Hemant Soren to stake claim to form government in Jharkhand

Ranchi, Jul 9: Armed with the support of 42 MLAs in the 82-member Jharkhand Assembly, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) Legislature Party leader Hemant Soren would formally stake claim to form government on Tuesday.

soren“The JMM leader sought time between 5 pm and 6 pm to stake claim for a new government formation, and Governor Syed Ahmed gave him time at 5.30 pm,” said an official attached to Raj Bhavan.

The development comes nine days before the six-month period of President’s rule ends.

On Monday, JMM general secretary Vinod Pandey had said the party would likely stake claim to form the ninth coalition government on Tuesday with the required majority.

Marxist Coordination Committee MLA Arup Chatterjee, Jharkhand Janadhikar Manch MLA Bandhu Tirkey and three independent MLAs —— Bidesh Singh, Chamra Linda and Harinarain Rai have already extended support to the new Hemant Soren-led JMM/Congress/RJD alliance.

Geeta Koda, another independent MLA and wife of former chief minister Madhu Koda, on Tuesday extended her support.

Jharkhand Party MLA Enos Ekka said his party has set a 15-point charter and his support to the alliance depends on a written assurance that the demands would be fulfilled by the future government.

Mr. Soren has the support of 42 MLAs now and if Ekka lends support, the figure of the new alliance will jump to 44 in the 82-member House.

The President’s rule was imposed on January 18 after the JMM pulled out from the BJP-led government on January 8.

The House is currently in suspended animation.

New Delhi, Apr 18: With 957 new cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours and 36 deaths, India's total count of coronavirus cases has surged to 14,792, said the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Saturday.

The total cases are inclusive of 2,014 cured and discharged patients, one migrated and 488 deaths. At present, there are 12,289 active COVID-19 cases in the country.

Lav Aggarwal, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said that mortality rate due to COVID-19 in our country is around 3.3 per cent.

"An age-wise analysis will tell you that 14.4 per cent of deaths have been reported in the age group of 0-45 years. Between 45-60 years it is 10.3 percent, between 60-75 years it is 33.1 percent and for 75 years, and above it is 42.2 percent," Aggarwal said at a press conference here.

New Delhi, May 10: A medium-intensity earthquake of 3.4 magnitude hit Delhi on Sunday.

According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the quake occurred at 1.45pm at a depth of five kilometres.

There were no immediate reports of loss of life or property.

New Delhi, Aug 2: The Centre has written to all states and Union Territories stating that smartphones and tablet devices should be allowed for hospitalised Covid-19 patients so that they can interact with family and friends through video conferencing, which would provide them psychological support.

Though mobile phones are allowed in hospital wards, the missive was issued following some representation from the kin of patients alleging otherwise.

Director-General of Health Services (DGHS) in the Health Ministry Dr Rajiv Garg in the letter to the principal secretaries of health and medical education of states and Union territories said appropriate protocols for disinfecting devices and allotting timeslots can be developed by the hospital concerned to facilitate contact between patients and their family.

He underlined that administrative and medical teams should be responsive to the psychological needs of patients admitted in Covid-19 wards and ICUs of various hospitals.

"Social connection can calm down patients and also reinforce the psychological support given by the treating team. Please instruct all concerned that they should allow smartphones and tablet devices in patient areas so that the patient can video conference with their family and friends," stated the letter issued on July 29.

"Though mobile phones are allowed in the wards to enable a patient stay in touch with his or her family, we received representations from the patient families from some states stating mobile phones are not being allowed by hospital administrations because of which they were not being able to stay in contact with the patient," said Dr Garg.
