Lingayats likely to be free from multiple idols as mutts break silence

Bengaluru, Sept 3: The movement for a separate religion for Lingayats got a boost with two prominent mutts —Siddaganga and Suttur — expressing their willingness for exit from the Hinduism. The two mutts in south Karnataka were steadfastly silent even as a debate was raging about the whole idea. Both the pro-and anti-separate religion factions were hoping that the two mutts would voice their support in their favour.

SM Jamdar, secretary of the Lingayat Movement, said Lingayats should trudge a path totally different from Hinduism. Community leaders have decided that Lingayat religion will be free of temples, idols and Sanskrit hymns. Pressing for constitutional recognition for the religion that was set up by Basaveshwara in 12th century, the leaders have vouched that the new religion will oppose building temples, worshipping idols and chanting Sanskrit hymns. Ironically, most of the Lingayat mutts and pontiffs are running temples, following Hindu traditions.

Both the mutts, despite tracing their origin to ‘Virakta Tradition’ practised Shaiva culture and supported study of vedas, upanishads and had even set up Sanskrit colleges besides worshipping ‘Shiva’ However Basaveshwara, opposing the idol worship and other superstitious beliefs of Hinduism, propounded Lingayat religion and called for equality of all.

SM Jamdar, Secretary of the Lingayat Movement, said: “I agree some mutts are closely following Hindu traditions. Now with the separate identity under the Constitution we hope that the Lingayat religion will be free from temples, idols and Sanskrit hymns. Even though we cannot say that there will be complete change but most of the Lingayats will change themselves and owe their allegiance to Vacahanas, literary work by Sharanas of 12th century.”

Jayamruthyunjaya Swamiji of Panchamasali Peetha said, “Siddaganga seer said he would support any movement intended to do good to the community. Similarly, the junior pontiff said that Basava philosophy is our philosophy and all of us must go together and achieve the common goal of getting constitutional recognition for separate religion.” According to Jamadar, Suttur seer also suggested to resolve the differences and go together. However, there was no official statement in this regard by the seers of either mutt.

The leaders of the movement have also claimed that the Panchapeethas which initially showed resistance have also mellowed down their opposition by showing signs of compromise. “What we did not see for nearly 300 years we are witnessing now in the last few days,” Jamadar said.

Bengaluru, Mar 13: India has registered the first confirmed case of death due to novel coronavirus. A 76-year-old man from Karnataka's Kalaburgi who passed away recently has been tested positive for Covid-19.

The doctors had suspected that the man had coronavirus, however, the test had not confirmed it.

In an official notification, a senior health official in Karnataka government Dr Suresh Shastri said that the lab test has confirmed that the deceased man had Covid-19.

"The 76-year-old man from Kalburgi who passed away and was a suspected COVID 19 patient has been confirmed for COVID 19. The necessary contact tracing, isolation and other measures as per protocol are being carried out. Telangana government has also been informed since he went to a private hospital there," Dr Suresh Shastri said.

The same information was also shared by Karnataka health minister B Sriramulu.

A senior Union health ministry official said in New Delhi that the death of the man had visited Saudi Arabia from January 29 to February 29. The official said the man had reached in Hyderabad on February 29 and went to Kalaburagi in Karnataka.

State Joint Director (Communicable Diseases) BG Prakash Kumar said all protocols were followed for disposal of the body.

"The body is disinfected completely and disposed of as per the Government of India guidelines," he added when asked to elaborate on the protocols.

He said the Telangana government has also been informed as the man had gone to a private hospital in Hyderabad earlier.

While announcing the death of the man on Tuesday, the state authorities had said the exact cause his death was being ascertained.

According to the Union health ministry official, "While he was asymptomatic on his return (from Saudi Arabia), he developed symptoms of fever and cough on 6th March. One private doctor visited him at his home and treated him there."

"On 9th March, the symptoms got aggravated and he was shifted to a private hospital in Kalaburagi. In this private hospital, he was provisionally diagnosed as 'mid-zone viral pneumonia' and 'suspected Covid-19'," the official said.

"The sample was collected on March 9... Without waiting for the test results, the attendees insisted and the patient was discharged against medical advice and the attendees took him to a private hospital in Hyderabad," the official said.

The patient was admitted to a private hospital in Hyderabad and treated. He died on Tuesday when he was being brought back to the Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) in Kalaburagi.

Apart from the deceased, Karnataka has confirmed five other positive cases of the novel coronavirus. The fifth case, confirmed on Thursday is of a 26-year-old man who recently returned from Greece.

The patient has been admitted and isolated at a hospital and his condition is stable, a department media bulletin said.

The day also saw the education department declaring summer holidays for students from kindergarten to class six and study leave for higher classes in the city as a precautionary measure.

Bengaluru, Mar 13: Several ministers staying at the Bengaluru resort had been emotionally pressurised to leave the Congress party, said Congress leader Jitu Patwari on Thursday after he was rescued by party leader DK Shivakumar from getting arrested due to the scuffle that had broken out at Embassy Boulevard here.

"We had received information that one of the MLAs, Manoj Chaudhary, staying at the Boulevard wanted his father to bring him back home," Patwari told reporters.

He said, "We had accompanied Manoj's father to the resort but the moment we entered the restaurant at the resort, some miscreants took away Manoj to some other unknown place," Patwari told reporters.

"Meanwhile, we (Lakhan Singh and Jitu Patwari) were manhandled and taken to the police station," he added.

Patwari said that the police had started the process of arresting them but Shivakumar came to their rescue and stopped their arrest.

He further said, "The police manhandled us even though we tried to talk to them in a very calm manner."

"If the MLAs giving resignation was their decision then why is the BJP not allowing them to contact their families," the MP said.

He further said that Jyotiraditya Scindia would soon become a minister but "why are the other ministers being made scapegoats."

Earlier in the day, a Congress leader in Madhya Pradesh had said that if action on the assaulters of its two leaders is not taken then the matter will be taken to the court.
