Have invited Siddaramaiah; it’s up to him to come: Pejawar seer

Udupi, Jun 16: Vishwesha Tirtha Swami of Paryaya Pejawar Mutt said on Thursday that he had, through his representatives, urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to visit the Sri Krishna Mutt/Temple on June 18, when President Pranab Mukherjee was here.pejawar

Speaking to presspersons, the seer said that Mr. Siddaramaiah’s secretary had informed his representatives that there was no likelihood of the Chief Minister visiting Udupi.

But there was no response from Mr. Siddaramaiah himself. “Hence, one will have to wait till Sunday to see what happens. I have invited him. It is up to to the Chief Minister to decide,” he said.

To a query, the seer said that he did not know the reason for Mr. Siddaramaiah for not visiting the temple.

He had earlier met Mr. Siddaramaiah at some functions in Bengaluru and Mangaluru and the meeting was civil.

When Mr. Siddaramaiah was facing a by-election after joining the Congress, he had met him (the seer) in Mysuru and sought his blessings. “But after becoming Chief Minister, he has not met me,” he said.

Asked whether Mr. Siddaramaiah was not visiting the Sri Krishna Mutt/Temple because he was saddened over the Kanaka Gopura controversy, the seer said that the Kanaka Gopura was new name for the gopura which was built in 2004-05. It was built in the place of an earlier gopura constructed by late Vidyapurna Tirtha of Krishnapur Mutt during his Paryaya period in 1910-12, which had become dilapidated.

The gopura was located above the Kanakanakindi (as is the present gopura). There was no connection between the saint-composer Sri Kanakadasa and the gopura.

The gopura constructed in 2004-05 was named after Sri Kanakadasa. Hence, there was no controversy over it. In fact, everyone was happy that the gopura was named after Sri Kanakadasa and there was no reason to be dissatisfied with it.

Besides, a Kanaka Mantapa had been constructed within the Sri Krishna Mutt/Temple premises and an idol of Sri Kanakadasa had been installed there. Kanaka Jayanti was being celebrated here annually. All reverence and respect were being shown to Sri Kanakadasa here. There was no point in making allegations, he said.

Though Mr. Siddaramaiah had not participated in his Paryaya ascension ceremony last year and the Sri Madhwacharya Sapta Shatamanotsava ceremony this year, he had later sent Kanike (offering) to Lord Krishna through his representatives. Mr. Siddaramaiah’s wife had called him to say that an offering had been sent and that they would visit the temple later, the seer recalled.

Kanpur, Jan 1: In a seemingly bizarre development, the IIT in Kanpur has set up a panel to decide whether the poem "Hum dekhenge lazim hai ki hum bhi dekhenge", penned by Faiz Ahmad Faiz, is anti-Hindu.

The panel has been set up in response to complaints filed by a faculty member who claimed that the students, during a protest, sang this poem which was anti-Hindu.

The poem reads thus -- "Lazim hai ke hum bhi dekhenge. Jab arz-e-Khuda ke kaabe se. Sab bhut uthwaye jayenge, Hum ahl-e-safa mardood-e-harm. Masnad pe bithaye jayenge. Sab taaj uchale jaenge. Sab takht giraye jayenge. Bas naam rahega Allah ka. Hum dekhenge."

It was the last line that has turned into a bone of contention. Translated into English, it means, 'When thrones will vanish, only Allah's name will remain' -- implying the misleading translation by the professor.

The poem had been written by Faiz in reference to military dictator Zia-ul-Haq in 1979 and was against the military rule in Pakistan. Faiz had left leanings and was an atheist. He was known for his revolutionary writings that kept him in jail for several years.

It may be recalled that the IIT-Kanpur students had taken out a peaceful march on the campus on December 17 in support of the students of Jamia Millia Islamia and during the march, the students sang the Faiz poem.

According to IIT Deputy director Manindra Agarwal: "In the video, the students are seen reciting the Faiz poem which can also be perceived as being anti-Hindu.

The IIT faculty member, in his complaint, has alleged that the students made anti-India and communal statements during their demonstration in solidarity with the Jamia students.

The complaint was based on two lines of the poem, which have obviously been misinterpreted -- "When all idols will be removed, only Allah's name will remain."

The faculty member has stated that "organisers and masterminds must be identified and expelled immediately."

Fifteen other students have also signed the complaint filed by the professor against the protesting students.

Meanwhile, IIT students have said that the faculty member who lodged the complaint has been banned on a social networking site for posting communal content.

In an article published on the IIT-Kanpur student media portal, the students clarified what exactly happened on the day of protest and how their chant was given a 'communal and misleading' turn. They stated that they had recited a few lines of the Faiz poem in reference to the police crackdown on the Jamia students.

Mangaluru, June 21: The first ever repatriation flight from Saudi Arabia’s Dammam Karnataka’s Mangaluru under Vande Bharat Mission (VBM) today brought home around 165 stranded passengers.

The IndiGo flight took off from Dammam International Airport at 11 a.m. (Saudi time) and landed at Mangaluru International Airport at 6:30 p.m.

The stranded passengers included pregnant women, senior citizens and those who are in need of emergency medical treatment are on board.

The passengers were screened at the Airport before being despatched for institutional quarantine in special buses.

Even though a few charter flights arranged by a couple of NRI entrepreneurs have already repatriated hundreds of stranded people from Dammam to Mangaluru, the government of India had not operated any repatriation flight under VBM on this sector so far.

Saudi Kannadigas Humanity Forum (SKHF), an NGO which came into existence to help the stranded Kannadigas in Saudi Arabia during covid-19 lockdown had been successful in persuading the government of India operate a flight on Dammam-Mangaluru sector under VBM.

SKHF has also set up an online portal for those who were in need of emergency repatriation. In today’s flight around 100 passengers have obtained seats through SKHF.
