Have tried to find answers to society's problems in novel: Bolwar

Mangalore, May 7: Human beings are not perfect. No one can become entirely good. But lesser the number of bad people, the better it is for the society, said Bolwar Muhammad Kunhi, veteran Kannada writer.

He was speaking at an interaction programme organized by Tulunadu Publications pertaining to his novel 'Swaatantrada Ota' in Mangalore.

Mr. Kunhi was asked a number of questions by readers and fans on the occasion. Responding to one of those, Mr. Kunhi said that he has not been a hater of religion as such. “I have tried to find answers to the minute problems of the society in my novel”, he said.

The veteran Kannada writer expressed immense satisfaction at accepting honour from educationist Harekala Hajabba. “It would not be wrong to say that Harekala Hajabba is a tiger of our community. I feel extremely happy that I have got the opportunity to be honoured by him”, he said.

Responding to an observation from one of the members in the gathering about Mr. Kunhi using a mild tone and language in this work unlike his earlier works which would be more aggressive in nature, Mr. Kunhi said “Yes I would to be a bit aggressive in my early days. But now I have seen that there has been a certain degree of improvement in the society. Therefore, I too have mellowed down my approach a bit”.

Bengaluru, Ju 2 As many as 19 deaths and 1,502 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Karnataka till 5 pm on Thursday, as per information provided by the State Health Department.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in the state now stands at 18,016, including 9,406 active cases.

While 8,334 patients have been discharged after treatment, 272 people have succumbed to the virus.

India's COVID-19 tally breached the 6 lakh cases mark with 19,148 new coronavirus cases being reported in the last 24 hours, informed the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Thursday.

The total cases now stand at 6,04,641 of which there are 2,26,947 active cases while 3,59,860 patients have been cured/discharged/migrated. 434 deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours taking the number of COVID-19 deaths in the country to 17,834.

Mangaluru, Jul 22: As many as 184 people from Karnataka stranded in UAE arrived at Mangalore International Airport.

According to sources, the chartered flight, which landed on Tuesday night, was arranged by the UAE Karnataka Cultural Foundation and Beary Cultural Foundation for Kannadigas who had been stranded following the lockdown and also those who had lost their employment.

A team of officials with Puttur Assistant Commissioner Yathish Ullal and Horticulture Department Assistant Director Praveen who were in charge of quarantine facilities for international passengers verified the documents and sent them for institutional quarantine.

Of the 184 passengers, 141 had remained quarantined in Mangaluru while 42 left for Udupi and one to Honnavara in Uttara Kannada, said sources.

Bengaluru, Aug 7: Karnataka Revenue Minister R Ashoka has said that state was prepared to tackle COVID-19 and flood situation.

"Today I had a meeting with officials from disaster management, housing, Police, agriculture departments. The government is ready to tackle both the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the flood situation," he told news agency.

The minister said he had held a meeting with officials to take precautionary measures.
"I sanctioned Rs 20 crore to the Fire Department to purchase the equipment for rescue operations. I have already announced red alert in six districts. Tomorrow, I will visit Kodagu, Chikmagalur to assess rescue operations. NDRF reached have teams for rescue operations," he said.

"We are monitoring all dams. Last time we got more floods because of dams. I have instructed to all district collectors that 70 per cent water be filled in dams. Remaining water be sent to canals. We are expecting more rains in nine districts this year," he added.
