Rural sports meet rekindles cultural glory of Tulu Nadu

February 18, 2012

Mangalore, February 18: The three-day Bhoothanatheshwara Kreedotsava, a rural sports meet, had a colourful start at Mijar, around 30 km away from here, on Friday.

A large number of people from Moodbidri and Mangalore participated in the sports events that were held on a sprawling paddy field adjacent to the ancient Shasthavu Sri Bhoothanatheshwara Temple. The presence of actors Diganth, Shivadhwaj, Pakhi Hegde, and the former Indian Hockey team captain Dhanraj Pillai attracted more people to the event.

The first event held here was “Mudi Kattuvudu”, where people had to weave a gunny bag using paddy leaves and stock rice. “Around 40 kg of rice can be stocked in this bag. Preparation of Mudi was rare now,” said Ramachandra Upadhya, who keenly watched the participants. Running race for “Bombe's” (people dressed as dolls) evoked loud cheers from people. There was a good response to “Bhoota Ota” (run for the spirits) where participants were made to run on slushy paddy field wearing a white gown and a mask. Many children participated in “Kesarugadde Nidhi Shooda”, where they were made to run on the slushy paddy field and search for treasure. For the next two days, events such as Kesarugadde Ota (running on slushy paddy field), Kesarugadde Hagga Jaggata (tug of war on slushy paddy field), Naisargika Dehardadya ( body building), cycle race, Patreyalli Neeru Thumbuvudu (filling water in a vessel), Paduke Ota (caterpillar race), Marakalu Ota, Angai Kalaga (arm wrestling), Kesarugadde Jana Kambala, Theppangai, Jataka Ota, Kutti Donne, and Kothlai Bhandi would be held. As many as 4,000 people are expected to participate in these events.

“This is my way of building a bridge between people from villages and urban areas,” said Vijayanath Shetty, the organiser of the event for the second successive year. As many as 40 games in 64 categories would be held, he said. Entertainment programmes will be held on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, a magic show by Ganesh Kudroli will be held. Singer Raghu Dixit would be performing on Sunday.

Star-studded inauguration of Bhoothanatheshwara Kreedotsava.

Bengaluru, Jul 30: As the protest by Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers entered the 20th day, Karnataka Health Minister B Sriramulu on Wednesday assured them that he would take up their demands with Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa.

The ASHA workers are sitting in protests with a number of demands that include a minimum salary of Rs 12,000 per month.

Assuring that their matter will be taken up, Karnataka Health Minister B Sriramulu said while speaking to reporters, "We know how hard ASHA workers have been working as frontline warriors in the fight against COVID-19. I will discuss with CM about their demand for a minimum wage of Rs 12,000 per month and the final decision will be taken soon."

"We went to the police to allow us to protest. Officials then took us to the CM. During the meeting, he demanded some time to sort out our issues.

We told him we are protesting for the past 20 days and that it was he who needs to call a meeting with us. Only then will he know the problems being faced by ASHA workers," an ASHA worker said clad in her signature pink sari.

"When asked as to why salaries of ASHA workers were not hiked, while it was done for doctors and other healthcare officials, the CM requested for time to look into the matter.

We are not much happy now, but will if he comes in front of the media and promises to sort out our issues, then we will listen to him", she added.
