Mangaluru, Nov 3: The Mangaluru city unit of Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday organised a mass protest in front of the office of deputy commissioner here to exert pressure on the district administration and state government to address the sand scarcity.

Addressing the protesters, D Vedavyas Kamath, Mangaluru City South MLA, said there is widespread problem in various sectors due to non-availability of sand. The state government and district administration is dilly-dallying on the issue of giving permission for sand mining. This is not the correct step and is causing problems to middle and lower-middle income group people, he said.

Sand rate is beyond their reach and with that their dream of constructing their own dwelling, the MLA said, adding the government must understand their plight and act. He warned that his party would intensify the protest if the the authorities concerned filed to find a permanent solution to the issue.

Noting that a high powered meeting that CM H D Kumaraswamy chaired in Bengaluru recently had assured to provide a solution to the issue in 15-days, the MLA said more than a month has passed post the fortnight deadline with no solution in sight.

As far as sand extraction in CRZ areas was concerned, the State government wrote to the Union government on October 25 and has already sought clarifications on certain aspects. The State was waiting for directions from the Union government. Hence, the State government wanted some time in the matter.

The protest in Mangaluru comes two days after the Maralu Horata Samiti of Udupi district ended its eight-day-long dharna in front of the Udupi Deputy Commissioner’s Office following talks between the protestors and Rajendra Kataria, Secretary, Department of Commerce and Industries (Mines and MSME), November 1.

Udupi, Feb 8: A rare sixth century granite idol of ‘Lajja Gauri’ has been discovered fixed on the road in Barkur village of Udupi district, according to information furnished by Dr. Shivakant Bajpai, Superintending Archaeologist of ASI Bangalore Circle. Lajja Gauri is depicted in nude form and is said to be a fertility symbol. The idol is rare, though very popular among certain cults.

Dr Shivakant Bajpai, who is on a tour of the coastal districts, said that he first came across the image when it went viral on social media. He subsequently traced it to a public road in Barkur, which is an ancient historical town of coastal Karnataka. It was the ancient capital of the Alupa kingdom and a seat of power for several centuries.

“This is a very important idol and hundreds of vehicles pass over it every day. We are rescuing it and I have issued an order to my local in-charge to keep it in safe custody. I have also sent a mail in this regard to the DC and SP of the district,” he said.

The idol is likely to be of 6th or 7th century, though further study is required to confirm a date, Dr. Bajpai said.

Lajja Gauri is a lotus-headed Hindu deity associated with abundance, fertility and sexuality, sometimes euphemistically described as Lajja ("modesty").

Bellary, Jan 4: A BJP MLA has apparently threatened 'minority' Muslims against participating in anti-CAA protests, saying that opposing the new Citizenship Act will not be good for them and they will have to face serious repercussions.

"It's just a caution for those who are protesting against the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act). We are 80 per cent and you (Muslims) are 18 per cent. Imagine what will happen if we take charge," MLA Somashekar Reddy told a gathering here on Friday.

"Beware of the majority when you live in this country. This is our country. If you want to live here, you will have to, like the Australian Prime Minister said, follow the country's traditions," he added.

He said: "So, I warn you that CAA and NRC are made by Modi and Amith Shah. If you will go against these acts, it won't be good."

Continuing to spew venom, the MLA further said, "If you wish, you can go to Pakistan. We don't have any issues. Intentionally, we would not send you."

He said that the community should live in harmony with Hindus. "If you will act as enemies, we should also react like enemies," he said.

Earlier, Bengaluru BJP MP Tejaswi Surya reportedly called CAA opposers as "puncturewalas".

The nation has been witnessing massive protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC). But Prime Minister Narendra Modi has specifically stated that the NRC was never discussed.
