperson said.

New Delhi, Feb 11: Votes between Hindus and Muslims were ''completely polarised'', said Congress party's Alka Lamba, as she trailed at Chandni Chowk assembly seat on Tuesday.

"I accept the result, but don't give up. Hindu-Muslim votes were completely polarised. The #Congress Party will now have to prepare for a new fight with new faces and a long struggle for the people of #Delhi. If you fight today, you will also win tomorrow," Ms. Lamba tweeted in Hindi.

As per the Election Commission (EC) website, Ms. Lamba is in third position with just 1,229 votes so far. AAP's Parlad Singh Sawhney is ahead with 23,281 votes followed by Suman Kumar Gupta of BJP.

Ms. Lamba, who had won from Chandni Chowk on an AAP ticket in the 2015 polls, was expelled from AAP last year after she joined Congress, citing differences with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

As per the EC official trends, AAP is maintaining a strong lead on 58 seats, while the BJP is far behind at 12. Congress has failed to open its account so far.

The counting of votes for 70 seats of the Delhi Assembly began at 8 am today amid tight security.

Delhi went to polls in a single-phase on February 8. AAP, BJP, Congress are the main political parties in the fray.

New Delhi, Aug 2: The Centre has written to all states and Union Territories stating that smartphones and tablet devices should be allowed for hospitalised Covid-19 patients so that they can interact with family and friends through video conferencing, which would provide them psychological support.

Though mobile phones are allowed in hospital wards, the missive was issued following some representation from the kin of patients alleging otherwise.

Director-General of Health Services (DGHS) in the Health Ministry Dr Rajiv Garg in the letter to the principal secretaries of health and medical education of states and Union territories said appropriate protocols for disinfecting devices and allotting timeslots can be developed by the hospital concerned to facilitate contact between patients and their family.

He underlined that administrative and medical teams should be responsive to the psychological needs of patients admitted in Covid-19 wards and ICUs of various hospitals.

"Social connection can calm down patients and also reinforce the psychological support given by the treating team. Please instruct all concerned that they should allow smartphones and tablet devices in patient areas so that the patient can video conference with their family and friends," stated the letter issued on July 29.

"Though mobile phones are allowed in the wards to enable a patient stay in touch with his or her family, we received representations from the patient families from some states stating mobile phones are not being allowed by hospital administrations because of which they were not being able to stay in contact with the patient," said Dr Garg.
