Karnataka expat jailed in Saudi for social media post; Sushma takes up case

New Delhi, Mar 22: Abdul Sattar Makandar, a truck driver, working in Saudi Arabia from the past 23 months has been arrested on the charges of 'spreading misinformation' on social media.

Recently, a video of an Indian migrant worker crying his eyes out due to bad working conditions in Saudi Arabia went viral on social media. The worker has been jailed, according to activists.abdul

Abdul Sattar Makandar, a truck driver and a native of Dandeli, Uttara Kannada district in Karnataka, has been working in the Arab country from the past 23 months. He had applied for leave to come home over five months ago.

In the video, Abdul talks about his grievances and explains how his employer is not giving him proper salary or any money for food.

The video was posted by Indian human rights activist Kundan Srivastava but was soon taken down after the legal representatives of Al Suroor United Group approached him. "I urge the Government, Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj, PMO India Narendra Modi to help Abdul Sattar Makandar to come back to India," said Srivastava, reports The Independent.

Abdul was arrested on charges of 'spreading misinformation' on social media

The Al Suroor United Group has denied the claims made by Abdul and said all workers were entitled leave after two years of service and he is six weeks away from it.

Bengaluru, Mar 25: Bengaluru Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao on Wednesday called a meeting of online, e-commerce food, medicine, groceries or animal products delivery aggregators at his office in wake of situation arising out of lockdown imposed in the entire country due to coronavirus epidemic.

The Police Commissioner has appealed one representative from each agency to join him in the meeting at 7 pm.

"I have called a meeting of online, e-commerce food, medicine, groceries, vegetables/fruits or animal products delivery aggregators today at 7 pm at my office at Infantry Road, Bengaluru," said Rao.

"One representative from each agency may please come. We promise all cooperation, please come," he said.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Wednesday confirmed 539 positive cases of coronavirus in the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on Tuesday announced a 21-day lockdown in the entire country effective from midnight to deal with the spread of coronavirus, saying that "social distancing" is the only option to deal with the disease, which spreads rapidly.

Bengaluru, Mar 2: BJP leader and Karnataka cabinet minister BS Sriramulu's daughter Rakshita's wedding will take place with Sanjeev Reddy here on March 5. The nine-day function will cost crores of rupees.

For the wedding, decorations and arrangements are being done at Sriramulu's home here.

The reception will take place in Bengaluru Palace Ground on March 5.

Udupi, Mar 25: A 34-year-old man who returned from Dubai tested positive for novel coronavirus in Udupi district. This is the first case in the district. 

He returned from Dubai on March 18 and got admitted to a government hospital in Udupi on March 23 for fever. The swab samples were sent to Shivamogga laboratory for testing.

The report which arrived on Wednesday confirmed that he was positive for COVID-19, said DHO Dr Sudhir Chandra Sooda.
