Moga, May 1: A day after a minor girl died after being allegedly molested and thrown off a running bus belonging to the ruling Badal family in Punjab, the police on Thursday arrested four persons, including the bus driver, conductor and helper. The victim’s mother also suffered injuries after she was reportedly thrown off the bus too.

Political stormAccording to reports, the incident took place near Gill village on Moga-Kotkapura road, late on Wednesday. The bus belongs to Orbit Company, owned by Orbit Aviation Pvt Ltd, of which Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal is a co-owner.

While Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal admitted that the bus belonged to a company owned by his family, but said he personally “never took interest” in its affairs, Punjab DGP Sumedh Singh Saini ruled out any questioning of the owners of Orbit Aviation Pvt Ltd, including Sukhbir Badal.

Describing the incident as “very unfortunate and sad”, the CM said, “Law will take its course. A case of murder has been registered and other sections have been added on the basis of the statement made by the injured woman.”

The victim, Arshdeep Kaur, 13, was travelling with her mother Shinder Kaur, 35, and brother, Akashdeep Singh, 15, from Moga to Bathinda when she was allegedly molested.

Speaking to The Indian Express at the Civil Hospital in Moga, Akashdeep said: “My mother and sister were sitting in the rear seats. At first, the bus conductor and his helper started misbehaving with my sister. They touched her and passed comments. Later, a third man who boarded the bus at Baghapurana toll plaza also joined them.”

Akashdeep said his mother called for help, but none of the passengers responded. “I tried to help them but one of the men caught hold of me… There were about eight or 10 passengers, including some women. Nobody helped us. When my sister and mother continued to resist, they pushed my mother out of the rear door, and then immediately pushed my sister out also,” he said.

When he saw his mother and sister being pushed out, Akashdeep said he jumped out of the bus too. He saw his sister lying unconscious on the road. “I borrowed a phone from a person passing by and called up my father,” he said, adding that both his sister and mother had suffered head injuries. They were rushed to the Moga Civil Hospital, where the girl was declared dead.

“They were touching my daughter on her chest, on her hands… She was crying for help. I tried to help and asked the driver to stop them. Nobody listened. There were other passengers, but nobody helped. As I tried to stop them, they made obscene gestures and laughed. My daughter was being harassed continuously… they then threw us out of the bus,” said Shinder Kaur.

Her husband, Sukhdev Singh, a labourer, said he would not allow a post-mortem till the police arrested all the accused and named the driver in the FIR.

“The bus belongs to the Badals… We demand action against the bus driver. We will not perform the last rites till the driver is booked,” said the victim’s grandmother, Surjit Kaur.

According to the FIR, however, Shinder Kaur said in her statement that the scuffle with the conductor started over tickets. The bus driver, Ranjit Singh, conductor Sukhwinder Singh, helper Gurdeep Singh, and the fourth accused Amarjeet Singh have been arrested. The last three have been charged under Sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 354 (molestation) of IPC.

“We have arrested the driver as investigations revealed that he did not stop the bus when the incident occurred,” said Moga SSP J S Khaira.

New Delhi, June 8: Only 20.26 lakh migrant workers of the targeted 8 crore such labourers have received free food grains in May and June (2020), according to data released by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.

In the middle of May, as part of the Rs 20 lakh crore Atma Nirbhar Bharat package, the Modi government had announced that migrant labourers who are not covered under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) or any state-run PDS scheme, will receive free food grains for two months.

"Non-card holders shall be given 5 kg wheat or rice per person and 1 kg chana per family per month for the next 2 months. About 8 crore migrants will benefit from this scheme that will cost the government Rs 3500 crore,” Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had said at a press conference following PM Modi’s announcement.

But the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said on Sunday, "The states and UTs have lifted 4.42 LMT (lakh metric tonne) of food grains and distributed 10,131 MT of it to 20.26 lakh beneficiaries."

It added, "The Government of India also approved 39,000 MT pulses for 1.96 crore migrant families. Around 28,306 MT gram/dal have been dispatched to the states and UTs. A total 15,413 MT gram have been lifted by various states and UTs". The state governments, the ministry added, had distributed only 631MT (metric tonnes) of gram so far.

Because of the constant movement of migrant workers, the Centre had said that the states will be responsible for identifying the migrants and subsequent food distribution.

The Centre claims it is spending approximately Rs 3,109 crore for food grains and Rs 280 crores for grams/chana under this package.

Panaji, Jan 28: Bureaucrat-turned-activist Kannan Gopinathan on Tuesday said even some "RSS people" are convinced the Citizenship Amendment Act is a bad law but are keeping quiet as the NDA government at the Centre is their own baby.

Speaking in Panaji, he further said the Narendra Modi government was behaving like a "drunken teenager" which needs to be questioned or else it will end up destroying homes.

"I was detained twice in UP, kept the whole day, because they (government) do not want the questioning (of CAA). I have met so many RSS people, they also understand this...if you have this conversation, they also understand the government has done something (wrong) and they have been asked to support it," he claimed.

He said the line of thought among these RSS people (he met) was "just support it (CAA)" as they don't want an altercation because the "government is their baby".

"He (government) is not a normal baby, he is a drunken teenager. He should be asked questions because when he starts destroying, he does not destroy somebody else's home but your own home," Gopinathan said.

He also hit out at those who have been claiming that the people protesting against the CAA are unaware about the law and have not even read it.

Gopinathan claimed if one had asked supportive MPs about the CAA on the day it was passed in Parliament, several of them would not have been able to speak on it as "they would not have known what was passed, because they were not given time (to go through the bill)".

He said, earlier, such legislation was passed after several rounds of consultation but "now, by night, it becomes an Act", adding (now) "everything is a surgical strike".

Gopinathan, in a possible reference to the National Register of Citizens exercise carried out in Assam, also claimed "thousands of people are in detention centres".

"It is your fundamental right to peacefully assemble without arms, Article 19 (1) (D) (of the Constitution)," he said at a function organised by a group opposed to CAA.

Gopinathan said people "always felt they were in a democracy" because they never tried to fly, when in reality "you are in a cage".

"The moment you want to fly you realise you are in a cage," he said, adding that "we have to question, we have to ask ourselves where are we going".

"When you don't allow a person to speak against an incorrect legislation, then what is democracy? What is freedom of expression?" Gopinathan questioned.

Gopinathan, a 2012 batch AGMUT cadre Indian Administrative Service officer, was the secretary, Power Department of the Union Territories of Daman and Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli when he resigned on August 21 last year.

At the time, he had claimed the people of Jammu and Kashmir were being denied freedom of expression following abrogation of Article 370 by the Centre.

Ahmedabad, May 12: The Gujarat High Court on Tuesday declared state BJP minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama's election in 2017 as void on grounds of malpractice and manipulation.

Justice Paresh Upadhyay cancelled Bhupendrasinh Chudasama's election in an order passed on a petition filed by Congress candidate Ashwin Rathod, challenging the BJP leader's victory from Dholka constituency by a margin of 327 votes in the 2017 Gujarat Assembly polls.

In his election petition, Ashwin Rathod alleged that Bhupendrasinh Chudasama indulged in "corrupt practice and breach of many of the mandatory instructions of the Election Commission, at various stages of the election process, more particularly at the time of counting of votes".

Bhupendrasinh Chudasama currently holds charge of the education, law and justice, legislative and parliamentary affairs, and some other departments in the Vijay Rupani government.
