Former hockey player from Kodagu stabbed to death by wife

Madikeri, Aug 21: A former hockey player from Kodagu was allegedly stabbed to death by his wife over some dispute in Malad suburb located in the northern part of Mumbai.

52-year-old Chenanda Naveen Appaiah and his wife Amita had an argument over some issue at around 1 pm yesterday. The dispute escalated into a fight and during the scuffle, Amita stabbed her husband, said a police official.

"Even though the motive behind the murder is yet to be ascertained, the dispute appears to be the immediate reason behind the killing," a senior police official attached to Malad police station said. Amita is yet to be arrested as she too has sustained injuries and is undergoing treatment at the hospital, said police.

Meanwhile, a television actress, who stays on the 26th floor of the same building, said, "My domestic help heard a scream at around 1:15 pm and found Amita lying near her door and writhing in pain. "He then went down and informed the security guards about the incident, but they refused any help and instead asked the domestic help to call police helpline number."

Appaiah, who had moved to Mumbai years ago was a close friend of former Indian hockey captain Dhanraj Pillai.

Mangaluru, Feb 6: Over 1500 students and teachers are expected to take part in a three-day State-level conference of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishat (ABVP) starting on Friday here.

Reception Committee chairman K.C. Nayak and secretary Shantharama Shetty told reporters here today that Deputy Chief Minister C.N. Ashwath Narayana would inaugurate the conference at the Kudmul Ranga Rao Town Hall.

The former ABVP national president and former Nagaland Governor P.B. Acharya would preside over the programme that would be attended by Mangalore University Vice-Chancellor P.S. Yadapadithaya, ABVP national organising secretary Ashish Chauhan and others.

Bengaluru, Mar 25: Bengaluru Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao on Wednesday called a meeting of online, e-commerce food, medicine, groceries or animal products delivery aggregators at his office in wake of situation arising out of lockdown imposed in the entire country due to coronavirus epidemic.

The Police Commissioner has appealed one representative from each agency to join him in the meeting at 7 pm.

"I have called a meeting of online, e-commerce food, medicine, groceries, vegetables/fruits or animal products delivery aggregators today at 7 pm at my office at Infantry Road, Bengaluru," said Rao.

"One representative from each agency may please come. We promise all cooperation, please come," he said.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Wednesday confirmed 539 positive cases of coronavirus in the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on Tuesday announced a 21-day lockdown in the entire country effective from midnight to deal with the spread of coronavirus, saying that "social distancing" is the only option to deal with the disease, which spreads rapidly.

Mangaluru, Mar 25: Fishing boats returned to the old Port in Mangaluru after the government prohibited deep-sea fishing till further orders on Wednesday to prevent the assembly of a large gathering here in the wake of the novel coronavirus pandemic. 

According to officials, deep-sea fishing activities result in the gathering of a large number of people and is much against the government's direction on maintaining social distancing. 

According to the Department, the 42-Km coastline in Dakshina Kannada hass 57 purse seine boats, 1,270 trawl boats, 1,483 gillnet boats, 549 other mechanised boats.
