Bengaluru, Apr 24: The family of a Muslim youth, is battling kidney complications after brutal custodial torture by the police, has demanded strict action against the accused. They allege that constable Ayyappa flagged down Mohammed Tanveer, 23, and his friend Danish on the night of April 9 near Lavanya Bakery at M.M. Layout for a traffic violation.

Both men were taken to the police station where Tanveer was allegedly beaten with lathis for many hours before being released the next day. The family alleged that Tanveer’s kidneys had been damaged because of the brutality of the beating and that he has to undergo dialysis.

On Sunday, the DJ Halli police booked an FIR against Ayyappa who had allegedly assaulted Tanveer during the initial confrontation and at the station, and sub-inspector Santosh. They have been charged under Sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 149 (unlawful assembly) of the the Indian Penal Code. Before the FIR was registered, the duo was suspended following an inquiry by the police commissioner.

At a press conference on Tuesday, the victim’s brother Mohammed Musaveer said that the police had been charged under bailable offences. “Such inhumane acts must be taken seriously. My brother is fighting for his life in the hospital because of them. The police must receive a punishment that is in accordance with their crime,” he said.

Tanveer had been stopped by the police for talking on his phone while riding his bike.

According to Musaveer, he and Danish were going to a drug store to buy medicines for his neighbour’s father. He was taken to the police station along with Danish where he was allegedly stripped, assaulted, abused physically and verbally, and humiliated. He fell unconscious in the police cell.

The police booked a petty case against Tanveer and allegedly made him apologise for his actions. He had to allegedly write “I’ll not do this mistake again” a hundred times in Kannada. His family allege that the police made Danish slap him.

His family had to seek the help of a social worker to secure his release.

When he was brought home, he started complaining of stomach pain, which did not subside even after two days. When it became unbearable, he was admitted to a private hospital where he is now being treated for kidney complications.

The family has also approached the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission seeking action against the police and suitable compensation for Tanveer so that he can lead a normal life. “He was scheduled to get married on May 3, but because of his condition, it has been postponed,” Musaveer added.

Chikkamagaluru, Feb 21: Alleged Bharatiya Janata Party supporters threw stones at Amulya Leona’s father’s house at Gullagadde near Koppa on Thursday night, after she was charged for making objectionable remarks at a public programme in Bengaluru.

Amulya Leona’s father Wazi said that the incident, which left window panes and doors damaged, took place at around 7.30 p.m. “They are all BJP supporters. They were in a group. I have complained to the police with the names of a few who led the group,” he said.

Three policemen have been deployed at his house since Thursday night.

Amulya Leona, a B.A. student, was charged with sedition after she raised pro-Pakistan slogans at a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Bengaluru.

Mr. Wazi, who owns a two-acre areca plantation and runs a poultry farm, said he condemned the statement made by his daughter and he would not make any attempts to get her bail. “Let the law take its course. I cannot approve of her statement,” he said.

He said he had cautioned his daughter against getting involved in protests. “I told her to complete studies first and later she could fight for poor people. But what she said yesterday is not acceptable. I don’t know what made her so. I hope a probe would bring out who prompted her to make such statements,” he said.

Mr. Wazi said he has been politically active for several years, and had earlier worked for former education minister H.G. Govinde Gowda. He then shifted to the BJP and worked in support of D.N. Jeevaraj, who represented Sringeri constituency last time, and current Udupi-Chickmagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje. “I have worked for the BJP in the past. As Govinde Gowda’s son contested on JD(S) ticket for Sringeri seat, I supported him”, he said.

Meanwhile, a video clip that went viral on Thursday night showed a group of Bajrang Dal activists compelling Mr. Wazi to shout ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’. “I have no hesitation in raising ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ slogans,” said Mr. Wazi, adding that his statement was taken forcibly. “I am a patriot. Many writers, activists and politicians have come to my place over the years,” he said.

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 26: Sister Lucy Kalappura, one of the nuns who protested against rape accused Bishop Franco Mulakkal, on Saturday claimed that she is being targeted at the convent and not being provided food.

Sister Lucy was dismissed from Franciscan Clarist congregation for supporting sisters protesting against the Bishop.

"I am being targeted at the convent and not being provided food. When I asked the reason, I was told I have been dismissed from the convent and they are not responsible for feeding me," said Sister Lucy while speaking to the reporters.

She has alleged that all this began after the release of her autobiography "Karthavinte Namathil" which means 'In the name of God'. In her book she had alleged sexual misconduct among priests and nuns.

"They prepare food and after having it they lock it in the cupboard. When I asked the reason behind this, they told me that I have been dismissed," said Sister Lucy.

"Now I am managing it all by myself with egg and tapioca that grows in the convent compound. Earlier they used to keep the leftover lunch and I used to adjust with that, but after my book was released, they started to lock the food in the cupboard," she added.

Sister Lucy also claimed that she had filed three complaints with the police on August 19, August 20 and on December 13. They had taken her statement but no action was taken.

"If the police would have taken some action against the convent authorities, they would not have behaved this way. An FIR was registered based on the three complaints but no action was taken. This gives them more power to act against me. I have drafted a letter to the Chief Minister to raise my complaint," said Sister Lucy.

Bishop Mulakkal, a senior member of the Roman Catholic clergy in India, was arrested in 2018 following allegations by a nun that he repeatedly raped and sexually assaulted her at Kuravilangad convent between 2014 and 2016, a charge that he denies.
