Mangalore, August 25: Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar Saturday said that all necessary steps would be taken to implement 24x7 drinking water supply project in Mangalore City Corporation soon following the successful implementation of the same by the civic bodies Hubli, Dharwad, Gulbarga and Belgaum.

Speaking after inaugurating the renovated Council Hall (Mangala Auditorium) of Mangalore City Corporation, CM said that more power would be given to the Commissioner and Council of City Corporation, so that decisions could be taken easily and implemented effectively for the development of the city.

S. Suresh Kumar, Minister for Housing and Urban Development, also said that steps would be taken to provide 24x7 drinking water supply to every household in the city.

Mr Shettar said that apart from the already sanctioned Rs 100 crore State Finance Commission fund for MCC, same amount would be sanctioned in second phase soon. He also promised to complete the pending work at Thumbay vented dam at the earliest to prevent water crisis in the region.

Mr Shettar said that the renovated MCC auditorium was the most excellent on in the State. The city of Mangalore is a clean and excellent one and so is the entire district of Dakshina Kannada. More work needs to be done to develop it further, he said.

Shashidhar Hegde, Corporator, appealed to the CM to implement an extensive drainage system in the city, along with implementing 24x7 drinking water supply system. Due to the lack of rains in the region, water in the Thumbay vented dam had reduced alarmingly resulting in the water crisis in the region in January. He requested the CM to see to it that the project be completed without any further delays. He also requested for an increase in the power of MCC council, as it took 6 – 12 months to get a decision sanctioned by the State Government. He also appealed to the CM to hand over property deeds to those citizens residing on government lands, and labourers be given permanent employment.

S. Suresh Kumar, Minister for Housing and Urban Development was also present.

Special Package for endosulfan victims

Later addressing a press meet, Mr Shettar said that a special package for endosulfan victims would be offered along with finding a feasible solution to the problem. Two day-care-centres for the affected have been opened in the district, and relief will be provided to those families who have not received any. The issue will be extensively discussed and solution will be sought following the example of the Government of Kerala, he said.

An appeal has been made to the Central Government to provide short term and long term relief packages for drought-hit farmers in the state. The State Government will offer them not just relief and drought tackling strategies, but loans taken by the farmers up to Rs 25,000 will be waivered off, which will result in a loss of Rs 3600 crore to the government. Assistance is also required from the Central Government in providing relief, he said.

Speaking on the rehabilitation of the displaced Malekudiyas in Kudremukh, he said that discussions would be held separately with representatives in Dakshina Kannada, Chikmagalur and Udupi districts, and a solution would be sought.

In reply to a question, Mr Shettar said that necessary steps would be taken to fill all vacant posts in National Human Rights Commission and in Lokayukta which is being discussed in the Supreme Court. In reply to another question regarding the homestay attack, he said that all those miscreants who had taken the law in their hands would be brought to books.

The foundation stone had been laid for the construction of a fountain in Kadri Park, while Rs 4 crore has been released for the construction of Ambedkar Bhavan in the City Corporation premises, he said.

Mangaluru, June 21: The first ever repatriation flight from Saudi Arabia’s Dammam Karnataka’s Mangaluru under Vande Bharat Mission (VBM) today brought home around 165 stranded passengers.

The IndiGo flight took off from Dammam International Airport at 11 a.m. (Saudi time) and landed at Mangaluru International Airport at 6:30 p.m.

The stranded passengers included pregnant women, senior citizens and those who are in need of emergency medical treatment are on board.

The passengers were screened at the Airport before being despatched for institutional quarantine in special buses.

Even though a few charter flights arranged by a couple of NRI entrepreneurs have already repatriated hundreds of stranded people from Dammam to Mangaluru, the government of India had not operated any repatriation flight under VBM on this sector so far.

Saudi Kannadigas Humanity Forum (SKHF), an NGO which came into existence to help the stranded Kannadigas in Saudi Arabia during covid-19 lockdown had been successful in persuading the government of India operate a flight on Dammam-Mangaluru sector under VBM.

SKHF has also set up an online portal for those who were in need of emergency repatriation. In today’s flight around 100 passengers have obtained seats through SKHF.

Bengaluru, June 23: A frustrated chartered accountant has committed suicide after killing his wife and mother-in-law in two different cities of India.

The murder-murder-suicide came amid acrimonious divorce proceedings that might have also involved a property dispute, police said.

Amit flew to Bengaluru last weekend to kill his estranged wife at her Whitefield residence before returning to Kolkata, where he shot dead his mother-in-law and then killed himself at an upscale residential complex in North Kolkata on Monday evening.

Amit and his wife Shilpi Agarwal, who is also a CA, had been living separately since last the two years after their marriage turned sour.

Amit took his 10-year-old son from Bengaluru with him on Monday and dropped him at his uncle’s house before heading to his in-laws’ place Phoolbagan, police said.

Neighbours told cops they heard arguments “appeared to be” over some property documents that Amit wanted his in-laws — 70-year-old Subhas and 62-year-old Lalita Dhandhania — to sign.

The first gunshot was heard a little before 6.30pm, following which Subhas ran out of his flat, bolted the door from outside and took refuge inside his next-door neighbour’s apartment. Police arrived a few minutes later to find Amit and his mother-in-law dead. Police found a suicide note from the flat.

Bengaluru, Jul 28: After the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) reduced the syllabi for Classes 9 to 12 due to COVID-19 pandemic, the Karnataka government has followed the suit. The Department of Public Instruction has omitted the chapters on legendary south Indian rulers Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan from the textbooks of Class 7 in their attempt to reduce syllabus for state board schools by 30 per cent.

The department, however, has decided to retain similar chapters on Tipu Sultan in 6th and 10th Classes, though the syllabus in text books for all classes from 1 to 10th has been trimmed.

The trimmed textbooks uploaded on the website of the Department of State Education Research and Training (DSERT) by Karnataka state Textbook Society revealed removal of chapters on Tipu Sultan for the seventh grade.

Justifying the decision, officials said, "students study similar chapters in Class 6 and more in the 10th grade." Yet another senior official from the Text Book Society said, "Trimming does not mean we have removed half of the syllabus from textbooks. It is only keeping in mind the repetition we have condensed the chapters. In case students study about a particular dynasty in higher grades, then the same had been removed from lower grades."

A few months ago, there was an uproar over dropping of content on Tipu Sultan and MLAs from the ruling BJP also demanded the same and petitioned to the Chief Minister. Even an expert committee led by Prof Baraguru Ramachandrappa suggested to not drop any content on the historic figure. However, the department still decided to drop lessons from one of the classes while keeping the syllabus short for the next 120 active academic days.

Earlier this month, a controversy had erupted over the CBSE's decision to omit topics like federalism, secularism, citizenship, etc while reducing the syllabus for Classes 9 to 12. The education board had issued a detailed clarification later, stating that topics claimed to be dropped "are either being covered by the rationalised syllabus or in the Alternative Academic Calendar of NCERT".

"The rationalisation of syllabus up to 30 per cent has been undertaken by the Board for nearly 190 subjects of class 9 to 12 for the academic session 2020-21 as a one-time measure only. The objective is to reduce the exam stress of students due to the prevailing health emergency situation and prevent learning gaps," it said.

Last week, the Congress in Uttar Pradesh expressed its concern over 'deliberate and systematic' deletions of chapters related to the freedom struggle and the party's role in it from the Class 10-12 syllabi of the Secondary Education Board.
