Mangaluru, Jan 9: Speakers at an inter-religion intellectual meet on peace, harmony and national integration here on Monday stressed on the need for organising more such meets in wards and mohallas to promote trust among people from different religions.

Imam Umer Ahmed Ilayasi, chief Imam, Delhi; Sugunendra Tirtha, seer of Udupi Puttige Mutt, Shaikuna Twaka Ahmed Musliyar, Khazi of Mangaluru; Indresh Kumar, a leader of the Rashtriya Swavam Sevak Sangh; Abdul Rasheed, president, Ullal Dargah Committee; and Father Valerian D'Souza addressed the gathering.

M N Krishnamurthy, president, Rights Awareness and Knowledge Society, which organized the event, said that communal clashes are the result of conflict of ideologies. Mostly people from lower strata of society were involved in communal troubles. They should be educated. India should hold its secular fabric intact by equally maintaining multi-cultural and multi-linguistic and multi-religious tradition.

Twaka Ahmed Musliyar termed the patronage enjoyed by Muslim community during the reign of erstwhile Hindu kingdoms in the coastal Karnataka and Kerala then as the best example of religious tolerance.?It is also recorded by Moroccan traveller Ibn Battuta who was in awe of thousands of Muslims living in peace during the rule of a Hindu king, he said.

He said that Hindus had not only wholeheartedly welcomed Arab Muslim traders to India in the 7th century A.D. but also were impressed by their character and kindness. “We should learn religious tolerance from them,” he said.

Musliyar said several Hindu kings were benevolent and granted land for mosques. One of the oldest mosques that dates back to over 1,000 years and was rechristened Zeenat Baksh by erstwhile ruler of Mysuru Tipu Sultan exists still in Mangaluru, he added.

The Khazi gave a call for the Muslims to take the onus of spreading peace in the society.

In his address Mr. Rasheed said that only a small section of society created communal trouble in Mangaluru. The others, who are in majority, should educate such persons by holding mohalla-level inter-religion meets.

Father D'Souza said that all scriptures taught that one need to be humane first to become a good human being.

The Puttige mutt seer likened the religions to “pancha mukha” (five faces) of Anjaneya with one heart. The country is like a heart with different religions.

He said that development activities depended on the prevalence of peace. If a society or a region is frequently disturbed by violent activities, development cannot take place. Stressing on the need for promoting love and peace among people, he said that more inter-religious meets should be organised to keep the relations intact.

Imam Umer Ahmed Ilayasi said that people from different religions should respect each other and love religions. Though Mangaluru is known for its entrepreneurship, it is also known for frequent communal trouble. There should be more inter-face dialogue.

Mangaluru, Feb 25: Notorious gangster Ravi Poojary,

who has been extradited to India from Senegal, has 34 cases registered against him within the city police commissionerate.

Now in Bengaluru police custody for interrogation in connection with several cases there, Poojary faces cases relating to murder, murder attempt, extortion and threat calls in the city, police sources said.

Sources said the city police are trying to get Pujari for interrogation though it would take a while as the court has allowed Bengaluru police to keep him in custody for questioning and evidence taking for 15 days.

Most of the cases in the city against him, 28 of them, are in connection with threat calls.

He had allegedly made threat calls in 2015 to the then state ministers B Ramanath Rai and Abhayachandra Jain, demanding immediate arrest of the accused in the murder of Bajrang Dal worker Prashanth Poojary.

All the cases against Poojary in the city were registered between 2007 and 2018.

Cases involving murder, death threats and shootouts are among the cases to be investigated, the sources said.

A total of 28 cases of death threat calls, one of murder, three of shootouts, one of abduction and a case of funding his associates lodged in prison are the crimes being probed by the city police.

The cases are now pending in courts at different stages of trial.

Cases of making threat calls to businessmen using his associates demanding protection money have been registered at Moodbidri, Kavoor, Kadri, Konaje, Barke and Urwa police stations.

Some of his associates were imprisoned in 2012 in connection with threat calls to a businessman from Kinnigoli.

The case relating to providing them money while in prison was also registered in the same year.

Pujari, wanted in many cases including extortion and murder in different parts of the country, including Karnataka and who had been on the run for over 15 years, was deported to Senegal following his arrest and later extradited

He had jumped bail in Senegal last year after being arrested there.

Dear Sir,

Keep aside all these type of extra expenditure like spending for statues, monuments, pilgrim amnesties etc.

During this period of virus pandamic, please use all these amount for medicines, medical facilities, food and development of the state.  We are facing shortage of medical facilites and the people are dying on the road by not getting a bed in the hospital.  Please use these amounts for the same.  During this Pandemic not even hindu brothers also accept this offer.  Leave all vote politics and concentrate to develop the state.

Kannur, Jan 23: A member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh has been arrested for attempting to create unrest in Kerala by hurling crude bombs at RSS office and police picket. The miscreants had reportedly planned to pass the blame on others.

The bomb attack took place of January 16 in Kerala’s Kannur. The accused Prabesh, an RSS hardliner, was arrested from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.

According to the Kerala police Prabesh hurled steel bombs towards the police picket in front of Kathirur Manoj Smrithi Kendram, an RSS office.

"He threw bombs during the wee hours of January 16 morning. Following the arrest he has confessed that his aim was RSS office. Kannur, being politically sensitive region, any attack on political party offices will be regarded as an act by the opponent," Kathirur SI Nijeesh said.

"We had a police picket in the region for a few months now. We are assuming he wanted to create unrest in the area by removing the police from the spot. We could contain the situation because of the CCTV visuals. He was identified immediately after the incident. Following the attack he went to Coimbatore and was hiding there. Our team nabbed him from Coimbatore," he said.

The police have also said that the accused Prabesh had many criminal cases pending against him including those under Explosive Substances Act, 1883. He was nabbed by a team lead by Kathirur SI Nijeesh, CPO Rohith and Vijeesh.

The RSS office in the region is named after Kathirur Manoj a senior karyakarta (worker) who was allegedly killed by the CPI(M) activists in 2014. Kathirur Manoj was the prime accused in the attempt to murder of senior CPI(M) leader P Jayarajan in 1999.
