Jeep catches fire; miraculous escape for occupants

Udupi, May 17: A Maruti Gypsy jeep caught fire near Kukkikatte Railway Bridge here on Wednesday. Two persons who were in the car had a providential escape.

The vehicle belonged to Chandrashekhar Sherigar. He was driving it from Kukkikatte to Indiranagar when the jeep suddenly caught fire near the railway bridge. Mr. Sherigar and Dhiraj, who also in the jeep, jumped out of it seeing the fire.

The jeep stopped near a drain. Personnel from Fire and Emergency Services rushed to the spot and put out the fire. An electric short circuit is said to be the reason for the fire. The loss has been estimated at Rs. 2.25 lakh.

Karnataka announces Rs 25 lakhs ex-gratia to kin of nodal officer who died during COVID-19 duty

Bengaluru, Aug 9: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has expressed condolences over the death of nodal officer who died while being on COVID-19 duty and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 25 lakhs to the family of the deceased.

The deceased has been identified as H Gangadharaiah. As per reports, he died due to a heart attack while on COVID-19 duty.

A government job and Rs 25 lakhs will be provided to the officer's family, according to Karnataka Chief Minister's Office (CMO).

"Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa expressed his heartfelt condolences over the death of H Gangadharaiah, KAS, who was on COVID-19 duty as nodal officer at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC)," Karnataka CMO tweeted.

"CM announced Rs 25 lakhs ex-gratia from Chief Minister's Relief Fund, a government job for a family member and instructed the last rites of Gangadharaiah to be performed with full state honours," the CMO added.

In the last 24 hours, 7,178 new COVID-19 cases (including 2665 in Bengaluru Urban), 93 deaths and 5,006 discharged cases were reported in Karnataka.

The total number of cases rises to 1,72,102 in the state, including 79,765 active cases, 89,238 discharges and 3,091 deaths, as per the State's Health Department.

Shooting and production of films, TV programmes to resume in Karnataka

Bengaluru, Jun 16: Continuing easing of restrictions under 'unlock-1,' the Karnataka government has allowed shooting and production of films and television programmes in the state.

In a clarification, Principal Secretary Revenue N Manjunath Prasad said, shooting and production of all films and television programmes that were stopped in between due to lockdown can be allowed.

It is also allowed to continue with the post-production activities of film and television programmes after completing the shooting, it said.

The permission is conditional as it is subjected to adhering of the national directives issued in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic, and standard operating procedures prescribed by the Department of Information and Public Relations.

The clarification said permission can be given as film and television shooting and production activities are not banned under guidelines issued by the centre and the state government recently.

Rs 26 lakhs worth gold seized at Mangaluru Airport, one held

Mangaluru, Feb 26: Customs officials at Mangalore International Airport on Wednesday arrested a man for trying to smuggle gold worth over Rs 26 lakh by concealing it in his rectum.

The accused has been identified as Moideen Arzan, a resident of Uppala, Kasaragod.

According to police, he arrived from Dubai by an Air India flight and was attempting to smuggle the gold which he had converted in the form of paste and concealed in rubber capsules inside his rectum.
