8 men kill Samajwadi Party leader in his Greater Noida home

Samajwadi_PartyGreater Noida, Apr 25: Around eight armed men entered the Greater Noida home of a Samajwadi Party national executive member and shot him dead on Wednesday, a day when the politician's two security guards were on leave.

The victim, Chaman Bhati, was walking in his garden in Dabra village around 6pm when the attackers, who came in a Scorpio, scaled the wall and shot him five times, police said.

The property businessman-turned-politician died on the spot.

"The assailants came in a Scorpio car, scaled the residence walls and opened fire on him. They managed to flee with Bhati and his gunner's carbine and licenced pistols," said a senior police official. Tension erupted after the incident as angry locals did not allow the police to take his body for post mortem examination till late on Wednesday

IG (Meerut range) Bhavesh Kumar Singh said that police have lodged an FIR. "Gautambudh Nagar SSP has been deployed at the scene and case is being investigated," Singh said.

On hearing shots being fired, Bhati's family members and locals reached the scene and found him in a pool of blood. When Gautam Budh Nagar SP (rural) reached the spot, agitated locals demanded the immediate arrested of the culprits.

Police sources said several attempts were made on Bhati's life in the last 10 years. Family sources said 10 months ago, unidentified assailants had attacked him. "The criminals had then come to kill him but by mistake opened fire on his brother-in-law, Pankaj," an official said. In view of danger to his life,Bhati had been provided with two gunners. Both were on leave on Wednesday.

New Delhi, Aug 2: The Centre has written to all states and Union Territories stating that smartphones and tablet devices should be allowed for hospitalised Covid-19 patients so that they can interact with family and friends through video conferencing, which would provide them psychological support.

Though mobile phones are allowed in hospital wards, the missive was issued following some representation from the kin of patients alleging otherwise.

Director-General of Health Services (DGHS) in the Health Ministry Dr Rajiv Garg in the letter to the principal secretaries of health and medical education of states and Union territories said appropriate protocols for disinfecting devices and allotting timeslots can be developed by the hospital concerned to facilitate contact between patients and their family.

He underlined that administrative and medical teams should be responsive to the psychological needs of patients admitted in Covid-19 wards and ICUs of various hospitals.

"Social connection can calm down patients and also reinforce the psychological support given by the treating team. Please instruct all concerned that they should allow smartphones and tablet devices in patient areas so that the patient can video conference with their family and friends," stated the letter issued on July 29.

"Though mobile phones are allowed in the wards to enable a patient stay in touch with his or her family, we received representations from the patient families from some states stating mobile phones are not being allowed by hospital administrations because of which they were not being able to stay in contact with the patient," said Dr Garg.

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 5: Eight more COVID-19 positive cases were reported from Kerala on Sunday, four among whom attended the Tablighi Jamat congregation in Delhi and six people were cured, Health Minister K K Shailaja said.

With this, the total number of affected people under treatment in the state has gone up to 256, she said.

"Out of the eight cases, five are from Kozhikode, and one each from Pathanamthitta, Kannur and Kasaragod districts.

In the case of Kozhikode, four out of the five returned from Nizammuddin meet and one from Dubai.

As of date, 10 people who had returned from Nizammuddin in Delhi have been tested positive," the minister said in a release

A total of 314 cases have been reported from Kerala so far and 56 people have been cured, she said

"We have sent 10,221 samples for testing," she said.

A total of 1.58 lakh people are under observation in the state, out of which 776 are in isolation wards in hospitals.

India's COVID-19 tally raced past the seven lakh-mark with 22,252 fresh infections on Tuesday, five days after crossing the six lakh post, while the death toll climbed to 20,160 as 467 more people succumbed to the disease, according to the Union health ministry.

With this, the country has recorded over 20,000 cases of the infection for the fifth consecutive day.

India's coronavirus infection caseload stands at 7,19,665, the ministry's data updated at 8 am showed.

With a steady rise, the number of recoveries stands at 4,39,947, while there are 2,59,557 active cases of coronavirus infection in the country.

"Thus, around 61.13 % of patients have recovered so far," an official said.

The total number of confirmed cases also includes foreigners.

Of the 467 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, 204 are from Maharashtra, 61 from Tamil Nadu, 48 from Delhi, 29 from Karnataka, 24 from Uttar Pradesh, 22 from West Bengal, 17 from Gujarat.

Telangana and Haryana reported 11 deaths each; Madhya Pradesh nine; Andhra Pradesh seven; Jammu and Kashmir six; Rajasthan and Punjab five each; Bihar, Kerala and Odisha two each; and Arunachal Pradesh and Jharkhand one each.
