Students develop 'multiple dosa machine'

Mangalore, June 20: Have you heard of a machine that makes nothing but pancakes (Dosas)? That too 350 dosas per hour!


The final year students from the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Srinivas Institute of Technology, Valachil, have come up with the project so as to revolutionize the method of preparation of a famous food item pancake of South India, traditionally known as dosa.

For automation of food production a new machine 'Multiple Dosa Machine (MDM)' was introduced by the final year B.E Mechanical Engineering students, Pawan Raj, Vandana Lobo, Joel D'souza, and Jeson Martis under the guidance of Prof. Neelakantha V Londhe and Rohit Jayaraja.

This MDM can produce about 350 dosas per hour. A disc is made to rotate slowly by using the electric motor and a gear mechanism.

The raw material of dosa i.e. batter is made to fall over the disc of pans at intervals using a quick release pneumatic valve. The disc will be heated by using independent gas burner. Yummy! Your Dosa is ready!

The MDM will be more applicable to hostels, hotels, and restaurants for quick dosa preparation and also will be economical, say the inventors.

“The Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology has given a financial support for the project. The Head of the Department Dr. Dilip Kumar and Principal Dr. Srinivas Mayya D administered the project,” said one of the students.

The President of the College Administration CA A Raghavendra Rao and Vice President A Srinivas Rao have appreciated the project.

Bengaluru,  Aug 4: Karnataka has seen a substantial increase in COVID-19 recovery rate, which was 5.67 per cent in the last week, state Medical Education Minister Dr. K Sudhakar said.

"Every day there is an increase in recovery rate which is higher by 9.17 per cent in Bengaluru city. The overall recovery rate of the state by Sunday evening was 42.81 per cent and it is 35.14 per cent in Bengaluru," the Minister wrote in a tweet.

Minister Sudhakar also directed officials to resolve the issue raised by a woman who had written to him about her struggle to take possession of the body of her father in St. Johns hospital, Madivala.

The hospital she claimed was charging money to hand over the body.

"It is inhuman on part of the hospital to refuse handover of the body. I came to know about this incident in the media and responded immediately to help out the woman," Dr. Sudhakar wrote in his tweet.

Karnataka has so far reported 74,598 active COVID-19 cases, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Belagavi, Feb 22: A madrasa in Karnataka’s Belagavi district hosted a Hindu-Muslim mass marriage on its premises on Friday, sending a strong message of communal amity. As many as 76 Muslim couples and 25 Hindu couples entered marital life on the occasion.

Madarsa Al Arabia Anwarul Ulooma, an Islamic religious institute in Bailhongal, 50km from Belagavi district headquarters, played host to the event that was organised by Jamia Faizan-ul-Quran and Issa Foundation, which has conducted mass marriages on a bigger scale in Gujarat.

The mass marriage comes a month after the 100-year-old Cheravally Jamaat Masjid in Kerala’s Kayamkulam in Alappuzha hosted a Hindu wedding, complete with a vegetarian feast for 4,000 people. A Hindu priest led the rituals, and the couple sought the blessings of chief imam Riyasudeen Faizy of the mosque.

At Bailhongal, moulvis and pontiffs led the marriage proceedings and asked the couples to read passages from Quran and Bhagvad Gita.

The Hindu couples were gifted a copy of the Gita, and newly-married Muslim couples received a copy of Quran. The organisers provided each Hindu bride a mangalsutra. Bailhongal MLA Mahantesh Koujalagi blessed the couples at the event, which was attended by more than 4,000 people.

Mohammad Rafique A Naik, a member of Jamia Faizan-ul-Quran, said they have gifted each couple a refrigerator, an almirah and a tailoring machine. Ranjita Kalala, a bride who married a daily-wage labourer, said her family couldn’t afford the cost of a wedding, adding, “When we learnt about the Bailhongal madrassa’s plan, we agreed to sign up because it also sends out a message of communal harmony.”

Bengaluru, Feb 15: The new Karnataka Minister for Forest Anand Singh on Friday said that he is ready for 'change in the portfolio' as opposition parties are leveling charges against Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa for appointing him, despite having 15 cases registered under Forest Act against him.

"If Chief Minister wants to change my portfolio, I am ready," he added.

Speaking to newsmen here, he said that there are 15 cases pending against him. The Legislator from Vijayanagara in Mine rich Ballari district said anyone can go through the Chargesheets and find out whether there are any direct charges against him. Claiming that the cases against him were 'minor violations', he had earlier linked them to traffic violations by a vehicle owner.
