Mangalore August 21: Konkani is being spoiled because the speakers of the language did not care enough to learn the language in depth, writer and filmmaker K.A. Ashok Pai said here on Saturday.

Inaugurating the World Konkani Organisation (Jagotik Konkkni Songhoton), he said Konkani people spoke other languages, which affected the depth of their knowledge of Konkani.

The day is also celebrated as World Konkani Day as the language was included in the eighth Schedule of the Constitution on this day.

The programme began with cultural performances by various troupes and included one on the integration of Konkani as a language despite diversity in dialect, script, religion and caste among its speakers. Through a short skit, performers showed that fighting over the superiority of one dialect or script would ultimately kill the language.

The names of the office-bearers were announced at the function. Former Speaker of the Goa Assembly Comazinho Cardozo, and Rene Baretto from the United Kingdom, Pascal Pinto from West Asia and K.K. Utharan from Kerala were elected Vice-Presidents of the organisation. Eric Ozario of Mandd Sobhann was elected the General Secretary of the Organisation. Renowned music director Hamsalekha was also present on the occasion.
