Bengaluru, Aug 24: The Jayanti or birth anniversary of Bramharshi Narayana Guru, scheduled on September 16, will be celebrated as a government programme, assured Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
Sri Narayana Guru, a Kerala-born philosopher and social reformer, is known for his efforts for the spiritual and social upliftment of the downtrodden.
A delegation of the Billava Association, led by its president M. Vedakumar, called on the chief minister on Wednesday.
Mr. Siddaramaiah assured them that the 162rd Jayanti of Sri Narayana Guru will be celebrated as a government programme.
He has directed officials of the Department of Kannada and Culture to make arrangements for the celebrations, according to a release from the Chief Minister's office.

Mangaluru, Jan 17: A poultry truck transporting chickens overturned on Friday at Perne village near Uppinangady on Mangaluru-Bengaluru National Highway, killing 200 of them.
Police said that the truck was headed towards Mangaluru from Uppinangady when the truck driver lost control of the vehicle causing it to topple. As many as 200 chickens were killed in the mishap.
Another vehicle was later used to transport the remaining chickens.

Managluru, May 13: Expressing regret over the inconvenience faced by the first batch of passengers from UAE that landed at Mangaluru International Airport last night, Dr C N Ashwath Narayan, deputy chief minister of Karnataka, today assured that all short comings will be addressed.
Addressing Kannadiga delegates from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and other countries through a video conference, Dr Narayan also assured that necessary steps will be taken by the Karnataka government to provide free quarantine facility for those who cannot afford private quarantine in hotels or guest houses. "The incontinence faced by passengers from Dubai at Mangaluru Airport have already been brought to my notice. All these shortcomings will be addressed. We will take appropriate steps to prevent the recurrence of such inconveniences," he said.
He said that the Karnataka government has already amended its standard operating procedure for international passengers to allow pregnant women to entre home quarantine if they test negative for covid-19.
The problems faced by passengers at Mangaluru Airport last night include lack of staff to handle luggagues, lack of food and water, delay in arranging vehicle to transport passengers to quarantine centres and lack of free quarantine facility for those who cannot afford private quarantine facility. The next batch of repatriates will not face these problems, he said.
Dr Narayan also promised to exert pressur on the union governmment to operate more flights to repatriate stranded Indians, especially Kannadigas from Saudi Arabia.

Bengaluru, Jul 3: Karnataka Health Department on Thursday permitted District Health Departments to appoint doctors with MBBS, on a contractual basis with permission of concerned District Health Officers and Commissioners, a statement said.
The state government has also hiked the salary of contractual doctors from Rs 45000 to Rs 60000 per month.
Earlier in the day, Karnataka Health Minister B Sriramulu urged contract doctors to continue offering their services amid their demand for regularisation of services.
"I request the contract doctors with folded hands to continue offering their services. With regard to their two demands, one of salary hike and the other being permanency, I assure all of them that I stand with them and their requests will definitely be fulfilled," said Mr Sriramulu.
The Chief Minister had also discussed about the two issues yesterday and agreed to facilitate the pay hike, he added.
